I went through a brief phase in high school where I would have started smoking given the opportunity. Luckily for me, I was too unpopular to get any of the peer pressure that I desired so much. And I knew at the time that if I did, I would end up regretting it anyways.

I actually like the smell of pipe tobacco and would consider to start smoking one, was it not for the health issues.

Ever see the movie "Little Big Man"? I think I'm a contrary. Peer pressure always had the opposite effect on me.

Much my opinion, too.

I am a non smoker, but that is due to luck rather than anything else.

The bunch of school mates I was with took up smoking. I was pressured
into starting. I knew damm well that it was unhealthy. However the
innate human programming and social conditioning to fit in, is very strong.
So I started inhaling. However I went into a coughing fit. The school
mates started laughing and were very rude. I became quite annoyed,
that they had been so rude to me when I had been trying to fit in.

So I stopped trying. I became persona non gratae with them.

Now if they had been more polite, I would probably have persevered
with smoking and become a nicotine addict like they did.

Interestingly, by my senior year of high school, and certainly since then, peer pressure as had the opposite effect and there is no better way to get me to not do something than trying to pressure me into doing it. But this was part of a weird phase where I was trying to be normal, before realizing that I was much better off being my bizarre and unique self.

I believe that they are:
1. Stuck in the oral stage and need an oral fixation
2. Addicted to nicotine
3. they were pressured into it by peer pressure

Point #1 is the hardest to get over. Its the habbit part of hand to mouth that irks me now. The addiction was gone in a few days.

I started smoking tobacco (roll ups at first, then I moved onto proper cigs when I had a bit more money) after smoking pot for a few months when I was around 16, but that only lasted for about 3 weeks before stopping. The tobacco in joints didn't feel like it was doing much at first, until the nicotine started to get to me.

After about a year and a half of not smoking I started again when I went to uni after having a few too many drinks in Fresher's Week. The combination of alcohol and nicotine just feels so good:sad: . Whilst hating waking up with a dry mouth and feeling the effects on my lungs, about 4 or so cigs a day were really nice, even if that was the addiction giving me that feeling.

I haven't given up smoking pot yet, but I do it much less now than I used to. I stopped smoking cigarettes about a week ago, once my exams were over, and I got used to being back home, and I knew I'd be able to go a long period of time without drinking alcohol. I was only on about 15 a day though, and didn't have any problems with withdrawal symptoms, but I am still having thoughts about how nice it'd be to just light up one more Lucky Strike about once or twice a day:sad:

This is the third time I've tried to stop, and unlike the others I do have a different feeling about this, as I can actually see myself as a non-smoker in 5 years, unlike before.:D

I truly can't stand cigarettes, they taste disgusting to me. But I succumbed to peer pressure when I was around 15. Never again :p I did discover that roll-up cigarettes are fairly relaxing though, but I made sure I was never taught how to roll.

Cigars and pipes though, I love them. Luckily I don't have a pipe at the moment, and cigars are relatively expensive, so it's a fairly rare treat.

Starting: In Finland smoking indoors is a big no-no.
I got fed up with my friens always going out for a cig and me not.
And I was 21 at the time. The pressure from the friends was more not to start though.
Stopping: I've stopped a couple of times, once for 8 years.
The physical side was nothing but the psychological graving never left me.
Now: I've smoked again for about 18 months again. Restarting was stress related.
At work it's like part of the routine and also a great way to take a small break to calm down when you've cleaned the s**t from the fan for the third time.

edit: forgot to say that I've always loved the smell of cigarettes even before I'd ever smoked myself.

I do not know.

Probably to get a buzz.

Why do smokers smoke ?
Because they are weak.

Also, there's this short guy in my class that had a squeaky voice and started smoking heavily so that his voice would lose the girly voice. His voice changed but i shove it in his face every once-in-a-while.

I was neither pressured into it nor am I classically addicted, in fact most of my friends told me I was an idiot, and most don't smoke now.

I started when I was 18. I tend to smoke with a drink, so I smoke between 20 and 40 per week, depending on which week of the year it is.

I presume your referring to peer pressure, peer pressure it appears made me do the opposite, smoke when I was and am constantly under pressure not to:)

I agree to some extent though, most people aren't like me and will cave in to be in the in crowd.

Gave up dope when I was 18 to sit exams and discovered the backy barons had me. Never went back to dope - except maby twice a year at a party where I cannt be bothered to refuse - but the evil weed has me in its grasp.

As other posters have mentioned there are only say four cigs a day that are pleasurable, and a couple of times I have cut back to that and actually enjoyed the whole gig. The only other remotely good part of it is the micro-break from work, often when you need to think a problem all the way through - three mins pondering a problem calmly almost always shows you the way forward.

Yup, those that give in are those that are to un-cool and think that by smoking they would look cooler. It's the answer to ppl with lack of creativity.

Most of my friends are 1pack/day smokers ...
they ask me quite often : "Do you want one ?"
I say "Nope"
They say "why not ?"
I say "What reason would i have ?"
Here is where it usually ends. But on several ocasions it continued.
Once it continued with:
they say "aren't you depressed and all that ... this will make you feel better"
i say "but that would ease the pain"
they say:
i said "if you want to help me then get a knife"
they say: umm ... yea, so what else is going on ?

I've only smoked 5 cigarettes in my entire life - and each one of those times I was drunk and a hot/cute girl convinced me to do it for one reason or another.

I've smoked much more tabacco than that though - one of my ex-roommates used to mix it in with mj when he rolled..
