Your Thoughts on Service Academies

Some people are simply against the US.

They want to make the US as weak as possible (divide it up, slander it, etc).

They want to make the US military as weak as possible (get rid of academies, slander it, etc).

The same people apologize for terrorists and support any muslim in any event. Often, they even misconstrue simple events so as to portray muslims as victims.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out why. Sure, they will tell you every reason in the world why we should get rid of academies, and why we should divide the US (divided we fall?)... but it doesn't take a genius to see their real motives. Note, they never participate in religious debate - just the anti-US stuff. Why? Because then it would be too obvious and it would not take someone of my intellectual capacity to see exactly what they are.

Yeah, but I think Civ General was asking about how to become an officer directly from being a civilian.

The Army has programs for direct commissions for doctors and lawyers (and perhaps a few other professions, you have to ask a recruiter to find out the current list). Once out of med/law school (and in the case of attorneys...pass the bar) professionals can indeed qualify for a direct commission in the Army. If accepted, they go to a short 'military familiarization' course (sort of a gentlemans basic course) and then on to their Officer Basic Course.

Damn, if I enter. I'm gonna end up in the enlisted ranks :(.

Er. I have done almost 23 years as an enlisted. There are far worse things in life than being enlisted. If a steady source of income, free medical/dental, and job/skill training arent your bag then just continue what you are doing.

Being unemployed, no thanks.

Who really wants a Drill Seargent in your face and screaming like a Banchie?

Link to video.

To top it off, I dont want to come home in a body bag after being shipped to Iraq or Afghanistan.

I think you mean Banshee. And DIs today arent like the guy in Full Metal Jacket anymore.

I've never met anyone who wanted to either. But the good news is the odds are heavily against that happening.

You have a better chance of being struck by lightning than being killed in Iraq or Afghanistan. In fact, you probably have a better chance of being killed in a freak toaster accident than being killed in Iraq of Afghanistan.

On top of that, you have a greater chance of being killed as a JO in Iraq or Afghanistan than if you were to be a junior enlisted.

Hello. I used to post on here but got lazy and for the past year have just read through the posts and looked at the funny pictures in the Humor & Jokes forum.

Glad I came across this!

I am very motivated to go to West Point and have gottena few letters from them, so at least they know I'm interested. I'm still a bit shaky on my chances, so for those in the know and those who might have attended/been admitted to West Point, could you tell me what my chaces are with the following credentials?

30 ACT composite
1st in High School Class of roughly 220
Class Treasurer (Freshman year)
Class President (Sophomore Year)
Class President (Junior year, currently)
Participated in State Superintendent's Student Advisory Council (For the state of Oklahoma)
State Geography Bee contestant 5th and 8th grade year

Heres the clincher though, I participate in athletics but have not received a Varsity Letter. I'm in good shape and can ace the Push-up and Sit-up section of the physical test and get about 6 minutes flat on the mile (thank you Cross-Country).

Lengthy, but I'm just curious what all of you (specifically those in the know) think my chances are.

Thanks!

What I was always told you never know if you don't apply. The application is free and if you really want to go you will be able to navigate the process.

The major component is how competitive your district is. For where I live for some reason everyone wants to go to Air Force and getting a nomination for west point isn't the most difficult. If you live in a competitive district it would be a different story.

Seeing how its your junior year apply to the West Point SLS. It is harder to get into than the school itself but I hear its a rewarding program and it helps your application significantly.

Really I have to say it is mostly your drive and passion that will get you into West Point. If you don't have it you won't have a fun time during the application process because parts of it are a female dog (looking at you DoDMERB).

So all in all chancing a person is never really good idea. There are a lot of factors besides the numbers you listed. Contact your local field force and see when the next AIM session. From there you can decide if you want to apply or not. (If you want to go to West Point apply to the West Point SLS. Its a very quick application and will give you a week of living at west point during the summer.) So basically no one will know your chances unless you try.

Fair point, but I still have friends doing the job and old cadets on the other end of it - while the American NCO corps may have softened up, the wonderful NCOs of P Company and other drillmasters have not. Mind you, it could just be that everyone whinges more nowadays.
