Update Year 300 (1100 BCE): And Age of Upsatarts
Trebizond
Trebizond armies are on the move! Marching south, the king of Trebizond chose to smash the Mitanni threat while it was just beginning, and in a series of smashing conflicts, has devastated the Mitanni tribes in the north; though the biggest surprise was not that the Mittani caved so quickly, but that an empire to the south -the Assyrians- has done similar; the armies have met in the field several times, and passed quietly enough, with merely a few words from each armies commanders about who they were, but the bloody handedness of the Assyrians is frightening thing, for no realm of men could surely inflict such atrocious acts as they Assyrians do...
Of course, men looking for answers go to the wise religious men of the nation, looking for answers to the gods mysteries, and even now the site fo where the Great celestial temple is being built attracts already pilgrims to its still not yet built doors.
[The new temple is gaining a great deal of fame in the region: +1 culture]
Cimmaria
Cimmeria expands -a bit more slowly, a bit more cautiously, at first at least, but the creation of a new royal regiment of horsemen, and tales that the great sword Pa-Pa (though some localities know him as Poo Poo a great heroic god inspires some great gains all by himself over the boundless step, and in no time the Cimmarians have consolidated a huge stretch of the south, and have founded not one city on the shores of the Caspian, but two, and it seems that the settled life is finally becoming more attractive to the people of Cimmaria.
[The prestige of the new elite cavalry corps inspires many to join it: +75 UU]
Sparta
It Seemed that Sparta had been in a swell position to capitalize on its previous gains in the Theban conflict; however, the star ascendent of Macedon counters them in full; while no conflict has yet taken place, to say that the Spartans were surprised to find all of the Adriatic coast line now occupied was an understatement; the new Nations of Illyria proper, and of Epirus alone disappoint the Spartans, whom were looking to expand in that area; the Macedon has claimed the rest of the Macedonian tribes, and now seems poised to conquer Thebes is cause for even more concern; all Said, Sparta dosent achieve much; just too much is happening in region for its former plans to be carried out thus Sparta sits this turn out, more or less
[Sparta more or less sits, and dose nothing. While this means its uninteresting, it also means it didnt spend much: +1 econ]
[The Sparatan academy of war is completed this turn: +1 Ecuation, +1 Spear
Rome
Rome seems rather befuddled during these times; not officially pursuing any avenue of expansion, border governors see fit to expand on their own terms, only one symptom of a leading council who styles itself a republic, but after bestowing some rights to the people, feels increasingly free to muck them; the breaking point however, were the recent Laws regarding the Pedigree of Nobility an infamous act that soon after being passed by the oligarchic government in Rome had smashing effects; Illyrian tribal leaders, after hearing that their formally warmly seen elder brother in Rome would not recognize their noble status refused all governerial attempts to attract these tribes in, and indeed, in the souther lands, the mainstay of the Illyrian peoples chose to form a new Kingdom of Illyria based upon the Roman precepts; and flood of former Roman aristocrats soon joined them; while they look warmly to the people of Rome, they are firm enemies of the Government.
Seen as a symbol of Repression, the people, backed by the wealth of many a now dis-enfranchised nobleman, and a populace whom wants true civil rights, rather then being the pawns of nobles, are now demanding that the head of ever noble family be killed, and the government turned over to them; otherwise, a civil war will quite ensue, and they promise that no nobleman will escape alive from such a conflict; the nation of Rome is now on the brink of civil war, or rather a Social War and it seems only the death of the powers that be will enough to satisfy the will of the Romans
[The so called Social War has brought much attention to the Romans, and commoners all around the med sea eagerly await news of the happenings in Italy, and indeed, many take on a few traits of Roman popular culture to show their support of a peoples government: +1 culture]
Euskara
Its been mediocre going for Euskara this turn; the prestige of their new religion grows, but Iberians tribesmens sentiments are less then stellar of a land they look too as a elder brother, but refuses to help his siblings; even Tartessos, the stalwart ally of Euskara is worried over the Euskaran lack of response of the great tribal wars in Gallia, over the religion that centers itself in the heart of Euskara itself; the imposing new edifice, a tribute to the religion, the great Solar Solar temple is appreciated, but because Euskaran soldiers seem to skirt the borders, and, by contrast, Tartessos has sent warrior to the front lines of combat has led many to place their opinion with the Tartessians; indeed, in the south many a Euskaran settler and explorer has come, only to find a Tartessian settlement has already been established. In the face of a Tartessos that blatantly supports the Iberians, and an Aquitane that, while not launching attacks on the Iberians, is claiming and actively defending the Celts, it will be harder for Euskara to expand the area in the future.
However, not everything is bad in Euskara; decades of attempting to build ships has still brought no benifit whatsoever to Euskkara, primarily because thus far no one has been educated enough to figure how something better might be built, but Tartessos, a land that dose find itself with an above average education level has no problem developing such ships, and as some Tartessian merchant men settle in Euskara because of the relatively cheap cost of living their, develop such ships; disliking the ill education of the populace, several get together and found a public school, the first such entity known; began off private funds, its soon gifted to the capital city as a gift (and a release of a financial burden) after the great results are seen. It is hoped that the Euskaran king will look after improving the education of the people now that the benefits of doing so are known
[Tartessian merchants introduce education, and more advanced ship building into Euskara: +1 education]
[Euskara invents a new form of sword, and it quickly becomes popular as both a weapon of war, and as a fashion symbol amongst male Euskarans: +100 swordsmen]
Hatti
The Storm of Hatti is unleashed Under banner proclaiming the glory of their great Storm God, the chariots of the Hittites thunder in the land of Lydia; quickly pillaging the **** out of Lydia, hundreds of pounds of gold, a mighty city, and countless slaves now bow to Hatti. However, interesting circumstances do always arise in do time, and now is one of those times; while the main of the Hittite army was crushing Lydia, and pressing its captured army into slavery, the Mittanni, pushed by the Trebizond and Assyrian armies into but a section of the lands they once dominated launch a last ditch attack on the only power not to attack them, the Hittite empire; however, such was the fury of the assault, the few regiments of spear men left to defend the border were quickly slaughtered, and as Hittite armies dominated Lydia, so to were the Hittites in the south dominated.
With a dire situation in the south, the drown prince of the Hittites offered the now enslaved army of Lydia a chance to redeem themselves; fight for Hatti, and they will be freed, and let do what they would wish, for the Hittite main army was in little condition to fully fight the Mitanni after the utter conquest of a nation.
The Lydians did it; if they didnt, they would be enslaved, and while ti would have been satisfying seeing similar of the Hittites, they as slaves of slaves, would likely just be killed if the Mittani reached the Hittite hinterlands; if they took the weapons, but betrayed their masters, the Hitties would kill them, for their were too many Hittites to take on, but the Mitanni would surely plunge deep into the Hittites land, and who knew what consequences that would spell for old Lydia; conversely, if they did take the weapons, and fight the Mitanni, they would win spoils of war, and freedom to back to their homes, and back to their families. Taking up sword and Spear, The men of Lydia fight off the Mitanni curs in a series of bloody confrontations known collectively as the Mittanic Wars culminating in the a smashing victory, the Mitanni are driven out of the land of the Hittites, and Lydian prestige is somewhat restored.
[Losses: 50 Spear men, 23 Archers, 60 UU]
[Some of the Lydians remain in the Hittite army, and serv as swordsmen: +75 swordsmen]
[The wealth of the Lydians and Mittani are at the disposal of Hatti: +2 Econ]
Qin
In the land of Chin, a fantastic new project is begun, first in hopes of creating a great northern wall across all the nation of the Chinese culture; however, this fell aprat rather quick; the Yan do show some interest in a military alliance, but nothing near the unification that the Qin are pushing for; the Han and the Qi are totally uninterested; the Qi arnt much interested in the rest of the region at all; they are turning their attention unto the open sea, and have a blossoming maritime empire in the works; the Han are otherwise expanding over the mainland in fairly good course, keeping up well with the Qin.
However, the Qin attention to the North ignores the situation to the south; the Barbarians known as the Quiang have developed a nation! A barbarian people whom share nothing in common culture with the Qin, or other Chinese powers, that such a nation a has developed right on the door step of the Qin empire worries the people greatly.
[The People dont know what to do about the Quiang; souther governors, imitating the great wall in the north, build great southern dykes]
Saba
The lands of the southern Desert blossom in these years; a recent trade rout with egypt has blossomed that has brought much in the way of riches unto the land, and the lands around it; to the south Punt is estbalished, and to the west, the kingdoms of Meroe and Axum come into being; the result is that the kingdom of Saba has an electric culture with many influences, and growing fame
[The Trade with Egypt, and the sprouting of culture results in an electric mix of trade, culture, religion, and people in the Saba capital: +1 culture]
Athens
Athens continues upon the path of Scholarly learning, but is a nation teeter-tottering; the Minoans have caught of a foul wind coming from Athens in their direction, and naval patrols just outside Athenian and Spartan seas have picked as of recently; otherwise, Athens close nit position with Sparta directly threatens its northern interests in its Macedonian and Thracian colonies, of which the Macedonians (or Minoans for that matter) could overrun in a matter of days, and to seal it, the Athenian public arent particularly eager to got war anyway; the result is a political fiasco in Athens; a warlike partner with zealous religious people whom take the very active opinion that the Athenians are a bunch of dirty heathens, and a Populace whom isnt particularly motivated to go to war, yet with two power neighbors whom arnt very happy with them anyway
[While the Athenians dont really want to go to war, they dont want to be conqoure either: +150 spearmen]
Cumans
The Cumans establish themselves some what more to the west, though their primary focus is establishing a new city in the area of the balck sea; its a small settlement, but with much potential to grow in the future; in a area where agriculture is quite successful, it is an attractive area to settle, close to the sea, it has a warm water port, and the opportunities to trade with powers in the south are nigh endless; the Thracians to the west are on guard, but seem willing to talk now, should the Cumans request it, but will likely react violently should it seem the Cumans are encroaching on their lands
[Grain trade, in small quantities is already beginning with southern powers in small amounts: trade route with any power on the black sea only costs 2 econ]
Aquitane
The Land of Aquitane is a land in strife; the bare facts are beginning to confront it; expanding both to the east and west, the Soldiers of Aquitane are beginning to see the rigors of constant warfare; Celtic refugees from both sides are looking to get into Aquitane, mostly women and children, running away from the devastation and warfare the gradually encroaches on the core lands of Celtic culture; however, expansion into the area, rebuffed by a fresh regiment of raised soldiers is enough to give confidence ot he people that perhaps Aquitane will indeed come to their aide; people in the path of Aquitane soldiers readily put themselves under its banner, and all across the borderlands with the Germans and Iberians, battles in the name of Aquitane are being fought. However, all this dose not come without cost; when it becomes apparent Aquitane isnt actually fighting, expansion slows down, and on the flip side, Celts in the isles of the Brigantes tribes want nothing to do with the people of Aquitane, whom they view as war mongers, as compared to the Irish, whom have given them many a gift before.
[far different from the wars and raids and blood shed, soap is invented. Ahhhhhh, refreshed and clean: +1 culture]
Svealand
The Men Svealand finally drive out the Germans from Schweden! An amazing a achievement, all said, it dose much to impress other in the are, and many a tribe is contemplating Joining them; however, the salve trade continues, as raids across the seas continue unabated.
[The finaly thrusting out of the Germans has gained them much notoriety in their homelands: +1 culture]
Babylon
Babylon quickly eats the remaining Elamites; in a no contest battle, the shattered remains of the Elamite army are shot by arrows, or trampled under a hundred hooves; with the Elamites now totally subdued, the Persian and Medean Empires have never been on more alert, and their patrols have been doubled; if Babylon should attack them, it will not be anytime soon in which the Babylonians will get the surprise, by land at least.
To the north, in Assyria however, it is another story; the Assyrians make a heavy show of force, but its almost shown in jest of the Babylonians, almost an invitation for Babylon to attack, and if the Mittanic conflict with Assyria was any indication, Assyria may be ready for a Babylonian strike; the most brutal conquerors yet seen on earth, what the Assyrians inflict on the war path are unspeakable and bloody, but within a few months, the Mittani were a quelled problem for Assyria, and while it seem the Assyrians are getting ready to launch more expansion into the lands of the Mitanni, there are indications that the Assyrian storm may turn south, unto the walls of Babylon as well...
[Losses: 50 Chariots]
[While the Babylonians have a strong war machine themselves, the bloody handed Assyrians inspire many a Babylonian to prepare for the defense of their land, should they choose to charge out of the north: +75 Spear men]
Carthage
The Carthaginians see fit to invest in a galley fleet, and seek to expand to the near by island of Sicilly; while only mildly successful, due to Roman colonization in the north, internal strife in Rome may be a prompt opening to expand at roman expense onto the island. In the west however, Tartessian empire has expanded and has a common border with the Carthaginians; not at all friendly, the Tartessians seem waiting for a trigger to launch an invasion of Carthaginian land, otherwise trading with sub Saharan Africa is somewhat successful, though whom the Carthaginians are trading with are unknown, as no Carthaginian has ever traveled into the deep south, and the middle men wont say a word about it.
[the silent trade dose have its benefits; while non are known for now, surely one day those lands will be discovered: any trade rout with a power in south west Africa, once discovered, is only 2 econ]
Ireland
The luck of the Irish continues strong on this occasion, as expansion aoccrss the land of scotlan goes well, if uneventfully; in the south, natives proclaim they woudl rather have Irish ruler then that of Aquitane, though otherwise, the only great advent is that Soap becomes popular.
[Clean clansmen are happy clansmen, and happy clansmen get forced to go shopping with clanswomen, which makes them sad clansmen, but the money goes into the economy anyway: +1 economy]
Bavira
Bavira expands somewhat well these ages, even to the south; with the internal strife in Rome not stopping them from doing so, and more friendly nature of the Illyrians and Celts these days, Bavria slowly, but surely expands south, meeting a new land, that of Liguria, centered on Arelate in the process; escaping the strife in Rome, the settlers moved west, into relatively lightly settled
land, and establishing a new nation. Indeed, Liguria isnt the only new nation to crop up; right between Bavira and Aquitane, a nation that call itself the great founder of all Celtic culture, the Hallstatt tribe decides that neither the Bavirans nor Aquitane are worthy of holding the true motherland, and promptly found their own settled nation. A rude bunch, no one particularly wants anything to do with them, and like wise, they would rather not have anything to do with their neighbors. They dont even send out greeting cards on the holidays, stuffy *****.
[Bavira makes good headway in the north, and many hope it will protect the Celts gainst the German dog people: +1 culture]
