I'm in fact totally unaware of what a "monty python" movie is? Something to do with a snake or something? ;) Somebody enlighten me.
British humor at its worst/best (depending on how you look at it ;) )

Holes!

Yes, I have a very odd taste in movies. VERY odd.

Cannonball Run

Well, because it was just stupid. Haven't seen it since I was a teen. I'm sure if I actually watched it again my opinion would change.

CTHD, although very enjoyable, IMHO is not outstanding in anything apart from (maybe?) its music.

You... you pagan! Now I will have to convert you! :D

I agree with you on the music part. It's simple fantastic, nothing less. Several of the numbers from it's soundtrack are on the "top 25 played" list in my iTunes.

Its martial arts is average at best. Excellent wirework do not a fight sequence make
It depends which fight scene you look at. The one at the Inn, where Long (Zhang Ziyi) totally kick ass is very nicely made. And the one where she fights Shu Lien is flawless, really.

Its cinamatography is also so-so. The Hero is better in that regard
But dude, Zhang Yimou (Director of Hero) is reknown for his cinematography. He is among the best of the best at this. No one should be regarded as so-so just because they don't reach his level.

Its storyline is patchy because you never understand what this girl - the cute one really wants or why Li Mu Bai wants to teach her
I understand it. Long want's freedom. Her overprotected life makes her wanna be dependant on nobody. She want to live as a warrior, not a Princess.
That's why she jumps off the cliff end the end (She dosn't die, btw). She realise that she will not be happy with Black Cloud anyway (You can see that in her eyes when they make love in the end)
For a while, Black Cloud was what she thought she wanted. A path to freedom. But eventually she found out that she had to be true to herself, and be alone. Free.

Why Li Mu Bai want's to teach her? Well he says so himself. Because she is insanely powerfull. Her power should be used to do good, not bad (A poisenous Dragon).
Think of Star Wars here, The Jedi sees lot's of undevelloped power and wanna devellop this power, to be used by the light side.

This is also why the story is so good. You have the young, egoistic, passionate lovers who act acording to these vices and virtues. At the same time you have the elder, responsible guys who never acted because of passion, but always let their duty come first. As they grow old, they regret ignoring their love for eachother so long. It's a very complex and beautiful story.

First time I saw this movie, I thought it was good, but that was that. But then it grows on you everytime you see it. Everytime you realise something new, a detail of plot, scenery or fight. I suggest you go see it again.

Das Boot: The Director's Cut.

200 minutes long but... for once, a movie warrants being that long.
