i only visit the forms, so i dont even see the ads.
the banner at the bottom sometimes has a movie file going and that can be annoying (slows down my computer like you wouldnt believe).
i would gladly donate something like $15, but only once. i dont think i would do a monthly thing (dont like commitments, lol).
i dont think that removing the ads is a neccesaty for me. i'd donate even if it didnt change anything at all. this is a great site and i spend a lot of time here, so it's definetly deserved some of my cash.
voted "yes" btw. sort of surprised at the current standings in the polls.

oh, but if i could buy the ability to delete my own posts, i would DEFINETLY pay for that. and maybe even agree to something more the $15.

I wouldn't pay. I'm too cheap. This is a great site. The ads don't bother me that much.

Even if I did pay and the ads were gone, I'd click to some other site and the ads will be right back there in my face, so I wouldn't pay to have them removed because I'd have pay money to every other site I visit for it to be worth it.

Maybe.... thing is I'm currently unemployed and going through college.... so what little money I have goes to my Professors and their Research projects.

EDIT: even if I did have the money, honestly I wouldn't be willing to give too much, maybe a few bucks a year but not much more.

I voted yes. I can't think of any other site in the world that I would donate money to. That's how great I think CFC is!
One condition, though: the search function has to be enabled....;)

It should either be a free site or a pay site. I think that having some people "donating" and others not could lead to elitism, which is something we've already been told is not welcome here.

The ads don't bother me, I can handle them just fine.

I don't mind the ads but I would donate - and yes, I am another impoverished student - but I think CFC is worth it.

I just hope it doesn't go corporate (shudder).

How many people have voted no due to the "eliminate popups" clause of the poll question? Perhaps a better poll might be "Would you donate to support CFC?" Maybe there'll be more 'yes's.

Otherwise, I'm in with the 'maybe's.

Well I'm fairly new to this site. but I would have to say that I agree with Alpine Trooper money can sour the mind and convolute. At the same time I belive, that for the most part this site is about pooling efforts and recources for the further enjoyment of all. I would gladly donate $10-$15 per month
and choose to trust our admistation with that responsability

Concepts are meant to be expounded-upon.....RU expanding?

[punch]

No way.

I'd much rather put up with the rubish advertisments than give up any of my hard earned money.

Ah, just remembered something I meant to touch on with my previous reply:

Donations should be anonymous (ie. other posters shouldn't know who has donated), and should be without individual incentive. Donating should not confer special priviledges or status to those who donate.

On another note, I would like to mention that I find the idea of corporate sponsorship abhorrent. Signing on with Atari or Firaxis would throw our freedom of expression out the window. I suspect few people would enjoy a civfanatics that toed the company line.

sorry got no credit card , and if i had one i would not donate for an ad free site (i have a popup killer :P and i dont even notice banners anymore) , on the other hand i might pay to keep the site online (if i had a credit card that is)

I might donate if I could, but I can't.

I hate the popups more than I hate Bizmarck; I'm all for it. You could just try it; open a path for donations and see if you can generate enough to replace the ad revenue, but making it clear there's no promises. That's worked surprisingly well on other sites.

I don't mind the poups too much myself. I'd rather close a window or two every time I visit than part with cash. But then, I'm one of the aforementioned cheapskates :)

Another problem is that you may lose some of the international flavour by asking people to donate. Relative costs-of-living make it harder for some people to make similar sized donations.

The adds don't really bother me, however I would make a small donation to keep CFC running (even if it had no effect on the pop-ups). :)

I love this site, but being that I use Mozilla Firebird to browse the web, seeing ads is never a problem for me because I can block them. Besides, if you really got crafty and started hosting the images off of your own server so that the only way to view this webpage (and those like it on the server) was to allow ALL traffic in, including the banner ads, then I'd either ignore them or stop frequenting this site.

I understand it takes money to run a website as dedicated and full-featured as CivFanatics, but it's really too narrow of a website to be attracting big-name advertisers, and you've got users that are generally a little more computer-savvy reading this site than your average AOLer so they can block ads all day long. I would see if you could get Sponsors like Firaxis and Atari to front the money for running this website, as it obviously is only promoting their games in the first place.

That's just my $0.02.
