World 2008 development thread.

Also, Niknak's site is hard to navigate. Where exactly is the forum?
Ok:
1. It's NikNaks :p
2. It's not my site
3. It's not designed to be a website. It's a Jabber server. Type that in as the server in a Jabber client and you'll access the chatrooms.

Also, if anyone is interested in actually joining the team (we have a private chatroom on the server), just PM me or another team member.

I don't have a problem with that, but only if it applies to Africa really. I believe the rest of the world will either fall under a Union/alliance of some sort or a proper country. I would say like the rest of this thread, have two types of Barbarians who are enemies. The peaceful ones in Africa would constantly be harassed by the raging ones.

Several people have put forward the idea of having a few rival super states, but just so everyone knows what we're working on here, that is not it. We're not making big artificial unions. We're making a bunch of micro states, to represent the world as it is. It's possible a second scenario for this mod will get made after, that has just five or six super states. For now, we're going with a lot of civs, no big fake unions. The only real questions regarding this I think are exactly how many and which ones to include, and which to make barbarians. This I think has been pretty well close to answered for now, but as we work on it we may see some things we want to change.

Personally, I don't see the appeal of a map of earth with 5 or 6 big countries. Half the games I've played on other scenarios turn in to that by the end. The diversity of this mod is going to be what makes it unique.

Actually, I wouldn't mind a version of the mod with a lot of countries and long turns. It should be interesting, even it's only for 10-15 turns a day. =)

:goodjob:

Ryse's map and 30-35 civs won't even be that bad.

Sorry, that came out wrong. That's not what I meant at all. I also mentioned, proper country in the list of whether it would fall under an alliance. I only meant by that statement that I don't think Barbarians should be used extensively, just in Africa.

What exactly am I supposed to enter in the server box?

@All about map. Once I get the map done, (Hopefully by end of week), Then I will post it. I don't need any help with cities, DVS has already given me a bunch of maps to use.

Hey DVS, when are those XML's ready for me? :(

@Bahmo: chat.kingshomeworld.com

@kbrennan7654:I didn't know anyone else was doing map work. Once I get the file stuff set up, I will post it for you to work on. I can get to the xml earlier than.
@NwabudikeMorgan:I didn't know we were doing xml yet. I can (hopefully)start working on that later.

@Ajidica: Yeah, DVS asked me to take care of the civics and Tech tree.

Reading the newspaper today I had the thought that we should add a random event asking if one would like to meet the Dalai Lama. 3 choices: 1. No! We don't want to spoil relationship with China (no effect) 2. Yes I will meet him nonofficially (-1 relationship with China, +1 with an enemy of China) 3. Yes! Welcome him with all honours! (-2 relationship with China/refuses to talk, +2 with an enemy of China) :)

That would be a nice compensation for not having Tibet as an own civ. (Would be nice if China said every turn: Stop trading with our bitter enemy!)

By the way, we could generalise this event and choosing dissidents of every civ. So one could decide whether to meet a Chechnyan leader, too. Maybe this would only appear with dissidents from civs with a non-democratic civ...

@Ajidica: Yeah, DVS asked me to take care of the civics and Tech tree.

I actually had some ideas for Civics myself. We should compare notes.

Edit: And that server still isn't working for Spark. Starting to think that I've got the wrong program downloaded (could you link the right one), and I really don't see why we can't just scheme here.

http://www.igniterealtime.org/downloads/index.jsp#spark
download spark 2.5.8 for whichever platform you're on, and then when you get in (make a user and stuff) enter chat.kingshomeworld.com as the server. Once you're in, go to conferences tab and right click on chat.kingshomeworld.com. THen click browse service, and pick "world 2008 team" and enter the password.

Also, Bahmo, scheming on spark is easier, even if you're not logged in, when you do log in it'll display all the stuff you've missed since your last login. so you don't miss anything, and it helps the few people who are actually going to be doing the coding (which right now I think is myself, Ajidca, Niknaks93 and DVS420, unless Niknaks has given you the password) to scheme in peace, and concentrate ideas without being constantly bombarded by outside opinions. in short, we can actually get some work done.

It's still not accepting that as a server, and yes, it was the right program. Any idea why it won't let me enter a server.

you made an account, yes?
other than that it should work, the only three things are account name, password, server... so i dunno

Well, I say it's not fair that I be left-out just because this thing won't work for me.

I haven't had much time to get the map up and ready for cities. I have soem time today so I should be able to upload it today. (Note: This will have only a warrior for most civs because if you don't have that they arnt usable.)

It bears mentioning that I've only tried to download and use Spark on a public PC--could this be why I can't connect to the server?

At any rate, here are my ideas for Civics, starting with labor:

Tribalism
No Upkeep, 1 :yuck:, -1:hammers: per city, new units +1 XP.
Emancipation
Requires Democracy*, Low Upkeep, faster cottage to town progress.
Collective
Requires Communism*, High Upkeep, Farms -1:food:, +1:hammers:, can sacrifice population to hurry production.
Organized
Requires Democracy*, Corporation*, Medium Upkeep, Workers Build improvements 25% faster, faster cottage to town progress, +1:commerce: from town.
Professional
Requires Robotics*, Superconductors*, High Upkeep, +5%:hammers:, +1 Free Specialist-per-city.

*Or equivalent modern tech.
