An ecumenopolis is a planet that is completely covered by urban area, with practically zero areas not paved over and replaced with high rises. The question is, would you be willing to live in such a location?

Assume the following: your material life on this ecumenopolis will be very good. You will have a very comfortable apartment (no single family homes as we know them today, they don't exist on this world for obvious reasons), and a high paying job that you enjoy. This world isn't completely paved over; much like any city today, there are still some green spaces for parks and the like. But, no matter where you go, you can never get outside the densely built up city without leaving the planet.

So, vote. And post.

I would not wish to live in such a place. I need a country retreat.

I would not want to live on such a place, as I'm used to having nature close to me. Certain more concrete filled city parts of Helsinki are enough to make me feel miserable.

Hell yes. Coruscant is awesome. Even after it got terraformed and stuff and nonsense and yeah I like cities. I mean, it'd suck having to give up backpacking, but it's not that terrible.

I sure would.

No way.
I need a break from time to time.

I'd be tempted to say yes just for the novelty but after a while it'd suck not being able to escape to the wilderness.

You can backpack in cities.:goodjob:

hell yeah.

You don't get the same pictures. Also, getting stuff is easier when you're in a city. Generally. Curse my failure to add extra modifiers!

I love cities. Especially large one's. So yeh I would want to live there. I live in a city of 7 million anyway, so if I want to see any type of greenery I have to travel at least 4 hours minimum. So it wouldn't be that hard for me to put up with it.

Yes, seeing as how if we built the planet into that, we have space travel to feed the planet. No reason I cannot take vacations to the wilderness somewhere else.

However... I wouldn't want that to happen to Earth.

If the affluent suburbs are too congested for me... I highly doubt I can take such a place. Hell, I can't stand Chicago even.

It would be nice to visit, maybe spend a week or two in here and there, but I couldn't live there for any extended period. Quite the opposite.

I don't understand why anyone would prefer to live in such a world, rather than the world we currently live in.

The thread title and the poll question are asking two different things. The thread title asks whether I would want to live in such a world: the answer is no. I would be willing to live in such a world, insofar as I actually am at the moment.

But that's the point, isn't it. We can live in urban areas if we want to, and we can live in the countryside too. And we can live in an urban area and go to the countryside for a break, if we want to. Or we can live in a nice town in the countryside, pop ~50,000-100,000, with wide roads, shopping centres, low traffic, and still have countryside, if we're willing to forego 24/7 living. We can choose to do any of those things - or anything in between - in our current world.

I don't understand why anyone would be willing to give up that choice.

I'd never make it. And btw, what about water? What habitable planet is there out there without large areas of water?

No, but if there were other planets I could go to that weren't so bad it'd be better. Considering the scenario thats not impossible. YAY STAR WARS!
