Why assume God is good?

Great question. Unfortunately no way to make any meaningful headway with the question until the question "What is 'Good'?" is answered.
Good (pun not intended) question.

I myself believe that good is a point of view. It is relative, much like time. Good is whatever a person chooses to define good.

So, God is both good, evil, neither, and both simultaneously, as it is a fair assumption that there exist people who believe that he is good, that he is evil, that he is neither good nor evil, or that he is both good and evil.

Every major religion these days assumes God is good. What up with that?

Faith

Go ahead, attack me for it. Prove me wrong. Logic can prove anything wrong.

That's why in the long run what you believe is the only thing that matters.

Yeah, but the "main" god in hinduism is good...
Actually hinduism is henotheistic mostly. But i doubt the majority worship Vishnu. Maybe we should wait till aaneshm gets here.

Anyway, the 3 gods of the holy trinity in hinduism are: creator - order - chaos.

Assuming if God is the one omnipotent supreme being, the creater of the universe, how can it be bad or good? It simply exists.

Hinduism is Monotheistic. Those who "invented" the religion wanted it to be as complicated as possible.
If you would have known what henotheistic means you wouldn't have posted that.

Bozo is closest to being on the right track, in noting that everyone is "right" in their own minds, about God, about goodness, and everything else.

If you believe in a dual nature of the universe (good and evil, life and death, love and hate, etc.) then God is merely the name that we associate with the power of the all of the things that we like: goodness, mercy, life, peace, love, etc.

If you believe in a monist nature of the universe (everything is one thing), then God is assumed to be good because we know no different; i.e. God could be "evil", but then everything would be evil, and we would know no different, so we would call it "good" anyway.

If you don't believe in God, it doesn't matter what you think of the concept.

Why ain't God evil?

And remember, the Bible/Koran/Talmud could be lies from God's evil little mouth!

Damn i should of thought of this topic.

Very good point perf.

Fantasy settings in books sometimes have evil gods. So it could be possible.

And wasnt ahriman an evil god according to zoroastriasm?

Faith is illogical.
Let me ask you somethin:If you are an astronaut and just about to embark on a rocket ship to be blasted into space, would you consider that it takes faith of your engineers to do the job right instead of courage that the rocket ship would not fall apart?;)

Faith on a real thing is not the same as faith on an unproven idea such as god existing.

And besides you dont need to have faith in them for them to do thier job well. If you have faith in them but dont tell them why would that matter anyway?

How do you know the unproven idea isn't a real thing?

How do i know if santa clause isnt a real thing?

How do i know if the easter bunny isnt a real thing?

How do i know pluto isnt made of cheese?

How do i know if the flying spaghetti monster isnt a real thing?

how do you know if math is a real thing?

how do you know if your hand is a real thing?

how do you know you aren't on The Truman Show?

how do you know your senses aren't lying to you?

We can observe those.

So far we cant observe wether santa clause or the easter bunny exists somewhere in hiding on earth.

We cant observe what pluto is made of because no man made object has gotten close enough to take a detailed picture.

We cant know if the flying spaghetti monster is real.
