I have seen many polls here except for this one

Dyes: +1 commerce.
Furs: +1 shield, +1 commerce.
Gems: +4 commerce.
Incense: +1 commerce.
Ivory: +2 commerce.
Silks: +3 commerce.
Spices: +2 commerce.
Wines: +1 food*, +1 commerce.

I'll take the bonus shield/bonus commerce combo: furs. Gems a close second.

But...but... irrigated grassland wines do get the extra food in Despotism, that makes it number 1. Fur is second. The Pink Elephants comes in third, followed silks and gems in fourth and fifth place.

I like furs, since if you settle on it the city tile produces 2 shields IIRC. Can't beat an extra shield in your first city right out of the gate.

Wines come a close second. Maybe even better than furs in a good situation i.e. irrigated cow and irrigated wines make for nice start to settler factory

Gems - 3rd, better for late game, when workers can afford to spend time working them, and citizens can afford to be placed on them.

Wines appear on plains too; no bonus food for irrigation there...

In C3C, I like ivory the best.

Wines on plains are nice too (although not as nice as on grassland); they act like a BG with an extra gold.

Gems. The greatest possible archievement for me is to find a place with 4 or five gems, found a city there and place Kopernikus, Newton and SETI there.
However, if I then fail to get one of these, I am ofter so disappointed that I just quit the game...
I still love my gems.

Ivory is my favourite. In C3C, it allows you to build SoZ, and it if you can get on plains with a river, tons of gold.
