What is your favorite speed?

I just finished a standard-sized Final Frontier game on Normal speed with dense star system setting on Prince difficulty. It took me 23 hours and a little over 250 turns. I don't how some people are claiming to do Marathon games in 6 hours.
Perhaps you nodded off at some point without realizing it? :mischief:

Well he's playing a mod which probably has a different speed. I highly doubt an unmodded BtS game would last 23 hours on normal speed. Unless you just stalled and waited to press enter for no reason other then to extend the time of the game.

Edit: Take FFH for instance. It's Epic is not fun (in my oppinion), it's slower then standard BtS marathon. Yet my preference is Epic in standard BtS, actually since I don't play unmodded BtS anymore, Epic is also my favorite speed in LoR. But LoR is designed to play out the same in terms of balance. Some mods aren't, FFH for instance, and it would seem Final Frontier is the same way, probably runs slower by design.

Well, I was largely just funnin' him, but I see what you mean. I usually only play Varietas or LoR myself (I'm losing significant amounts of sleep because of you, btw, and I don't mean that in the romantic sense.). On Epic, I find my games usually last between 12 to 16 hours if I don't get killed right away, so I suppose that 23 hours playing a mod with an adjusted speed might not seem so long.

Hmmmm....

Quick: "Oh my God! What happened?"
Normal: "What do you mean 'obsolete'?"
Epic: "Ooooh! A nice leisurely stroll..."
Marathon: "Allright. Who put the Quaaludes in my root beer?"

I guess my choice is a little obvious. :D

Why would someone put quaaludes in your root beer?

My times of 7-9 hours include me running out for dinner and leaving the game running. :)

I just recently found the Pause button works in Civ4 and I'm assuming it halts the clock, so maybe my games will be 'faster' now.

From page 73 of "Lemon's Pointless Humor Handbook":

"Using a reference to Quaaludes can often humorously convey the idea of things drastically slowing down to the point of being ridiculous, due to the action of Methaqualone as a very powerful tranquilizer. Etymology of the reference can be traced in part to the comedian Robin Williams, who has been quoted (or often paraphrased) as saying 'Quaaludes make the day go slower.' "

Or, simply a mildly sarcastic statement intended to indicate that I find Marathon mind-numbingly slow. :)

Tolkien said the main criticism of LOR was that "...it was much too short". Marathon simply spreads the scientific progress out. There's a million things to do each turn - lots of stuff to plan and think over. I presume it's a matter of taste, but I like a game that lasts a while - I think up strategies while at work, prepare for a campaign while on my commute. When I start up the game again I have goals and purpose. That's why I'm a Civfanatic and not a TV watcher.

Lol it takes 3 posts of clarification to explain your one earlier post Lem

I guess if we had read the handbook... lol.
Well, it isn't like it never happens in r/l or anything. I once met a man from Texas who graciously told me that he was having such a hard time understanding me, that I really needed to be subtitled.

I was speaking 100% plain English (albeit, with an Irish accent...) at the time.

Of course, I did see that NBC subtitled Tony Blair once, so I guess I shouldn't feel left out. :mischief:

Most Americans need at least three pints of Guinness in them before they can properly discern an Irish lilt.

lol! that's hilarious

And no you shouldn't feel left out, I was just having a bit of fun. :goodjob:

Reminds me of the story (supposedly true) of the Texas housewife who, after Lyndon Johnson became President, said: "Isn't it nice to have a President without an accent for a change?"

I tend to play normal speed as I haven't really figured why the other speeds exist, execpt for marathon to make wars easier...

Yeah that's exactly how I play. The only things on TV that can get me away from Civ are the football ("soccer") and The Tudors. And now I've got my new PC I can play the Quot Capita mod with 18+ Civs on a Huge map, Marathon speed and Mastery victory, and hopefully not have to give up before the end because of the lag.

Normal.
Pacing is good, and games don't take too long.
On Marathon and Epic you get way too much time to use units and there is so many end-turn-turns early on. And games take forever for me. Yawn.
And Quick is too quick, prolly works fine in MP (does in FfH2 MP at least).

I know. And it was pretty funny, too. ;)

I used to say that until I switched to Epic. Marathon is too mind numbing, but Epic seems to give you some breathing room, without bogging you down. It's much more balanced, IMHO.
