As most people have said, pop ups aren't much of a problem.

Weren't you saving to buy a half decent computer

I had always assumed that this site was a commercial operation as I can't believe that Thunderfall would put in so much effort and put up with so much s*** just because he is such a nice guy.

I love this site and I love the game because of this site. Even if this site costs me my job because I spend too much time browsing here at work, I would still love this site.

The ads are a nuisance - particularly the ones with sound - but they get killed immediately.

I would be happy to hand over some of my hard earned cash to keep the site going or to make further improvements. Somewhere around $50 - 100 / year would be cheap entertainment. But as I don't believe in charity I would want something in return - how about 5 free flames per week? Or a few "get out of jail free" cards from the mods

I have voted no at the moment (partly for "overseas" reasons).

But actually as someone wrote earlier, if I were to donate money I would like to know how it would be used and what needs there are.

Is it commercial ? Is it even ? Do you get paid (not that I would criticize it, I am just asking) ? What about other mods ? How much is needed per year (5$ / month seems a lot to me, twice Conquests price)....

Another idea, though dangerous : Firaxis. They could ease the bill but there remains the independance issue.

No, TF is not, and has never been 'getting anything out of it', despite all the thousands of man-hours he had put into the site (not to mention the emotional commitments... :)). The money is all for running the site, ad-free 'cause people have been complaining too often about the ads. Excess money will be rolled over for next mth's expenses I think.

And the mods aren't paid - we're volunteers (yeah right... :p). Sometimes I wonder what I am doing all this hard mod work for... :crazyeye:

No, the pop-ups and banners don't bother me that much.

I voted no, because first it is ads then it is donations next will be everyone pays a mouthly fee, after that everyone will leave the site and the site will go in the dump. So I voted no, I really love this site but I don't want to pay for it. I can deal with the ads.

if I offended any one sorry, just telling what I think.:)

This proposal was also made at "the other civ site" but I voted no there as well. I just don't have the disposable income anymore. I'd rather save what little I do have for buying new games etc.

Although I derive great pleasure and learn so much from this and other sites I would drop my internet service like a hot potato if every site became a pay as you browse or use or whatever.

Like I said in my case I just don't have the extra income to use on services like the one proposed. Sorry.........:(

There are 3rd party programs that can be installed which turn off ad banners...

well yea if i was old enough to get a job!

I would be more than happy to throw in a couple of bucks every month. I mean really, it equates to not buying just one beer every couple of weeks. I could probably manage that.

These days I don't really have time to visit the forum, but I visit the main page at least once per day - which means ads are a pain in the behind for me.

Simply put - no. Firstly, just about every other website has popups now, so even if this one was without, the second I'd leave I'd have another to deal with.

Secondly, I'm a gamer at heart, and a civver even more - so I do make sure to put money towards excellent (and sometimes bad choices) games such as Civ3 and the xps, but if I'm going to be donating money, it'll be to help people/animals in need, not to help continue my gaming fix.

And, I'd highly suggest going through the Atari/Firaxis channels, give them the numbers of your visitors, show them that without this site they would lose a large popularity of their games, and ask them what they can do to help out.

OK.
As I said it was not about criticizing. If he made a few bucks out of it through advertisement/affiliation, I would not find that unbearable at all ! :)

Most advertisment is not so much of a problem (very few tried to install spyware). But if it does not provide sufficient funds to keep things running, I could understand that another solution needs to be tested.
I am afraid this could be the breaking of the community into different groups though. Some could donate money (= pay), some would provide major attractions (unit or mods (DYP !) creators,...... what about the rest (who might not be able to pay/contribute (age, geographical or technical reasons,....) ?

I really like this site and, if needed, I would dip in to my shallow pockets to help out.

While I'm a lurker not a poster by nature, one of the best parts about CFC is the number of participants. If more people visit and participate, I think it's worth it. If donation requests scare people off, the site will be less.

It could be a very good idea, most of the information about Civ3 is here not in their book, this site keep track of all the changes they have done through patch. The compagny site doesnt even have an up-dated guide book.

This kind of site ( Thunderfall's work+ mod time+member help+ect...) worth at least a full time salary in buisness so it mean around 40 000 $ year. Its peanut for compagny like atari.
