I was going to say "Why Round 2", then I read that oil drilling was involved. Morbid LOL.

I think it's probable that the British will still hold a legitimate claim, but I wouldn't rule out a war, not even a war with 3rd party backers.

The primary reason isn't even oil.
Just like last time it is a political move to distract the people from domestic issues.

There won't be a war. It could only turn out horribly for Argentina.
If there were, it will be a field day for the British.

It wont be a field day for the Brits. In PR terms it's an unwinable position. If we win were perceived as bullies. If we dont trounce them totally were perceived as weak. Every tinpot dictator will scream colonialism without a thought for the irony that it is the Argentinians who are being colonial in this situation while the Brits defend the self-determination of a tiny island. Then when the oil cheques come in they go to the islands and the Brits have to go cap in hand asking for a cut to cover the costs.

There is no field day on the cards for the Brits.

Damned if you do... damned if you don't... this is one of the main areas where being a politician SUCKS. If you wage war, liberals get agitated; if you don't, conservatives get agitated. If there was but a simple way to get a peaceful outcome that didn't result in Britain giving an inch... then I think both sides would be happy.

I do hope there's a war, however. If only so the USA finally gets a chance to shut the Venezuelan jackass up. He wants colonialism, we'll give him colonialism!

Granted, we don't have many soldiers or overall resources available thanks to Junior, buuuut, this is what the CIA is for. Provided an actual, transparent election followed Chavez's removal, it would probably wouldn't be as controversial as say, installing a local puppet and thus paving the way for Venezuela to become the new Iran rather than the next Cuba.

Yeah you guys did so well with castro...

How about you let the real security services with forged dossiers handle it eh?

Why would you remove Chavez and then have fair elections? Don't the people want him in the first place?

If you're referring to the Bay of Pigs, there are a lot of reasons that failed. Past failures are good, however; they give you something to study to improve your chances of future successes.

Who would those be? :p

This is where "accidents" are important. ;)

He falls from his balcony during a speech... a day of national mourning... new guy elected, lather, rinse and repeat. :mischief:

Whether I'm being serious or not, is anyone's guess.

I'm referring to the constant novelty failures over the years, wasn't the fail count at 43 or something. Including a cigar that was supposed to blow up...

Why does the US think it has the right to decide what's good for other people?

Maybe Castro is like Hitler and just won't die, regardless of how much crap you throw at him?

If no one else can take him out, the solution is simple... drive him to suicide! Even the coldest person has a little bit of warmth somewhere inside them... all you need to do is locate that warmth and tear into it.

Why does the US think it has the right to decide what's good for other people?

The same reason any other great power does: might makes right. China plays nice now, but I bet that'll change when they stop relying so much on the international community for growth...

Personally, I don't mind "imperialism" provided the intentions behind it are generally good: fostering social, economic, and political progress. Democratic Peace Theory and all that.

I do. Self-determination, freedom, etc. means that you don't have a right to tell other people what to do.

Speculation is pointless.

The Falklands are British. And will remain so. End of debate.

:)

This is a thread on who should, not who does possess the islands. Also, there's still some sort of negotiation, actually there would be if both sides had responsible rulers which deserved any respect. Especially on the plaintiff's (Argentina's) side.

Do you truly think any amount of negotiation is going to lead to the UK
handing over our island and people to those crooks running Argentina?

PS
Given the cowardice and weakness of UK's Labour party, it is possible...
Though, this crisis is about all that lovely oil, so Brown has to keep face...

PPS
But I expect the USA to betray Britain on this one though...We back them in
the slaughter-fest in Arabia, but they won't lift a finger for us...Some alliance!

;)

Get me into power in the USA and I give you my word you need never question our support. Hell, I'd help you get India back!

Crooks? Why do you call someone who's assets have multiplied while in office at the same time when poverty rates rise constantly and infrastructure goes unrepaired crooks? They're outright robbers, those sods.

Both sides are in it for face, mostly. If it weren't that way, they could just arrange for a split in the profits.

Pffft. That was our fault.
