Would The World Be Better Off Without Religion?

I voted Yes. Religion was logical and perhaps required step in our journey to be modern men but science has made it obsolete long time ago. So to me religion is a relic with no function in modern world (unless you count causing animosity, agression, anxiety, etc. a function).

It think it would be pretty much the same. Agressive people would find other reasons for killing. Loving and helpful people would behave the same.

"With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."

Steven Weinberg

But moral codes were probably developed before religon.

I agree. There are rules within packs of animals ( wolves, chimps or even vampire bats for example ) - so IMHO it is easy to assume that some kind of law developed earlier then religion. Religion may be invented later to legitimate some laws imposed on others.

I think it will, do you know how many people who got killed under the christian flag? Well, it's a lot...

Recently more seem to be getting killed under the Islamic flag... *cough*

The world would be great without religion. Religion has made many problems, but has it solved any?

Yes. It united people who would otherwise be in separate tribes for a start.

It leads on from there.

I'd say the religion has altered the course of history in such great a manner, that one can't really speculate what would have happened if it had never existed.
I agree about that but I envisaged the question aiming at the present rather than the past.

We are still in many separate tribes. So scratch that. Religion divides far more then it unites.

It doesn't matter whether or not the world has religion.
Like someone said, there will be good people and bad people regardless of whether or not religion exists.

Everything with religion in it is just a big sign asking for an argument though. You've got the people who have one who think life is not possible without it and the people who think that those people are psychotic and incompetent. And then the people who really just don't care either way.

While I certainly agree that war and such would occur with just as much rapidity without religon. All you have to do is look at the resources we have wasted upon religon. Like the building of mega-churches whioch costs society millions, but provide us with no real benefit. Or the people who devote their lives to be preachers, and provide no output fr sciety, but are given comfortable lives by religon. These people are thus mooching off of society as a whole. As religon does.

And again, religion causes war. Crusades anyone? Tuetonic wars perhaps? Etc...

All of which also had other factors.

My argument is that religion doesn't so much cause wars, it stems from the same aspects of human nature that cause wars.

I'd say that religion often puts people in a ideological framework that makes it easier to get them to go to war.

But why would people go to war over something what has no proof? No one here can prove that God exists, but no one here can prove he doesn't either. So, why murder over something not proven?

Down with (organized) religion.
