Oh, I love it. While it doesn't have the depth of the original, it does have this one more mission-urge.
Awesome!

My killer team :) (well, actually my best sniper is in the hospital, normally the last one is a sniper instead of an assault).

Bah, serves you right, VRCW. It's God punishing you for your misogynistic ways. :D

You get more than a one liner, for sure. Here's one example, xeno-biology. Note the scrollbar on the right that's hiding even more of a description than is being shown.

Ah, good. I was afraid the initial project description I saw in the demo was the only thing players get.

Yeah, I considered my first game I was playing my basic learning curve (*)... There were some irritating surprises in store for me.

"Sure, UK, you can buy my thinman sectoid corpses."
"WTH do you mean I need three thinman corpses to research this other thing??"

(*) Didn't mean to imply I'd finished the game. But there came a point where my poor excavation/building/selling/etc decisions had basically crippled my game, so it went in the wastebin.

More details, please.
I'll spare you all the details, but a fundamental thing is the inventory management. In the original it was a big part of the game, and there was a lot of variety of things that could go in inventory.

With XCOM you're only allowed one item (out of a max of, I believe 8 different items).
So it really reduces the possibilities and strategy, inventory wise.

Must be said, from a gaming standpoint this isn't per se a bad decision. It's thew core of this game, being forced to choose.
Will you take a medkit, a grenade or some extra armor?
And I must say I don't disagree with that choice. But it does make it more shallow.

You wouldn't want to buy this game in the part of England I live in. The way the title is pronounced, the people here replace the "o" with a "u".

And I bet the game. ... So anyone try the multiplayer yet?

No. Don't know if I ever will, either. Not really that big on multiplayer games. Only reason I got into it with mass effect is because you have to to have a complete single player game experience.

I've seen guys play Terror from the Deep in multiplayer - looked like a lot of fun.

Anyway, what is this about the soldier classes? How useful are they, comparatively?

The "assault" class? They're all soldiers, but either sniper, assault, support, or heavy once they get promoted to squaddie. They all have some nice perks and I find it's a neat way to customize your soldiers. Kind of hard to really get into without writing a strategy guide, though. Lesse... with sufficient rank they can take a reaction (snap) shot even if not in overwatch just by having an enemy come within 4 tiles. They can also take an evolution to pop off two quick shots at the same enemy instead of one, but with reduced chance of critical... and "run and gun" is always nice.

The one bad thing is that they're randomly assigned that, so you can be top-heavy with one class. I've dismissed a few snipers already because I really don't see the purpose, given how I personally play it, of taking more than 1 or maybe 2 on a mission and more than 2 backups seems silly.

Btw, I just quit for the night. Started a terror mission in Shanghai and I counted six chryssalids within the first 2 rounds and was like, "nope, no more tonight..."

On a mission not long before that one I was taking a few recruits out on what I thought would be a milk run operation wtih a few veterans so they could get some shots off and get their squaddie rank. That's the mission the game decided to introduce me to the new, modern cyberdisc. One squaddie died. The rest of the team made it back, but none without injuries that took them out of rotation for anywhere from 5-13 days. Will never again allow more than one recruit on a mission at a time.

Irena Smirnova, my Colonel sniper, is kicking arse and taking names all over the place! Body count so far for her, 48 dead in 17 missions. It's really gone through the roof since she unlocked "double tap" with the Colonel rank.

The first terror mission ate my lunch. I lost 2 of 3 lieutenants (a sniper and my only assault) and a corporal. Oof.

This is only normal. Obviously I have a lot of work to do.
