2K Gregs game Comment thread

What didn't make sense to me is. If Greg's trebuchets had a range of 2? And Nappy's arty had a range of 3, why didn't nappy just move his arty up to provide covering fire? Greg would have had to either charge in to try to make it to the arty (allowing nappy to move his units up to kill) or taken arty fire and been forced to retreat.

Instead Nappy left it on the hill.

Also does being on a hill extend range?

Assuming that artillery does not have "indirect fire" then while it can shoot 3 it can only see 2 unless it is on a hill or firing onto a hill.

Makes American artillery quite powerful since they will be able to see 3 by default.

I do recall hearing Greg mention that artillery does have indirect fire as an ability in which case the AI was just being thick by not moving it closer. Though, in fairness, at the time the artillery appeared on the battlefield the rifles where pretty much gone and there were no units, at that point, near Suez or even in the peninsula (probably 'cause they were out destroying Siam). The units in the area were more for harrassment than anything else.

I saw when Greg destroyed the barbarian encampment, and received the barbarian brute unit, but wasn't able to watch any longer.

Was the barbarian unit upgrade-able? I heard Garrett (anyone else see an awesome resemblance to "the Dude"?) say he was unsure about it.

I would sure hope so.... since they were wrong about them being weaker than the Warrior... they are both 6. Otherwise Germany's ability is definitely underpowered.

I have seen machine gun wielding barbs so it's not like the brute is the only barb unit you'll be able to take, and having an extra unit to explore with in the early game never hurts. The extra gold is probably the better part of the deal, though.

Germany's special ability is ideal for the Orc civ in the fantasy mod that I'm going to make :)

What difficulty should come after Deity? Let's brainstorm in anticipation.

Well, Seeing how a Deity is the most powerful thing imaginable, the only thing stronger than it would logically be inconceivable. So Inconceivable could be a difficulty level. :p

I'm sorry but the answer is obvious. The only correct answer is 'Sid'.

(And yes, I know that idea is not original)

Sorry Afforess. :p

or the "Chuck Norris" level; all AIs start with a great general and an extra warrior in addition to Diety bonuses.

Edit: the General is Sid; the warrior is Chuck

Nappy had only just discovered (or upgraded) to artilllery in the latter part of the demo (Greg comments on this harsh turn of events), and seemed to be lacking units on the ground for a turn or two to protect the arty he kept on the hill. Nappy also seemed to be fighting on multiple fronts and doing a pretty good job of it. Around the same time Greg obtained Monaco as an ally and Nappy got distracted for a few turns slaughtering Monaco's pikemen slightly south of the choke point. Nappy might have decided that grabbing the poorly defended Monaco was a worthy diversion from Greg (Nappy also finally offers peace at roughly this time - at a ludicrous cost).

Instead Nappy left it on the hill.

I read somewhere recently that ranged can't fire thru terrain like forest or hill from flat ground, but can fire over it if on a hill themselves, but that wasn't the case here since the arty had all flat ground to hit.

Thru all this we also never know what Nappy's empire looks like - just a few tiles near the front. For all we know, Nappy was fighting just the other side of the fog and the arty could hit both sides.

The brute is weaker than the warrior in that there is an uncivilised penalty applied to barbarian units, although your captured "civilised" brute is no doubt just as good as a warrior.

This might be a dumb question, but why didn't they just make it a warrior unit? Does it not upgrade then? I assumed it did, but I guess not.

Deity<Chuck Norris<Sid

Why? Chuck Norris difficulty might give AI civs an extra great general and a warrior but on Sid level all opponent civs get a free chuck norris. This has not yet been confirmed by 2kGreg but it is rumored that on Chuck Norris difficulty there is a secret city state called Chuck N Orris Land which builds 1 UPT (unit per turn, not tile).

I would tend to agree. The only difference would be if you are on raging barbs and get a few good rolls to gather four or five barbs early on. At that point you could start considering a rush while picking up perhaps more troops on the way.

The Japanese UA is great for when I mod in the Klingons! Kaplah!

It should be INCONCEIVABLE!?! and when you click it it should play the sound byte from the movie.

See my quote. You dare call the Norris a mere warrior. He'd have to be a ninja. It would be a pyhrric victory though. The Chuck Norris unit is invisible to all units even the civ that controls him and is fully automated because nobody tells Chuck Norris what to do. Other than that it would make for an easy game since he has infinite move and can destroy every unit in the game with one strike.

On second thought... my sig is right. It would never work.

I'm up for that!

So we'd have Inconceivable, but it's somewhat conceivable since we can find an adjective for it. Then we'd have something so (...) that we can't even find words for it. We'll call it "that". It so happens that Sid is that, so there you have it.

Deity
Inconceivable
Sid

At the two new levels, Nappy would have just used his military-grade underground LHC to vaporize Greg's civilization out of the map. NO! Better yet, he would have evaporated the rivers and walked right over with his musketeers. Artillery, pfft.

I am frankly suprised that they also didn't jsut call it a warrior, but you know whatever. And im sure it can be upgraded, otherwise its a little redundant.
