This is an idea i was playing around with today, and I'd like the community opinion on it.

Basically, there's been talk on these forums and on AIM about the possiblity and practicality of a zombie based NES. I think I have an idea on how to work one.

The plot premise is, just for fun, a NESing convention in Generopolis, USA (City Motto: Most Generic American City). We stay at the finest hotel in the downtown area, until on the second morning of the convention we wake up to find the lower level of the hotel overrun with zombies. To make matters worse, we hear on our handy radio that the government has announced that all survivors have exactly one week before they take "extreme sterilizing measures" (aka nuke us all).

I have been thinking on loose player stats and of course inventory. To make things realistic, people will have to balance their stats as well as inventory, as one person cannot carry three tons of stuff. The current stats idea looks like this:

[player name]
Fitness: This defines how much you carry and how hard you can hit the zombies with your handy baseball bats and other weapons.
Agility: This defines how quickly you can move out of the way, basically, this is the defensive stat.
Determination: This is how well you deal with stress. The lower, the more likely you'll crack under pressure.
[inventory here]

If you get bit, you're likely dead, though you may have a little time to help your comrades.

Now this one is not a competition, unlike most NESes. The players would be all trapped together, and you all would have to pick a leader as well as distribute equipment. Who will carry all the food for instance? If one person messes up, it could mean disaster for the group.

Now for the fun part: the NES would be more or less real time. The updates would be done in a cheap and easy manner, mostly just stats and deaths, should someone screw up. Each hour in real time will be one in game time, and updates will occur when important things happen. When the one week is finished given by the government, you all lose.

Any thoughts on the above?

I am in like Flynn.

Can we get a map of Generalopolis? I need to find the nearest hardware store :P

Sounds good, although I don't know exactly the time system would work for people in different time zones, people with jobs or school, and if people go on vacation.

Can we leave people 4 dead?

Can we leave people 4 dead?

It would be interesting to have an NES where there were some secret players controling a zombies or zombies.

Also, is this going to be realistic, with characters having realistic names and actions? Or is it going to be more of a silly NES where characters would have our user names for names?

Cool except running a NES in real time has huge logistical difficulties for those of us who are across the pond. This NES would have to rely on all the NESers using the same time zone which would equal some late nights and early starts for some. It would be unfair if an event happens and the player is at work or asleep and as a consequence their character dies. I would also advise slightly more detailed stats maybe a gun use stat, to govern gun damage and accuracy and and ingenuity stat to stop things getting too out of hand.

Well, the time zones arent actually that much of an issue if you think about it. The start time of the NES doesnt nessacarily have to coincide with the real life time. I guess the best way to do updates would be when anything important happens, update then. Though, when you think about it, sleep is needed at some point or another, so when camp is made perhaps for a night, then we could provide a bit of a pause for players to catch up. Also, generalized orders can be given, after all we're not talking about a highly thought out NES, most of the stuff would be planned by the participants probably at the beginning.

more detailed skill stats would be interesting. Firearms would make sense as a stat.

@Ninja Dude, I suppose it'd be realistic as much as possible. I certainly can't stop someone from using the name they have here, particularly since the premise would be an NESing convention.

I don't think that stats would change from the start. The way i imagine that is by perhaps giving a certain number of points at the beginning, and that's that. We're only talking about a week after all.

On the idea of scheduling, what if we did it slightly more spread out, perhaps 1 hour=2 hours game time or so forth? Yes, the issue is of course that people can't really get orders at certain points, but if ya'll are moving from point A to point B, then that hardly matters

Was also thinking of food and supplies such as that. Hunger and thirst would have to be satisfied or stats would decline (until they are refreshed). Thoughts on that idea?

Hunger would simply have a detrimental effect on stats as we are talking about a week. Thirst massive detriment and death in three days or less depending on stats, weather conditions and physical exertion.

That would make sense, also, we could bring in the possibilities of disease from infected waters and spoiled food. A sore stomach and active bowels can make travel much more difficult, especially in what would effectively be a war zone.

And of course V and D contribute to dehydration. Yes that's also a good idea. Your reasoning for how this would work is good enough for me. I will join if I can.

I can eat your brains? :p

To put that into human speak: Can I be a zombie overlord?

Aww, the only Zombie NES is for me is a World War Z type NES :p

I would make a map that shows what we can see of the hotel like rooms, halls etc and use dots to show the human characters.

@condor green: Yes, but that'd be an awful lot of work, now wouldnt it? Especially because it would just be one part of the possible city.

@masada: Half the point would be the interaction between the players trying to escape. Do you abandon Nuclear Kid to the zombies, or eat him to ward off starvation? The choices of the players towards each other is perhaps one of the most entertaining elements.

Eating humans wouldn't make us any better than the zombies, though.

@EQ but I want to be a zombie, half the fun of zombie games is figuring out how to kill people :p
