2KGreg n' friends: Help me (us?) make a good preorder decision

I'm not interested in anything other than Steam or Direct2Drive because of the Babylon offer, so all comes down to how lame or how awesome the Mesopotamia map pack is.
Based on a choice between Steam and Direct2Drive, I'd go for the Direct2Drive offer myself. Two extra civilizations and a scenario sounds much more interesting than a map pack.

Me, I'm going the DVD route (regardless of whether it's single or dual later :mischief:), but for a download purchase, I wouldn't have to think long to go for D2D.

I'm going to get D2D myself, because I REALLY hope the civs are Spain/Mongolia.

I also note that my surname is accidentally mentioned in this thread. Which is cool.

Lazy question here (I could probably go look it up, but you guys just know stuff).

Are the bonuses listed in the first post only for preorders, or for any digital order of the Deluxe version?

If one of the new civs is Spain with Izzy, then I might cancel Amazon and order from D2D.

Cradle of Civilization maps are preorder exclusives (so far only available from Steam and Amazon from what I can tell, I'm surprised Gamestop didn't get one).
And so is D2D's offer of giving you the first DLC for free.

The DLC, however, will be available for anyone to purchase when it is released.

we likely won't know this information before release.

Personally I think the deal is great regardless. Buy the game with 18 civs, or buy it with an inevitable 20. Same price either way. If it saves me even $3, I think it's worth it regardless which civs they add. But I hope it's Spain and the Mongols.

This doesn't spending the extra 10 if you want Babylon, making it 21 civs.

Which, for me, makes D2D all that more appealing. I'm banking on the fact that "exclusive" means exclusive, and that Babylon will not be found or offered elsewhere (there's always Sumer or Assyria for Cradle-civs in expansions). So I'm spending the 10 bucks. So I'd like to be saving money somewhere. The civ-pack could be anywhere from 3 (doubtful) to $10 itself... if it's 10.. well, D2D deluxe version technically got me 3 civs for $10, rather than 3 civs for $20, or 2 civs for $10.

What interests me is if the DLC will be exclusive to itself, or if it'll be bundled with future expansions. If that's the case than other than the D2D deal, I'll never buy it. But that's a bet I'll need to make with myself, ala warlods for civ4; I assumed there would be another expansion, and I assumed it would come with all the previous content. I was right, and saved myself money while simply sticking with vanilla for longer.

Mercade, don't forget the civ3 complete that is thrown in with the D2D offer.
I know, I've got a whole thread about the different configurations and pre-order offers. ;) But for a Civ3 download has 0 value. Agreed that for others it may further tip the balance between Steam and D2D.

Babylon (+behind the scenes video + sound track) is always included with the Deluxe Edition, regardless of when you buy it. The Free DLC pack and Civ3 are pre-order bonusses, just as the illustrious map pack.

See also this post for a complete overview of all pre-order bonuses and packages. And this post for a list of all shops.

I'm getting slightly disappointed that Greg hasn't given us any official word on the matter.

He said he would address this very question (cradle) like two weeks ago.

Great information by the way, Mercade.

Actually through a hint from Bluetooth, I've re-evaluated the website of Webhallen.com and they have clear information on what the map packs entail (they now offer 3 instead of just 1!). The description is clearly that of a single map. It would take some imagination to stretch the description into a single scenario, but that's really the most optimistic view.

And Direct2Drive it is!

Thanks much.

EDIT: I think I see what's happening. The map PACK is Cradle of Civilization. And it consists of individual maps titled Americas, Mesopotamia, Asia, etc.

It really feels like it will be available as DLC as an entire "pack" sooner or later.
