1.52 Patch Available

This is kind of weird. Wonder movies either run absolutely perfectly, or stutter and lag and don't get past the first few frames. It seems to be either/or and there's no in between. For a few wonders everything went fine, but for others it didn't move at all. In one game the Pyramids movie went by smoothly, but in other games it would stutter. The ONLY common trait I saw is that the inability to fully play the movie only seemed to happen if I built a wonder in my capital city. If it wasn't the capital city, the chances of it playing just fine was near 100%. Very odd indeed. (All wonders worked perfectly in the initial install of the game, but the slideshows began with patch 1.09).

You can make a copy of your current game dir, then patch.
You can then play 1.09 by running the exe in the copy you made, while the normal game dir runs 1.52

This is a bit cryptic for me, so I think I'll wait until I finish the GOTM before I patch.

I tried to install the patch. I got most of the way through the installation and then it died. I got a 1706 error. I'm trying to attach a picture, but the forum isn't cooperating right now.

When I try to play, the game seems to load OK (I'm careful to use the uncached XML with Shift). I try to start a new game or load a game and get a video error. It tells me to go to some odd file location and change some random line, but the file isn't findable.

The exact message is "Your system has run out of video memory. Please trying reducing your video settings. File:\main\civilzation4.bak\SDKs\Gamebry2_0\CoreLibs\NiDX9RendereNiDXRenderedTextureData.cpp, Line:167". I can't find the file.

Everything worked just fine with 1.09.

I can't even uninstall the patch. I guess I'll have to completely uninstall Civ4, reinstall, and repatch to 1.09. Every patch should have an uninstall option.

Thanks for the fixes! It is much appreciated. I just wish you could have released this before I came home for the holidays so it wouldn't take 5 hours to download ;) Regardless, I'm very interested to see the changes made to the gameplay, it seems as if combat strategies will have to change quite a bit.

Did you try restarting? Whenever that happens to me (from other games, not this), I just restart and it works again.

DOes this really help out with systems that are under minimum specs? Or do you still need at least minimum specs to actually play..and not just admire the pretty picture?

Of course I tried restarting! :) I'm not quite that computer-illiterate. A couple times. Since I got the "1706: No valid source code could be found for product Sid Meier's Civilization 4. The Windows Installer cannot continue." thing during the patch installation, though, I think something bigger is going on.

This is on a laptop, but the 1.09 version ran like a dream, so I doubt that's too much of an issue.

You should be able to click past that message and continue.
Can you get to the options screen and lower your graphics settings?
Did the installation download succesfully?

@Arathorn: Notice that installing patch resets all the game options to default (meaning high graphics settings) .. if you playeyed at a lower setting before you may have to lower it again. (I got same error on my laptop when I tried to load a large map, and setting the graphics to low fixed it).

I loaded the patch.

Blue Marble was still on the intro screen but the terrain was vanilla.

I redownloaded and reinstalled Blue Marble. But terrain still vanilla.

Any ideas? Am I now messed up for trying?

I've got an old 866 mhz and I play it just fine...

Yes, I can click past that and continue.

I did not try lowering my graphics settings. Maybe I should do that. "High" worked fine on 1.09, but.... I'll test and report back.

The installation did download successfully, yes.

I actually went ahead and tested before posting. Lowering my graphics to "Low" solved the problem. I can now at least play.

Thanks for the help!

I think ColdFever needs to update it with each new patch release.

BTW I just installed the patch. No errors. :)

Hey thamer, do you know (I was at 34% with dial-up when my aol crashed) a way to restart the downloading process within the game from where it ended earlier or is that an impossibility?

@ Thuderfall did you get the message I sent you?

Nevermind this message.
