2013 NCAA Football Thread

So the remarkable happened today. I didn't even realize that a school could actually hire Bobby Petrino intentionally like Louisville did today. I assume all of his previous hirings have been the employers misreading "Bobby Petrino" as "Rick Pitino."

Hey, Petrino's a great coach, great offensive mind. His off-field crap from Arkansas is the only reason he's not hotter, and that actually offsets his main flaw prior to Arkansas -- his nomadic nature. Maybe Louisville can hang on to him this time . . .

BTW, I encourage everyone to note that Nussmeier is leaving for Michigan immediately after early enrollees OT Cameron Robinson, QB David Cornwell and WR Cameron Sims attended their first classes at UA this week. So if any of them wanted to transfer in the wake of his departure, they'd lose a year of eligibility. Not that they would necessarily want to, I'm just pointing out yet another inequity in case anyone hasn't been keeping up . . .

Better than leaving Feb 6th I guess :dunno:

I wouldn't be shocked if Kyle Allen started as a freshman. He's not mobile though, so A&M would need to change a lot of their offense.

Kenny Hill was also a highly sought out recruit here in Texas. I expect either Kenny or Kyle to start. I really doubt that Matt Joeckel will win the starting job if he returns. (he is graduating this spring even though he technically has one year of eligibility left).

I am stoked about Speedy Noil and Miles Garrett. Miles Garrett i see starting as a true freshman, we really need that kind of pass rusher. We sorely missed Demontre Moore when he decided to go pro early. It kills me to see him block kicks for the Giants.

Is Alabama ready for the post-AJ era?

His mom does not deserve the criticism and name calling after calling out Jameis Winston for his deplorable English grammar. How did he get a high enough SAT to get into Florida State? Is he a math wiz to overcome a low English score? Or are FSU's admission standards that low? For goodness sake foreign athletes in MLS, MLB and the NBA speak better English...

No, McCarron's mom deserved everything she got. Jameis is excited after winning the National Championship, SEC fans were butthurt about it and decided to mock him for his english when there were perfectly good rape jokes to make instead.

Just because he was being recruited, doesn't mean that he was qualified to be a student at Stanford. Texas A&M had their share of recruiting prospects that did not have the grades to get in. Case in point TE Derrick Griffin (a two sport prospect might I add), who committed to Miami int he 2012-2013 recruiting cycle. He was the #1 TE (H) in the class and did not have the grades to get into Texas A&M. Sumlin offered him to go JUCO for a year to get his grades up and then head down to College Station, but Miami attempted to squeeze him through their admissions process. Needless to say, he did not make it onto the Hurricane's roster. Football, basketball or classroom rosters.

I have no idea what has happened to him since.

Is Alabama ready for the post-AJ era?
No, it's going to be a down year. Two, maybe three losses in the regular season. And we didn't just lose AJ we lost Mosley too, who was indispensable vs. mobile QBs. Nussmeier to Michigan, Steele to Louisville, C. Kouandjio, Hubbard, Clinton-Dix and Pagan all to the draft early . . .

Anyway, slow news day. All that for Alabama, plus UAB's HC to Louisville, Franklin to Penn State, Tre Mason gone to the NFL from Auburn. I feel like I'm still forgetting some stuff . . .

No, he's an HR nightmare. Forget the off the field crap at Arkansas, his departure from the Atlanta Falcons and Louisville the first time are enough to raise serious flags about his character. Having a mistress wasn't really an issue (lots of coaches do), but lying to your AD, and potentially breaking Arkansas state law with nepotism? Bad form.

Louisville could have hired an equally talented coach who isn't as much of a risk.

I can confirm that Winston got into Stanford. The Cardinal do not recruit players who are marginal academic candidates anyway...if he's on their radar, the dude has at least a 27 on his ACT.

(but yeah, FSU's admission standards aren't very high)

Having watched Winston's interview, yes, that's English. Not everyone speaks English in the same dialect as white Americans.

I really don't understand. Why on earth hire that guy??? When has he not been a giant turd of a person? Dang, I am completely shocked.

As far as Winston... he may have just been fooling around some too :mischief: .

Steele is staying at Alabama, not accepting the Louisville DC job . . .

Michigan has denied that it will be paying Nussmeier "top 5" money . . .

The NCAA may loosen conference title game rules. The SEC has been divisionless in basketball for a while now, but I'm not sure that would work in football with so many fewer conference games. Still, it would solve some of our scheduling problems with UT/Alabama and Auburn/Georgia . . .

And it's officially official. Lane Kiffin is Alabama's OC. It may be as good a place as any to rehabilitate his image. The media was given access to Nussmeier four times over the two years he was here. Kiffin's first media availability will come this August . . .

Alabama D-line coach Chris Rumph to Texas. Will this madness never end ! ? !

I hear Oregeron's not doing anything right now. He can recruit and he's been a head coach, two Saban staff earmarks . . .

Yeah, I think Ohio State might take a swing at Oregeron as well. It's worth noting that he has a fairly substantial NCAA rap sheet, which might scare both OSU and Bama away from him.

Yeah, I'd be really surprised if we actually hired him. Maybe more surprised than I was when we hired Kiffin, who isn't exactly NCAA-clean either. With Grantham going to Louisville from Georgia they'll make a big push for Smart -- who is slated to make $1.35 million at Alabama this year -- so we may need to replace DC as well as D-line coach . . .

Vinnie Sunseri has apparently declared for the draft. This is surprising first because he didn't announce at Alabama's draft press conference and second because he probably didn't receive a great draft grade. He may just be afraid to risk another injury in his final year of eligibility, or maybe with our depth at safety he's afraid his last year may not have held a lot of starts for him. But he's a great special teamer and his intelligence allows him to play a lot faster than he is, so we'll definitely miss him . . .

Bo Davis is Alabama's new D-line coach. This after being USC's D-line coach for a week, after being Texas' D-line coach last season, after being Alabama's D-line coach before that . . .

EDIT: Rewatching the BCS Title. Somehow that war chant makes FSU a more worthy opponent . . .

What a shame. Universities and Athletic Programs across the country should be ashamed. It's beyond the level of what ARod and the gang are doing to baseball.

Solution: Do what Latin America and Ireland did, make your teams professional teams. Their teams in some instances are the most successful teams in the league, i.e. Chile and Mexico.

Here is a list of teams I am aware of in the top tier division, does not include those teams in lower divisions, which are too many to list:
Mexico:
1) Club de Fútbol Tigres de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (Football Club Tigers of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León)
2) Los Pumas del Club de Fútbol Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (The Pumas of the Football Club of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Ireland:
1) University College Dublin Association Football Club (UCD) They even give scholarships to their players on top of their wages, and are highly regarded.

Chile:
1) Universidad de Concepción
2) Universidad Católica (Catholic University won the league title last December)
3) Universidad de Chile (University of Chile)

Ecuador:
1) Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito (Sporting League of the University of Quito)
2) Club Deportivo Universidad Católica del Ecuador (Catholic University of Ecuador Sporting Club)
3) Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Loja (Sporting League of the University of Loja)

Peru:
1) Club Universitario de Deportes "La U" (Club University of Sports "The U")
2) Universidad Técnica de Cajamarca (Technical University of Cajamarca aka "Cajamarca Tech"?
3) Universidad San Martín (St. Martin University)
4) Club Deportivo Universidad César Vallejo (Cesar Vallejo University Sporting Club)

Bolivia:
1)Club Deportivo Universitario San Francisco Xavier (St. Francis Xavier University Sporting Club)

Venezuela:
1) Estudiantes de Mérida Fútbol Club (Merida Students Football Club)

There may be others in other countries, but this is what I could conjure up on a moment's notice. Been wanting to point this out for a while now.
