Mine is that tourism is replaced / significantly reworked. I like additional victory options but in game design terms I don't think it is a fun or elegant mechanic and, for me personally, it always feels underwhelming to win that way on an immersion level.
A runner up would be that Britain makes the cut of civs in the base game. Would be kind of ironic if they get bumped to a DLC now, given that naval warfare is apparently finally meaningful!
I remember that the devs mentioned late game improvement as one of the reasons to introduce ages at all. Therefore I hope that they went all out on creative mechanics for the last of the ages.
Other than that I hope that the modern age doesn't leave space for a fourth age, mainly because it would mean we'll need more DLCs to have a satisfying amount of civs per age...
There's a good amount of evidence that there will be some in-depth mechanics tied to resources, from references to units requiring them in Modern to UI implying manufacturing of them and even the apparent importance of factories (getting them cheaper is a whole Town specialization.) My one hope is that there's a major mechanic that ISN'T that to go along with it, similar to how there's an Economic mechanic and a Cultural mechanic in Exploration (Treasure Fleets and Religion.) Ideology seems a popular idea, but I'd also be interested in how an Archeology or Tourism system would interact with the whole "history built in layers" mechanic. The idea of cultural dominance as a win condition is so fascinating to me, and I think the Civ game focused on the development of cultures throughout history should play around with it a bit more. How would archeology interact with Overbuilding? Would unique Quarters and Tile Improvements drive additional tourism? Then again, the game is designed for the Ages to work as individual games, so mechanics tied to the fact that you've played multiple Ages might not work...
I'm betting archaeology is in. Beach added it to Civ5 in BNW, and he launched Civ6 with it. It seems to be a thing he really likes. (I like it, too, in theory, but I wouldn't mind seeing it streamlined a little.)
I bet that Modern Age Cultural Victory will revolve around a race for great works, such as writings, paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and songs. Maybe even movies - who knows?
It’s quite simplistic, I agree. But everything we’ve seen about Cultural Victories so far has been very basic. In Antiquity, it was just a race for wonders.
I believe culture is one of the things that will be reworked in the future.
Industrialization should required for domination and science victory. "Industrialization" meaning, for example, you settlements are connected by railroads to produce the yields needed to build modern units.
I hope that I like how they've done Modern France's bonuses (Napoleon nothwithstanding). I really like the Belle Epoque architectural style they're using and I think I would enjoy the aesthetic of playing as France.
I hope that Russia has a very cultural lean.
I hope there's a civ with Influence bonuses to complete a playstyle path that includes Greece/Han and Shawnee. (Siam? Germany?)
I hope the Meiji's rapid industrialization is part of their profile and that zaibatsu are referenced in some way.
I think the Mughals could be a strong candidate for a Modern Age wonder builder. I had hoped the Ming would fill that role during the Exploration Age, but...
Of course, France is another major contender, but I hope they take a slightly different approach this time. The Mughals make a lot of sense as Modern Age wonder builders due to their stunning architecture and the impressive monuments they constructed.
The Taj Mahal is one of the biggest references when thinking about wonders of the world, almost on par with the Pyramids of Egypt.

With the modern age we will finally be able to see what the actual victory conditions are for the 4 types, which is very exciting. We probably wont see them until they do a developer stream. I just hope we still have the space victory for science like in previous civs, and it isnt simplified too much. I would like a sputnik, first astronaut, first moon landing, mars colony, and alpha centauri mission. domination victory will probably be more or less the same, either control every original capital or defeat every civ. economic victory will be interesting, perhaps to do with some kind of a global monopoly or companies. culture is a wild card, it could be similar to Civ 5 and 6 with culture converting into tourism, or maybe not...
Unlikely in the base game but over the course of time, I hope there's a lot more "what if" civs that didn't really stand the test of time in reality. Modern era definitely has the fewest civs which grab my attention, so I'm hoping for more of the "out there" picks like Buganda
The First World War put an end to the last time modern Westerners have had a remotely palatable sense of aesthetics so offense is duly intended. (That being said, the convoluted mess that is the start of WW1 is actually kind of interesting--especially since post-WW2 a lot of it has gotten glossed over as "Germany did it," which is obviously the cause of the second war but much more dubious of the first, where there's lots of blame to go around.)
I like Militaristic France. They were the most militarised country in Western Europe for most of their existence and pretty much the universal antagonist to all of the neighbouring empires.
If anything Militaristic France is a take on France that is long overdue (in both its chivalrous Charlemagne + Normans form, and it's imperialistic Napoleon + French Empire form). I hope we see more of those twisty designs across the European Civs, like an agricultural Russia, a scientific Netherlands or a cultural Britain.

I just wanted Le bon roi Henri IV. (In general I hope we get a random pool in Civ7 much sooner than in Civ6 because the current assortment of warmongers sounds miserable to play with; I'll probably permaban Amina unless I'm playing as someone with a cold start bias.)

Or you can just play as Amina every game and coast off her econ bonuses...x
The custom leader pool was a sick Civ6 feature though, yeah. The opportunity to organise a special little purgatory for Alexander, Pedro and Johnny Curtains, and no one else.
