Why smokers do smoke??
I would preferably have someone that smokes explain their reasoning for doing it but anyone else can give me a reason too.I am mysitified to why people do it so this is what this thread is for.

I only smoke weed. That is because it is quite enjoyable thing to do with company, like drinking alcohol.

I drink mostly as a social thingy. And I don't drink too much. I prefer wine over beer though, and mojitos over rum and cola, although I enjoy Captain Morgan :). During meals I enjoy my glass of wine, better with company than alone, but it is just a glass or two, because meals taste better with wine, and it doesn't get me drunk.

On topic now, I only smoke cigars also in special occasions, I like the aroma of cigars, but I found cigarettes pointless.

Oh... I changed my avatar. :D

I started smoking when I was 15 because I was bored and stupid. I continued to smoke for 5 years and then gave up because I wheezed every morning and was broke from the cost of cigarettes.

Then I started smoking (fulltime) again about 2 months ago after being off the cigs for 8 years. Why smoke? It feels nice, particularly when you're having a cup of coffee in the afternoon or a pint after work. But the main reason for smoking is that I am addicted. If I don't smoke I feel an inexplicable desire to smoke.

I gave up again three days ago and I swear the attachment to cigarettes is almost emotional. It's such a sad thing to admit but I feel like my best friend has left town forever. Even though the cigs make me feel like crap and I really only enjoy maybe 2 of the 20 or 30 cigs a day that I smoke. They really are the most fiendishly addictive things ever invented.

Nice avatar Urederra .

Is this thread about cigarettes or weed/hash ?

anyhow I smoke both ... I smoke cigarettes cuz im hooked and I smoke weed to have fun ... I don't drink so I smoke

Believe it or not, I actually really enjoy the taste of my Camels. Marlboros suck so much that I'd rather smoke rolled-up doggie poo than a Marlboro, but I really like my Camels.

Also, according to a long ago article in Modern Maturity magazine, there are NINE positive physical side-effects to smoking. Sure, they might be a few negative side-effects as well, but hey...

Marlboros ARE rolled up poo.

Camels don't bother me ... but once in a while I buy a pack of Gitanes, Those cigarettes are black tobacco and one of the most aggressive cigarettes I ever smoked.

As for good side effects : Cigarettes are supposed to ameliorate your eyesight for the first 5 minutes after you smoked.

This is a very interesting question. I'm with Marshy, it's not only chemistry.

I have this wild theory that it has something to do with recapitulation theory. In a nutshell it's that there is a correspondence between the stages in development of an individual and previous evolutionary states of the species.

OK that sounds like BS and it is widely believed to be BS these days, but it was important to people like Freud.

Maybe the act of exhaling reminds us of a time when our ancestors were aquatic. The mating act would have required ejaculation of eggs and sperm into the water. Maybe there is a sex/genetic memory/smoking link?

Actually, its a pretty easy question.

Overwhelmingly, people start to smoke due to peer pressure or poor parental modeling. They then continue to smoke due to addication or simply because they enjoy it and are willing to take the opportunity cost of lower life expectancy.

Done.

My mother smoked so monkey see monkey do. Then I found one that tasted good (Camel Lights) and by that time I was hooked but not so much that quiting after 15 years was as easy as just not lighting one up.

I disagree ... none of the above fits me :)

I learned as a teenager that too much alcohol makes me violent. Due to this I don’t drink except for toasts at certain dinners. In other words, a couple sips a year.

I have never liked the smell of cigarettes so have never tried them, nor do I have the desire to ever try them.

I have smoked weed before (a lot) and see nothing wrong with doing it. I used to smoke it every night about an hour before I went to bed and slept great! I never smoked weed if I planned on leaving the house.

I haven’t smoked weed in over five years due to being married. Whereas I see no problem with it, that doesn’t change the fact that it is illegal. And since any legal action against me would affect my wife I therefore have chosen to never smoke weed again so long as it’s illegal.

Well, "overwhelming", would still allow for exceptions. :) Most statistical analysis supports what I said though.

That said, why did you start then?

not by peer pressure.
I started smoking at 18 ... I was in a cooking course and I did not know anybody ... so I asked a few guys for cigarettes and told them I would give it back to them the next day, so I bought a pack and started from there.

For weed ... its becaus I was young and my brother and sister smoked it I decided to try it. I liked it so I did not stop. Also that in parties I did not drink so I wanted something to give me a buzz :crazyeye:
