Well first of all its not Ice Hockey. Its Hockey. You don't call Baseball Field Baseball.

Hockey is hockey. Ice hockey is not hockey, because calling two sports the exact same thing is stupid. It's hockey and ice hockey, not hockey and field hockey.

Ha! You Australians make me laugh. And I don't even like hockey of either kind!

You guys realise that it's the winter olympics, not the ice hockey world cup, right?

Olympic hockey tournament is to hockey what the World Cup is to football/soccer. World championships happen every year, but the Olympic tournament only happens every four.

Ice Hockey is usually just hockey in Canada. To us, its a sport played on ice. Field hockey is the field version.

American Football really does need to be called something different, for many reasons and to be more accurate (they don't kick the ball all that much, mostly carrying and throwing it). But i don't ever see a name being agreed upon.

Ice Hockey and Hockey are both acceptable. Hockey by itself is taken to mean ice hockey, rather than field/street/roller.

Is it our fault that nobody seems to write about other sports happening?

This. Also, the NHL doesn't pause for the WC, which means a lot of top players missing from the WC. The Olympic hockey tournament really is the highest international meeting of hockey teams.

Oh, and to please azzaman: Mike Schmid won the fifth gold for Switzerland in Ski Cross. I have it say it's an ... interesting sport :ack:

Well, I do. I value the Swiss team higher than Latvia.
good for you ;)

But then imagine some team a bit better than Luxembourg and the Swiss. And to be honest, it's much easier to take a loss against Italy than a lost against Switzerland for us. I'm sure you understand. Whether it is an embaressment depends on the way of the loss. The last few decades we have shown that we are close to the best of the world, with both positive and negative exceptions. But we will never be able to be the equal of Brazil or Italy structurally. That's why a loss against Switzerland cannot automatically be an embaressment. For Brazil to lose against Switzerland, however, would be considered an embaressment in Brazil. No matter what.
fair enough, but then Brazil pretty much is to football what Canada is to Hockey. They're both equally crazy and are embarassed whenever the lose, or so it seems.

Can we stop with the childish discussion on the name of the sport? Ice hockey or hockey, does it really matter? It's the same sport, just called by a different name in different parts of the world. The same with football and soccer. Does that really matter?

Back on topic (i.e. olympic sports):
3rd gold for the Netherlands! Ireen Wust wins the 1500 meter speedskate. Nice! :)

But...but...but... soccer sounds so... feminine.

Anyway, we had two really great surprises here in Holland. I was hoping for three gold in ice skating, but counted on two of them to come from the 10.000m for men and the chase thingy for men. I had not counted with gold medals of either Tuitert or Wüst. So I guess I can at least hope on a fourth medal on the 10km..:D

I knew that Boarder Cross wa sa really cool sport to watch and despite what it seems there's less luck involved than it would seem for someone watching for the first time.

But watching Ski Cross yesterday just blew me away. I was expecting something less cool than with the Snowboards, but it was about equal in awesomeness ;-)

Seriously, I can't understand how in the sports report in TV they prefer to show something equestrian to this!

If the Czech hockey team doesn't improve it's strategy soon, we're gonna screw this one up just like most recent tournaments.

It's always the same - our players keep passing the puck from one to another, wasting time, only shooting from weird angles with too much distance between them and the cage, and when they finally try something there is no one waiting near the cage to score from rebounds. PATHETIC.

This might have worked when our team was full of very talented and technically skilled players, but those times are over. It's about time we realized that, goddamit :shake: We need to play a more straightforward hockey - combine less, shoot more.

/rant :mischief: At least Canada lost to the US so they can't sneer and jeer :D

That depends on where in the world you are. In Canada (and I'd assume the US too), ice hockey is simply called hockey and field hockey is called field hockey. There's also road/street hockey, roller hockey, and ball/floor hockey. Field hockey is probably the least known of the bunch in Canada.

That was a great skate by Wust. Christina Groves couldn't quite keep her pace up to steal gold (ended up with silver).

The snowboard cross was great! I wasn't sure how the ski cross would be, with all the extra bits of equipment. As I'd suspected, there was a fair bit more carnage in the ski cross, with skis and poles getting tangled up.

It's definitely exciting to watch though, both the snowboard and ski cross. Women's ski cross goes tomorrow. I'll have to be sure to set up my PVR to catch all of that as I'll be at the Switzerland vs Belarus hockey game.

I'm a bit disappointed I won't get to see the US in that game (and ticket prices have dropped now as a result), but it might end up being the most competitive of the qualification round games so it should still be a lot of fun. On the bright (???) side, I'll get to be in Vancouver during a team Canada game...

Again, I was just saying that Embarrasing is a really strong word which makes you look condescending. And you didn't answer: IF a 3-2 overtime victory for Canada is embarrasing, what the hell do you call the 2-0 Loss at the Torino Olympics?

Don't take it the wrong way. Imagine if Brazil tied to Switzerland at home, in a major tournament. Same kinda thing :)

Yes, 2nd gold for Amman this olympics which makes him the only ski jumper to attain both gold medals in two different olympics (Salt Lake, Vancouver). Yeah!

Man, Amman was so amazing.. leaps and bounds above the rest of the competition! I was cheering for Malysz the whole time (obviously), but Amman's jumps were just.. so.. incredible. No shame in losing to him at all.

In fact, I did see Malysz cheering after Amman jumped. Are they friends? Or is Malysz just a really classy guy? I also saw the Polish coach congratulating the Finnish coach right after Amman jumped.. Where else would you see that in the entire olympics from a losing coach/athlete?

Honestly, the Canadians should be embarrassed of this...

American Football really does need to be called something different, for many reasons and to be more accurate (they don't kick the ball all that much, mostly carrying and throwing it). But i don't ever see a name being agreed upon.

The name "football" didn't originate because games called football were played with the feet (ie. ball kicked with foot), they were called football because they were played on foot, by the commoners, while the upper class played games on horseback.

And yes, believe it or not, soccer and american football trace their ancestry to the same sport. (as do gaelic football, aussie rules, rugby, etc.)

As for hockey vs ice hockey, you'll notice that every official site will call the sport "ice hockey". We shorten that to 'hockey' here in Canada cause the other type of hockey isn't very popular. There' no need to get annoyed when people use the other term, especially if everyone knows what we're talking about.

I don't know why everyone in Canada is so down over yesterday's result.

Now, instead of denying the Russians the gold, we can deny them a medal entirely.

Any true Canadian hockey fan can appreciate the beauty in that.

...as I'll be at the Switzerland vs Belarus hockey game.

probably both :)

why would he congratulate the Finnish coach?

Unfortunately not all officials are as graceful at losing as the polish coach...thinking of the fuss some silly austrian offical made over Amman's binding....Good thing is, that the actual austrian jumpers took it with much more grace :goodjob:

That would certainly be awesome.

The extra game gives Canada a bit more time to learn how to play together; if they can't figure it out by the end of this game, then, as much as it pains me to say it, they don't deserve a medal. It also gives Luongo a game to 'warm up' and get into game mode before going up against the Russians. (a couple sites are reporting confirmation of Luongo starting tomorrow)
