Definitely the Mayans; if you wage war early this is THE best Civilization in C3C!

The Javelin Throwers enslavement capability will get you tons of free workers (free to aquire, and they require no unit support!), which will save you loads of cash! Also, the many early workers will improve your infrastructure drastically in the early game, resulting in an awesome early boost! Excellent for early Settler and Unit Factory cities :)

The early GA is a major downside, but the enslavement UU makes it worth it.

There's only 1 scenario I can think of (luckily, I haven't experienced it yet) where the Mayans would be a 'bad' choice, and that is if you start alone on a small, secluded island, not connected to any other landmass by Coast tiles.
Also, on Deity and above, waging early wars is VERY difficult, and will probably get you raped before you manage to enslave a single worker :p

The maya: agricultural and industrious allows them to mass produce settlers and connect those cities just as easily.

Scandinavia. Think about it: seafaring gives 1 extra movement to your ships loaded with powerful amphibious Berserks everywhere. Yikes, especially because it's a pretty nice time for a Golden Age.

I am so glad that the Mayans have such and ugly leaderhead and such terrible city names!

Their advantages are obvious, but they have next to no historical appeal to me. It is so much more fun to crush the world with roman legions or bring celtic culture to the world! :)

*gets hit by a Javelin from a Mayan player*

aargh... before I die, I will take my time for a long speech, as it is usual in movies:
From Wikipedia: "The Spanish started their conquest of the Maya lands in the 1520s."

All hail the Spanish! *cough*
I will be dead before you can sacrifice me, hehe...!

My favourite civ is of course Ottomans, I am one of them, at least my gran-grandpa used to be.:) And Sipahi rocks and roll down over anywhere.-yet it is not the best civ

I like the Byzantines for two reasons:

-I like their history, art, culture and the extremely impractical overcomplication of their bureaucracy

-Drummons let me kick the $#!t out of every one in naval combat very early in the game :D

I wonder if so many people would have chosen the Mayans if they had not been at the very bottom of the list? Maybe some people reflexively selected them without reading the category thinking that it said "other"

Persia was always good for me.

I studied Rome for a while in school and I always like to be Rome because they have one of the best early UU, the Legion.

You need Iron, but if you get some and then build a ton of Legions and use them correctly, by the time other civs catch up with better units, your ready to get Cavalry.

And I like the Roman city names.

Veii, Caesaragusta, Syracuse, ROME, Pisea, Pompei...You know.

And Caesar is really historical and its fun to play him

:)

I love going ballistic with German Panzers and take over the world, but who doesn't? ;) But what's with this whole Maya fetish already?

Yeah, worthless... that worthless agricultural and that worthless religious... they must be the two worst traits in the game...

Religious can be very handy. Fast temples and cathedrals, plus the minimal anarchy penalties make for fast changes of heart. Wanna wage war? Be Commie or Fascist! Wanna sue for peace? Immediately revert back to Democracy.

Sorry 'bout the double post...

I really like China. Good abilities which mesh well together, and a really special UU as well. It's just a shame Mao looks so weedy and pre-pubescent in his bear-skin ancient age headgear.

Omega, Lennon; I've never understood the attraction towards Germany... I guess I'm just too attached to the industrial trait. Do Panzers really make a big difference to the game's outcome by the time they become available?

Give me a B! Give me a Y! Give me a Z-A-N-T-I-N-E-S!!! Put it all together and what do you get? BYZANTINES!!!! I just love them. I love their traits and whenever I play as them, my game is always a keeper! Also, whenever I play against them, they are kind to me and are also very weak. The Byzantine AI has never had more than 5 cities in any of my games and when they do have that number, the Romans kill them, or the Celts kill them, or I kill them. I don't care which

No. If you want a unit that makes a big difference, then the Ottoman Sipahi or the Egyptian War Chariot would be best, methinks.

My favourite civilization is Germany, but they are definately not easy to play. I only have Vanilla Civ btw, but I made Conquests scenarios where I added all the new civs/units/rules... expect the Byzantines! It's stupid since they have the same position as the Ottomans so I just excluded them, but this was also good cuz I got to add my own Civ (Indus Religious)... which... seems to the best AI in all my games now. /= Dunno why. Also too bad I couldn't add agricultural and seafaring traits. =( Because of this, I just gave the civ traits according to their starting techs.

hi!

I've started to enjoy archipelago maps a lot and voted for the vikings, possibly because i've played them the most.

Really enjoyed the byzantines in the COTM the other week even though i lost, really like their bombarding triremes!

Haven't played the english much, they look like fun to. Seafaring is definately my favourite trait, trading is so fun when you know everyone and everyone only knows you =)

cheers,
john

I voted Iroq, but Celts and the Dutch are good too, depending on level and map form.
The Mayan's UU is just too early for my flavour. With the Iroq, Celts and Dutch I can postpone my GA until I've switched away from despotism and their UU wil still rock hard
Mayans are harder b/c my teching usually means I don't have IW until I've slingshot the Republic. They were my first choice for a long time in C3C, but as I'm just getting comfortable with emperor (consistent wins), they just don't feel as powerful as before. No IW and the choice between (often) a despotist GA or fighting off an emperor AI with warriors and spears (with c3c's resource scarscity you're quite often stuck w/o horses in your imediate vicinity and have to fight for them).

- Iroq are good on any level and any map. Two of the game's best traits (commercial is undervalued by most players imhso). A great UU. Add to that: Alphabet to start the race towards an early Republic which is the main reason the Iroq are better than the Celts imhso.
- Celts are imhso better on the higher difficulties than on the lower b/c cheap temples are more powerful on higher levels (I don't play Sid and hardly ever Diety though so may be different for those levels). Gallic: a very good UU although imhso maybe not as good as the Mounted Warrior, mostly b/c MW upgrades to Knights. No Alphabet.
- Dutch are the clear winners on 'pelago maps and sometimes on continents as well b/c of the seafaring trait. Very good UU if you're hard pressed on the higher difficulties and have just survived into the MA. I rarely build much defenders, but with the Dutch I make an exception. Alphabet starting tech.

Agricultural is the best trait even w/o early access to fresh water. Remember that once you've switched away from Despotism, all cities have +1 food, not only the ones built on fresh water.

All in all: on an all random map, I'd choose the Iroq every time.

Either Germany or Japan.
I love the Religious and Militaristic for Jap and the Militaristic and Scientific for Germany.

I like both Persia and the Mayans, but it seems that lots of others do aswell. Berzerkers and Sipahis have to be two of the best UU added in the expansions but I am also very fond of the Seafaring and Comercial trait combo England has.

What? No Korea?

I guess no one has experienced the pure joy of sauntering in on a newly unprotected city. It's all about lethal bombardment! H'wacha's rule!
