1.29 Semi-public beta

I've had the exact same problem with Civ III 1.21g running on Mac OS X 1.2.5, so
it may not be new. I usually just force quit, load the auto-save, and continue from there.

Actually, now that I think about it, the crashes I had mentioned having once every 7 hours might have been freezes like I am having with 1.29f... I just never waited for it to end.

I started a game in 1.21g, and so far (1500 AC) so good. No bug.
I wouldn't even bother reloading with 1.29f, it just happens too often.

Anyhow...back to playing !

Hey, does having 1.29 (beta1) mean SAM Missle Batteries work now? I'm about to get into a war and realized SAMs could be a factor now.

I tried running 1.29b1 with the civ3mod.bic file from my 1.21g folder. This seems to make no difference in the warrior upgrade behavior. As I don't know what the function of this file is, I can't tell what actual difference it makes.

The bic file stores all the default rules and objects. Starting with either 1.21 or 1.29, each saved game stores this information, so once you start a game with 1.29 using a bic file, replacing that bic file won't affect a game already in progress, just newly-created games.

If other people using the 1.29 beta would check their civ3mod.bic file, I'd appreciate it. It may be that the beta installer isn't updating it properly.

Brad,

I just checked and I have the 29 April, 02 .bic file as well. It looks like you may have that problem with the installer.

So no ideas on crashing in Mac OS 9? I've tried a few more games and they also randomly crash at particular points, and nothing I do seems to change it.

Here is mine.

Brad,
Just had another crash -- the console log is below. I don't want you to be inundated, but would it be easier for you for us to PM or e-mail you with the crash logs -- I tried via the messaging system on the boards, but it will not let me directly e-mail you.

Anyway, if you're running on OS9, you need to make sure you've got plenty of memory for Civ3. This means having roughly 140 megs free when you launch the game. If you are seeing sporadic crashes under 9, double-check that, and if possible give Civ3 a little more memory, like 192 megs just to be safe. This isn't an issue under OSX.

How annoying. I think it was a problem with the dates on the new files - they all had creation dates from 1904, so I think the installer thought they were older and didn't replace them.

I've put up a new installer here:

http://www.macmame.org/Civ3_129_b1_1.sit

Try this out and let me know if it gives you the proper civ3mod.bic files.

Regarding crash logs, I'd rather they were e-mailed to me. If you put Civ3 in the subject line, they'll make it past my spam filters with no problems. :)

If you do get a crash, please try and let me know as specifically as possible what you were doing at the time, or if you weren't doing anything, what the game was doing if it's apparent.

soooo does anyone else's console quote HHGG at them? Or is marvin trapped in my computer, and my computer only?

That fixed it, thanks. New games now allow the upgrade. It installed a civ3mod.bic file dated 12 June 2002. I'm still not sure why I was getting the problem and others were not.

I have three recent crash logs that all point at the same failure point, but in different games. One of them was in 1.21g so it's not specific to the beta. I'll be happy to send you the logs, but your profile settings don't allow mail or pm. Am I missing something?

(edit) I've checked back over my crash logs, and I have a total of 13 crashes since the beginning of the year. They all look to me as though they happened during modal dialog or alert situations. The most recent were in diplomacy situations.

Brad,
1.21g supported the following sizes that are not in 1.29f.

1280x854
1440x900

I think these may be powerbook only sizes (not sure). Playing the game at 1024x768 when I am used to 1280x854 is pretty frustrating and kinda fuzzy looking. Thanks again for all the work.

They're not just PowerBook sizes, they're the default sizes, not to mention the only sizes that look good (without stretching or not using the whole screen) on any Mac with a widescreen. (Like the new 17 inch iMac, of which I'm a proud owner since the last 10 days :goodjob: !) So it's quite an important resolution setting to have in Civ3... at least from my perspective! (And quite a few others beside me...)

You might want to take a moment to read the 1.29 readme file. ;)

Not I. But this crashing thing never happened before I loaded the 1.29 beta, even when I was playing max number of civs on a large map. So, as you might guess, I'm suspicious of the upgrade being the cause of these unexpected quits. If you know anything about this under OS 9, or if you know when the official release will be available for download, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything. How much memory do you have free when you launch 1.29? Have you tried increasing the amount allocated to Civ3?

Brad,
What self-respecting male ever reads the manual, directions, readme file, etc?

I have a request... can you add in a screen resolution optimal for the new 17" powerbooks, their standard resolution is 1440X900 I think.

I am still busy finishing the GOTM so I havent really been able to try out 1.29 yet

I have both Minimum Size and Preferred Size set to 210,000k, which is much, much more than the suggested size of 128 megs. I boot with minimal extensions and I have about 215 free megs, so I figured 210 would be a suitable number for Civ3. But it still crashes.

On a side note, my Mac only has 128 megs of physical memory, and I doubled that number with virtual memory. VM wasn't a problem before the patch, but does something in the way 1.29 works have an issue with it?

Thanks.

By the way, what's the exact purpose of the "accelerated production" option?
