2013 NCAA Football Thread

Well that was less than impressive. I'm no longer considering Houston/UCF an interesting game. It's more on the FSU/Miami level now. They just had me believing too . . .

That game was uh....... something I guess. Wow

Two weeks ago, Mike London claimed he was the "right man for the job": http://hamptonroads.com/2013/10/uva-report-london-sees-himself-teams-future

Last week, Mike London told the media to go screw themselves after the hilarious debacle against Georgia Tech: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/mike-london-addresses-game-management-blunder-after-cavs-loss-to-georgia-tech/2013/10/28/c3970310-3fd1-11e3-a751-f032898f2dbc_story.html

I presume after tonight's disaster against Clemson, the corpse of Thomas Jefferson appeared dressed in the grim reaper outfit, complete with scythe, standing behind Mike London during the press conference.

Eh, it's Virginia, they can only expect so much :mischief:

So many teams were off this week, I really don't have much of an impression to make a top 25 out of. But I'm going to do it anyway :D

There weren't any real upsets this week. Michigan and TT fell from the ranks of the once beaten, and Miami picked up its first loss vs FSU.

1. Alabama -- No one's been arrested yet AFAIK, so I guess we won the off week. We've got LSU this week and Auburn on the 30th. Auburn's been doing us some favors with the way they've been playing so far. If they can keep it up through Georgia, they could be the highest-ranked team we play all year . . .
2. Oregon -- Off week before the Stanford game on Thursday. Thursday's got some pretty good football scheduled this week in case you haven't noticed.
3. Florida State -- Took longer than they should have to put Miami out of reach. Shaky Miami defense gave Winston more trouble than it should have. I'd hate/love to see what Saban & Smart would do to him with a month to prepare . . .
4. Ohio State -- Continued the pace they set for themselves last week vs. Penn State in a dominating shutout win of Purdue. OTOH, Purdue's not quite Penn State. Michigan State beating Michigan has taken a little of the shine off of that game for Ohio State, and neither of their other remaining opponents has a winning record.
5. Stanford -- Off week to prepare for Oregon on Thursday.
6. Clemson -- Crushed Virginia as they should have. I'm still pulling for Clemson. I'm hoping they can finish the season with just the one loss. The South Carolina game should be very watchable . . .
7. Baylor -- The off week gives us a good chance to recap Baylor's season. On the plus side, they've absolutely blown away everyone they've played except KState, and despite giving their opponents all those possessions, have only allowed WVU to capitalize. On the downside, they played no AQ teams OOC and they have yet to play a Big XII team that has managed a winning record either overall or in conference play through week ten. Oklahoma's up next on Thursday night.
8. Auburn -- Actually struggled more than I expected them to at Arkansas, but that's relative. They should be able to handle Tennessee pretty easily unless they're looking ahead to that Georgia game, which could be deadly. Now that Georgia has Gurley back I'm not sure about Auburn's chances, but I'll be pulling for them, as any good Alabama fan should . . .
9. Missouri -- Beat Tennessee like a team that's playing for an SEC Title berth should . . .
10. Oklahoma -- Off week. Will do the world a favor by finally testing Baylor this Thursday on FOX Sports 1. That was fun to type . . .
11. Michigan State -- I suddenly love Michigan State. They got rid of a one-loss team for me, and now maybe they'll get to play Ohio State. They've got to beat the two teams right behind them in the division to make that happen, and they've also got Northwestern, who somehow went from ranked in the top twenty to 0-5 in the Big Ten. Go figure . . .
12. Miami -- They played better than I expected them to, and so I'm giving them a little credit here. I'm not giving them much of a shot in the ACC title game though . . .
13. Oklahoma State -- Beat TT to start to sort out the Big XII for us outsiders, but they've still got that WVU loss hanging around their necks. After Kansas this week they close the season with Texas, Baylor and Oklahoma. Best of luck . . .
14. UCF -- Off week. The AAC doesn't have a conference title game, so UCF's last chance to impress would be by dominating Houston this weekend. It's a real loss for us CFB fans that we didn't get to see more of them vs. quality opponents. Maybe they'll get a good bowl matchup. Who does the AAC champ play . . ?
15. Northern Illinois -- Crushed hapless UMass, get this weekend off before the MAC West showdown with Ball State!!!
16. Fresno State -- A lot of close calls vs. fair to middling opponents, but they have won them all. The Black Friday showdown with SJSU should decide the division . . .
17. Louisville -- Disappointing season for Louisville, but it was kind of unavoidable. They get UConn Friday night, so they'll have an extra day to prepare for Houston.
18. Houston -- They had me convinced when they bounced back against Rutgers, but they looked pretty awful vs. USF. UCF will remove them from this list on Saturday.
19. Ball State -- Why do I have to talk about Ball State in week ten? Why? Okay, they've got some close wins and they lost to North Texas. Maybe North Texas isn't as bad as they used to be, but they're still North Texas. Ball State will play NIU on the 13th.

When will the FBS and NCAA realize this is not something people want to see week after week :(

:dunno: It's just not a relevant question. The teams must have breaks, but the athletic departments and college towns can't afford actual off weeks. So we get these almost-off weeks. The only way to get rid of them is to shorten the season, and that's not going to happen . . .

EDIT: Ten weeks in, I decided it's worth looking at some resumes instead of just going off the eyeball test. This is a list of all the unbeaten and one-loss teams, with the records of the teams that beat them and the FBS teams with winning records that they have beaten. I didn't include wins over FCS schools or FBS schools with losing records, because you expect an undefeated or one-loss team this deep in the season to have won all those anyway. The list isn't ranked, it's just food for thought. Some interesting stuff here . . :

Oklahoma State -- lost to WVU (4-5, 2-4 Big XII), beat TT (7-2, 4-2 Big XII)

And on a completely unrelated note, Navy has indeed won the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy again this year, by virtue of Air Force beating Army yesterday - thus making the outcome of the Army-Navy game irrelevant. :woohoo:

Of course, this only lessens the significance and hype of the actual Army-Navy game by about .07%, and doesn't take the sting out of Navy nearly beating Notre Dame (yes moral victories and all that), the week after ND crushed Air Force.

Navy nearly beating Notre Dame

As that game wound down the only thing I thought about was the fact that we could possibly have a relevant Navy post in this thread, but it wasn't to be . . .

And I forgot to mention this week's games of import last night. I was tired :dunno:

Thursday
Oklahoma/Baylor -- The U has Troy/La-Lafayette if this one gets boring . . .
Oregon/Stanford -- Game of the week two days early :D

Saturday
Houston/UCF -- I don't think it will be close, but it will be fun to be right . . .
Alabama/LSU -- Maybe this is just the Alabama fan talking, but I'm not sure LSU is really that much of a threat . . .

Other than that there's not much going this week. Most of the games should either be pretty lopsided or just uninteresting. Auburn/Tennessee? Nebraska/Michigan? BYU/Wisconsin? Nothing's really jumping out at me . . .

Notre Dame was really lucky to escape with a win there, they really got outplayed in a bunch of areas.

When will the FBS and NCAA realize this is not something people want to see week after week :(
To be fair, that was a conference game. UMass, in retrospect, probably shouldn't have been promoted to FBS though.

4. Ohio State -- Continued the pace they set for themselves last week vs. Penn State in a dominating shutout win of Purdue. OTOH, Purdue's not quite Penn State. I don't worry about that too much. Ohio State will still have to play Michigan State in the B1G title game. It's moot though...nothing can happen in the B1G that will allow OSU to jump anybody unless they lose.

I think BYU/Wisconsin should be a good game (BYU would be #27 or #28 in the polls). Kansas State and Texas Tech isn't terrible. *I* think Michigan/Nebraska could be interesting. Utah might need to beat Arizona State to make sure it goes to a bowl.

All three of the 'big' games this week feature double-digit betting lines . . .
never too late to become a soccer fan

hell even the scores would be familiar to an SEC fan

I am a soccer fan . . .

Scoring is actually way up in the SEC this year. Four of the top fifteen scoring offenses are from the SEC, and two of them face off this Saturday in Tuscaloosa . . .

Neither team has had a double-digit win in this series in the regular season since 2008 . . .

EDIT: Fun with numbers. No other conference has more than two scoring offenses in the top fifteen, though two others -- the Pac-12 and Big Ten -- have two in the top ten, as the SEC does. The top five come from five different conferences -- The big five, coincidentally . . .

Damn, I don't know what's more incredible - that Stanford won tonight, or that Oregon nearly managed to turn that into a win in the last five minutes.

I know. I stopped watching at 26-7 and missed all the good stuff . . .

So is it now Alabama/FSU if everyone wins out, or does someone else have a chance to claw their way past FSU? Baylor's got a lot of ranked teams on the schedule, but no conference title game and a lot of ground to make up. Ohio State is closest, but doesn't have much left on their schedule . . .

Yes... it would have been a shame if Stanford lost IMO.

I was wincing on that onside kick with like 2 minutes left.

This Oregon Stanford game became a high risk high reward game for Mariota. Comeback win = Heisman Moment, failure = you're on the fringes and we are looking at a freshman frontrunner.

He was probably thinking more about staying in the national title hunt than the Heisman race. At least I hope he was . . .
