I am a smoker, it is because,
-stress
-it is easy to socialise, I project good image most of the time, and the only time that I am able to socialise with my "not so good" friends is through smoking.
-it's easy to kill time by smoking as well
-I don't look forward for a long life
-Just to protect my personal space, non-smokers will clear the space around me most of the time when I pop out my cigarettes

The only reason I quit is a very preaty girl asked me to. But now that I have I feel better smell better have better skin and more money for other stuff.

I started smoking long ago when I started drinking. I smoked weed first. I liked playing with the smoke when I was younger. I have come to like having smoke around, thus like smoking. I know it is bad for me and those around me and I try to take their lungs into consideration. I am trying to cut back so I can quit but I am slow in doing it because I like it. The only immediate drawback is the smell. If cigarettes didn't stink, I would probably have a harder time quiting - besides the physical addiction. If it was easy to quit though, I would do it tomorrow. But a non-smoker saying quitting is easy - just stop does not know the extremity of it.

Not only is there a substance addiction involved but a daily/hourly havit involved similar to knuckle cracking or nail biting. It is the act of smoking itself, that gives you something to do with your hands. Alot of smokers have a hard time not smoking like a train when they are bored. I can go without a cigareete for a long time if I am kept busy but as soon as I am not under pressure, here comes that need for a cigarette.

I have the same need to occupy my hands and my mouth. In my case, I just play around with my fingers in a sort of fake sign language, and play around with my tongue. But then I am weird like that.

I eat more it satifies the hand and mouth. I gained 30 pounds in 2 months.

Both of my parents smoke like steam engines, and yet my brother and I don`t. I don`t mind the smell of cigarettes, I sometimes even enjoy it. I tried one cigarette in my life, and came to a conclusion that it wasn`t anything special (same example with weed), and that smoking would mean less money for beer :crazyeye::goodjob:

BTW, my parents said it was OK if I smoked when I was 13 or so, just not to hide it from them (my mom told me hillarious stories how she did), maybe thats why I didn`t find it interesting?

I enjoy it, I even enjoyed the first I ever smoked.

The poll options are terrible by the way.
I do hope you do quit soon since smoking is a nasty and unhealthy habit. :(

It's unhealthy, it's not nasty in my opinion. And I don't think I will quit soon.

But thanks anyway ;)

Some people are genetically so that they are very likely to become addicted. What their addiction is doensn't really matter - but they are almost certain to get addicted to something (or several things).
I think I have that gene. I have been addicted to several things - smoking, internet, TV, fisherman's friends, alcohol, chocolate, plastic spoon chewing, chewing gum, antaflu etc. I have to be careful to not start testing highly addictive and dangerous stuff like cocaine, gambling, XTC.
I don't want to use this as something I can hide behind nor as an excuse, but in my case it surely played a part on why I smoked. I stopped a couple of months ago.

I am glad I never ever even tried smoking. During my uni time, I learned what makes smoking so addictive. In very short words: your pleasure system gets ****ed up by the nicotine, thus you are unable to produce sufficient endorphines unless nicotine is present. No wonder people feel (quote from this thread) that 'my best friend has left town' if they stop smoking. They feel depressed!

never smoked in my life. It wasn't hard for me, since my parents don't smoke (dad quit when I was still a kid), and for some reason most of my friends don't smoke either.
But I never felt the urge to smoke, even if in "smoking" company.

One thing I never understood, is people starting to smoke because of stress. I can understand that someone who's quit starts again when under stress. But someone who never smoked? I mean, does he say to himself : "damn this stress is getting too much, I need a cigar now?"

That is hard for me to understand, too, but I have come up with a theory:

Advertising!

People who smoke in ads are always cool, relaxed, in control. You want to be cool, relaxed, in control?
Smoke!

it is a subtle, but very effective message. You find it in most ads, not only cig ads. But since it is very hard to become hooked on cars, dishwashers or a certain brand of shampoo you notice the effect most with cigs.

I started because I was curious.

Well I smoked my first when I was 16 at a school party, after that bought my first pack of cigarettes, couple week laters told my parents, and before you know it you are smoking everyday and dont function very well before a smoke and a cup of coffee in the morning.

Then you realize you actually have to stop, but you keep postponing that moment. That is where I'm at now :D

Im gonna stop soon tho, yes I really am gonna stop soon. Ill tell you that! But the nicotine got a hold on me! ;)

No advertising here in the UK. And for years they were not allowed to show cigs or smoking, leading to really odd adverts - a gecko on sand, a piece of silk etc etc

I started to smoke aroud 17, though it was only at parties and such. I'm now 27 and regular. Its more of a very bad habit than anything. I've got a few seconds spare, i will light one, after dinner, a lunch break, whenever i can at my work place while getting a coffee, ect ect.

Nearly a reflex.

I never smoked also, and I didnt feel the pressure either, I simply never gone to places where ppl only smoke and drink or get along with ppl that did/do.

My dad also quit when I was a teenager, but was to late, he died four months ago with lung cancer...I warned him so many times :(

Some try by curiosity, others because its cool, others to achieve status...and many other reasons, besides all that dont smoke! its bad for you and for others that care about you.
