2013 NCAA Football Thread

Alabama has requested and sold an additional 2,000 tickets over its allotment for the Sugar. So at least the fans aren't experiencing a Utahesque letdown . . .

And with that Baylor and Central Florida wince. <<don't show the stands on TV>>

I doubt Alabama fans would have shown up to watch UCF either. Oklahoma's out of their depth, but at least they have the name . . .

There is a legitimate movement among BYU fans to fire Bronco Mendenhall after another 8-5 season. In other news, many BYU fans are dumb.

There's a legitimate movement among UM fans to fire Brady Hoke after getting progressively worse since he's been coach. I guess at least Rich Rodriguez improved every year.

Firing Brady Hoke after this season would be dumb, given his recruiting classes and the fact that Michigan wouldn't be able to sign a more attractive coach this year. They probably should have fired Al Borges though.

If Michigan doesn't win 9 games NEXT year (and they have a harder schedule), then the program does have some really hard decisions to make.

And Ole Miss gets us off to a good start . . .

EDIT: You know how I'm always saying I suck at pick 'em? I was 5-10 through the first fifteen bowl games. And that's just to win, not ATS . . .

Nice showing from the Big Ten today. They only went 2-2 but they didn't get blown out anywhere, and both wins were upsets . . .

Too bad that with all the injuries to their defense, Clemson is almost certainly going to beat Ohio State. A pity the Bucks couldn't catch them when they're healthy.

Never underestimate the ability of Clemson to pull a Clemson . . .

Bowl season in general has reminded us once again that bowl results typically reflect more which team wanted to be there than which team was actually better . . .

Yes, things like "you gotta want it!" matter more than sheer randomness, context-specific play, and preparation time.

I was very impressed with them when I watched them lose to SCAR, and the Louisville win was nice too. But they won four of their last six games by five points or less, and only one of those four teams finished above .500. The other three combined for a total of nine wins all year. I think it's fair to say UCF was unimpressive down the stretch. OTOH, they are from a 'have not' conference and they just beat the Big XII champ . . .

Compare TT which started off strong with seven wins over teams that would all finish with losing or even records, but followed that up by losing five straight to every eventual bowl team on their schedule. Then they came back and beat a team that had lost only three times -- twice to Stanford and once to the officials in the Wisconsin game . . .

I'm giving the edge to UCF just because it was a bigger game, but TT's achievement shouldn't be overlooked . . .

EDIT:
expect to see oklahoma to blow alabama out of the water
The potential is there, but everything we've heard from Alabama's players since November 30th indicates they know they didn't play well and are looking for redemption. Meanwhile, Oklahoma has a team in disarray with a coach that sounds like he's trying to prepare his fanbase for a letdown . . .

Frustrating, isn't it . . ?

Though when you consider that 'wanting it' means making your own luck, putting in the time for film study and focusing on that preparation it becomes a little less of a dichotomy

Those both seem like solid bets. Of course, so much so far hasn't really followed the script . . .

EDIT: 17-14 less than sixteen minutes in. Just the defensive struggle I would have predicted . . .

FUN FACT! Both of Alabama's first two special teams tackles were by former five-star running backs . . .

Third one was by the kicker :/

Every entry in both of the bowl pick 'ems I entered has Alabama for at least thirty . . .

Oh, look, we fumbled in the red zone, AGAIN!

Down 14 and Oklahoma gets the ball first in the second half. Three turnovers are a killer. OTOH, we're not really playing that badly, so we'll see . . .

Different defense for Alabama here in the 2nd half. Oklahoma with three straight punts after not having to punt at all in the first half. The only first down Oklahoma has so far this half has been by a pass-interference penalty on Alabama . . .

McCarron is now Alabama's all-time leading passer . . .

Four straight punts. Alabama certainly owned that quarter, but we only got seven points out of it. Still trailing by seven . . .

D'oh! Gave up 34 on a 3rd and 15 . . .

Six sacks. That's the most we've given up since . . . Western Kentucky last year :p

Derrick Henry is an above average football player . . .

I don't really like the way this has gone though. Three turnovers may just be too much to overcome . . .

Another big third down conversion for Oklahoma . . .

Not looking too good . . .

And that pass interference will do it . . .

Other than the turnovers, we really didn't play that badly. Oklahoma just played really well . . .

The Big XII has certainly been the most schizophrenic conference of the bowl season . . .

We fall to 1-3-1 all time vs. Oklahoma. Only four other teams have better all-time records vs. Alabama . . .

Watch the fake :mischief:

Hey, a fumble returned for a TD. That's just like the last time we lost to Oklahoma . . .

Look! Another turnover! That's an appropriate finish . . .
