2012 US Election Night Thread

Probably the same 45% in favor it always is. They seriously need to vote themselves into the Union. It's been 114 years, Puerto Rico, pick a side! We are at war!
IIRC, they don't have a status quo option this year. It's either statehood or nothing this year so it won't be the same as it always is.

Hmm. Interesting! And how does it work exactly? Those a law requires to be passed at both chambers to be accepted?

For instance, how did Obama do to get the Obamacare reform being passed? Sorry to ask that question but I'm not really familiar with your legislative system.
I don't really know if there is voting discipline in France, but that is more or less nonexistant in the US, AFAIK.

That's right, both chambers must pass a similar bill and there's a reconciliation process to fix the little differences between the two. The Senate has 2 members per state, the House is nominally proportional but is actually too small to meet that requirement.

The Democrats controlled the House and Senate when it was passed, but in the midterm elections (2010, where 1/3 of Senate is elected, and all house seats elected Republicans gained control of house and decreased Democratic majority in Senate)

Yes it takes both houses. In the house, you need a majority. In the senate you need a supermajority (60/100).

He got obamacare w/ 59 (iirc) senate voted by using a special loophole

*hasn't read the thread, only peaked at the results so far*

Looks like Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida are going blue, Obama's won it.

Early leads, I don't think anyone is calling it yet.

CNN is calling the Florida Senate election for the Democrats.

Did u see what I said about the Puerto Rico election and no status quo option.

They better become the 51st state or else invasion time

Okay... so if the Reps would want to make the President unable to pass any law, they just could by blocking the House of Representatives.

Do they do so? For the budget for instance, is Obama forced to do what the Republicans want or do they all work together in some kind of consensus?

Sorry to ask this but here in France, when the President doesn't have the majority at the National Assembly, he's forced to nominate a government against him (and he basically become powerless, a bit like the Queen of England).

Yes they can and do, both in the house and ecen the senate due to the supermajority requirement.

That's why our gov has been so disfunctional

Of course one of the most politically corrupt states we have would go for Obama.

That shot was so cheap you must have gotten it from Wal-Mart's with coupons. :p

Hmm...I guess you didn't see what I do when I click it. When I click, there seems to be a glitch that's saying 50% is going to "Others".

Are you getting preemptively angsty?

Saw that, was trying to look it up. I'm heading out to meet up with some friends to watch the results, won't be back until later.

Wait, Puerto Rico could get statehood? Like, right now? What are the odds?

Please Obama, do not win NC... Just don't. You can have the election, just make it close...

Romney seems to be winning the pop vote right now, if Romney pulls a Gore and wins the pop vote while losing the EVs I am going to

I wish I could vote for your avie for president. It's one of the coolest on cfc.

Mad jealousy.

Thanks mang, my face looks like the one in your avvie right now :)
