no. definitely not. it would be very boring indeed, and who is to say which culture is superior?

Simple question: Would the world be better off if all the cultures and languages of the world were to converge into a single homogeneous culture & language?

I figure it would be; fewer divisions in humanity, the better.

EDIT: Somehow, "culture" became badly misspelled. My bad.

It would be fantastic. Most wars and strife would be gone instantly.

Anyone who thinks this is a good idea should read some history books (don't skip the fascism chapters) and only speak again once they have found some common sense.

It's ok to think of this when your only 15 or so, but for grown-ups to think so, it takes either heavy ignorance or a serious mental handicap.

I need a thread that's vaguely about languages. So I'm using this one, which is barely appropriate.

I was just on an abandonware site in French, and the link for "Telecharger" lets me download a file. "Telecharger"? Who the hell came up with that for downloading? Whoever invented the French language needs to be fired, and I mean today.

Im ok with the same langauge but oppose different culture, in fact, culture is a very diversify concept and even the lifestyle of 2 neighbours within the same culture is totally different.

But still there will be some "universal" similarities that keep them united.
E.g. same respect to human right, women rights, children rights, etc etc.

Nope. People around the world have different ways of doing things, and that way it shall be.

How would you suggest we would achieve that goal?

Depends on the culture.

It would be less violent, since wars are often a result of cultural differences.

No way, I don't think wars would decrease, we'd just find different reasons to kill each other :(
And we'd lose too much if we had to give all cultures and languages but one

Maybe the guy who invented was badly drunk, but at least he had style ;)

It would certainly be better for big business.

Humans will always try to form cliques to gain a sense of belonging and superiority over other humans - regardless of whether this is ethnicity/race, sexual preference, nationality, liberal vs conservative, etc.

So I don't think merging cultures and languages would make the world better off socially. However I think this is happening to some degree as we speak.

Things might be a lot more stable, but it would also be a lot more boring.

No. Just no. It's a terrible idea.

And this from a member of a borg-like culture that has successfully assimilated countless other cultures in millenia past.

I think the world would be better off with one language. That way everyone would be able to communicate. One culture? No.

Yes. I just don't buy into the "diversity is better" argument, which is usually followed by a comment on the Axis of Evil, a reference to Hutington's clash of civilizations, and an argument about the Crusades.

Would it be more boring if there was one culture only? I don't see why. Would you say your own culture is boring?

It never happened so there is not way of determining on how it will be.Unless there is some kind of way of imprisoning every single inhabitant on the face of the earth in some kind of controlled environment, then it can happen maybe.
