Came upon this info and thought it was pretty amazing:

"Maus" (Mouse) Tank

Weighing in at 188 metric tons (US M1 Abrams main battle tank weighs 69 tons)
Only two ever built, their only ever operation was trying to escape the red army at the end of the war. One broke down, the other was destroyed

more pix here

P1000 "Ratte" (Rat) Tank
http://members.tripod.com/~fingolfen/superheavy/p1000.html

As indicated by its name, estimated to weigh about 1000 metric tons
Construction was never completed and the project was scrapped. Later the turret was used as a coastal battery by the Nazis

You aint seen nothing yet.

Some of you history buffs might know of a monster railway mounted heavy artillery piece by the name of Dora:

(yes those are people in that pic on the right)

What you may not know is that there were plans to make the Dora self-propelled - The P-1500 "Monster"

Weight: Estimated 1500 tons
However, the project was scrapped before construction began
More info: http://www.panzerschreck.de/panzer/pzkpfw/p1500.html

Ammunition that the Monster would've used: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:80_cm_Gustav_shell_compared_to_T-34.jpg

edit: Fixed pic of dora (beautiful isnt she?)

:wow: wow just wow although Hitler did like complex machines but yet again wow :wow:

Jeez, that giant artillery looks freakin terrifying. Did they really bomb cities with that beast?

I've read about the P 1000 before (At the Achtung Panzer site, which is closed for now), it seems that they eventually scrapped that project and placed it's cannons in Norway for use as Coastal batteries. Edit: Which is already mentioned by your post, which i didn' read too carefully.

Didn't they also plan a sister panzer for the P 1000? P 2000 was the name they planned for it, but it never left the drawing board.

Yeah, in the East.
Sebastopol, IIRC recieved a lot of bombing from this, and there was Anzio Annie in Italy.

You'd think they'd stop when they had to start using marine engines to provide power but oh no, the Nazis loved their massive designs.

Call them what they are - Very expensive pillboxes ;)

If I recall properly, Dora was originally made to destroy a section of the Maginot Line, but was rendered useless when the army decide to go through the Ardennes forest instead.

Some pretty amazing the weapons that were thought up during WWII. Very neat post.

BTW I'd be freaking terrified having an 80cm artillery shell fired at me.

It's always amused me that they built it primarily to shell the Maginot line but didn't finish the thing until nearly 2 years after France had fallen.

Rather reminds me of a fort that was built nearby to defend the approaches to Liverpool. They first came up with the idea for one in order to prevent Napoleon invading there. They finally started the fort in 1826 and it was finished in 1833.

Napoleon died in 1821.

Those tanks arent wacky.

british shoving a 25pounder on a valentine body without proper thought. Now that was wacky, why couldnt they just copy the StuggIII design is beyond me

Yes certainly the nazis built amazing weapons. Not only tanks and artilery but an amazing planes. The first jet plane was built by the nazis.
Just look at Horten Ho 229. Can you imagine that it's ww2 plane.

The Go-229 is indeed amazing. (Read about it somewhere before) The first time it flew was in 22 February 1945. Much better then the heavily unstable Me-163 'Comet'.
