3rd Annual CFC Chess Tourney!!

I wonder if there are any chess games either out or in development for the PS3?

I just won a game against Alpine Trooper on time.

I don't think he's around anymore, sadly. Is there a way to neutralize his tournament status?

I just lost to lovett a few minutes ago via RxR check. He's the Lord of the Rook in my books for that maneuver! Used both his bishops to ensure I couldn't use my king to kill off the rook! Masterful use of tactics, lovett! I bow to thy superior tactics!

Well, tournament is over for me - surrendered my last game just now to Narz :)

1 draw, 7 losses -> pretty depressing but I had good opponents I must say....

Yeah - I saw that Alpine was currently on the forums, and sent him a quick email reminding him of the tournament. He didn't respond, nor did he play a turn in the new game I'm in against him

gg Riffraff. And congrats to Yeekim & Sashie for continuing on to Round 2! :hatsoff:

I'll see you again next year! :hammer:

Going as fast as I can - I seem to be waiting for all my oppos at present. Frustrating - especially in the opening when the first 10 moves or so are routine.

I'm still waiting for loki130 and mowque to make a move. I do want to finish these games people. ;)

I got face stomped too, but I didn't play well.

Here is some in-game analysis from my last three games in the tourney (vs. Yeekim, Riffraff & Sashie). Note of my careful (though certainly flawed) analysis goes all the way to the endgame & I may have paid the price for that (lost to Sashie) - by the time my notes ended I was already losing however I did have winning chances once more before I blew it!

My life simply became too hectic to take detailed notes after a certain point but it was a great experience taking them when I did. Feel free to comment on my comments. :D

vs. Yeekim :
Spoiler :
Yeekim Game 2 analysis

I didn't do this type of careful analysis in game 1 vs. either Sashie or Yeekim & I paid the price. Why I waited until move 8 in game 2 vs. Y, I don't know.

But anywayz, I feel ok so far.

So Yek just played 8. e5 which I predicted would be his most likely reply... lets see... It seems Nf5 is now my best option with the idea of planting one of my knights firmly on d4. From there I will be better able to attack white's queenside than he will be able to attack my kingside. There is no rush to castle, white has no immediate threats. I don't see much need for a long think yet, Nf5 is the best move. 8. ..Nf5.

9. g4

Scary looking but I haven't castled yet & the knight wasn't exactlly planing on applying for perminant residency on that square. I think I can safely say that any move besides Nfd4 is horrible. I think I now have the advantage (albeit slight & potentially fleeting should I futz around and play passively), queenside pawns will storm & my kingside is pretty safe (for now). My white squared bishop is very bad but if I can ever get him to c6 he would be pretty good there.

This is a great position for learning, IMO. I tend to get myself into these types alot & I must say, very often, once there I blow it. That said, black's challenges are all solvable & I think I should be able to prevail should I be both very careful & very sharp/counterattacking. This is a fun one already. :) 9. ... Nfd4

10. Qe3

Qf2 seems better, the 1st thing I immediate noticed was forking potential on the d4 square. I'm very tempted to start a wild attack already but I think patience is in order, let me look.

Nxc2 just doesn't appear sound. I can't analyze all the lines but it seems even with 2nd best moves white is in no danger & black wastes his nicely placed knight.

Nb5 on the other hand looks good. From my lazy, hazy calculations I can see no refutation. Black wins a pawn (and a critical one) and there's nothing white can do about it. I don't think I will have any sort of mating attack but a pawns a pawn). If I can ever play b5 and b4 to shut out the bishop I'm set!

Hmm, wait a minute...

Alright, stop! (Huh?)

Now before you walk in the door of this liquor store

and try to get money out the drawer

You better think of the consequence

How about Qa5? ... hmm, no screw it, I'm going with the forcing line. :) 10. ... Nb4.

11. Nge2

Ok, I know (am learning) my limits. As badly as I want to move tonight I'm not going to. I'm just going to let it hang & think about it a bunch before I make my next move.

Ok, having slept on it I've decided the d-knight should be the one to do the honors (turkey really does make you tired but man, I shouldn't have had so much of it :ack: ). IMO, taking with this knight gives me a beter atatck and gives whit alot more chances to go wrong(er). White is in really deep trouble. Looks like, at the very least, I may be able to win another piece. This is all from my superficial, half-intuitive analysis but I just don't see alot of good moves for white here. Last night I was thinking about d4 and Qd5. What the heck was I thinking? Qa5 threating d4 seems much stronger. Like resignworthy strong. We'll see. I'm still going to be careful & not get cocky.

Obviously Qxc5 and Qc7 are out of the eqaution for white. 11. ... Ndxc2

12. Qf3

White played what looks to me to be the best move in a bad situation. I see no reason not to go ahead with my plan of Qa5. I see no way white can aviod a significant loss of material at best. 12. ... Qa5

13. b3

Hard to recommend a good move for white. I should check first so white can't play a4. 12. ... Qa6+

14. Kb1

Ah shoot, I forgot about Bc1...

I didn't sleep at all last night so now I have to reconsider everything.

Well, actually, shouldn't be that big a deal. I still win a piece it looks like.

Ok, finally got some good sleep last night. Still lots of drama with the momma (in-law) & uncertainty about my own life and of course the future of mankind's but I think it's safe to say 13. ... d4 is the best move. If Bc1 then Qa5 with no problems (a3 is not a probably, simply knight takes it & white is in a world of trouble all the same). 13. ... d4

15. Nc1

Hmm, I completely didn't consider this move for some reason. I guess I just assumed he vacated the square for the bishop, not the knight. I suppose the knight move is better, as it does defensive duty better than the bishop would at that square (the more of white's pieces defending the kingside, the better (for him).

Seems like the obvious pxN is the best, probably followed by Bd7 (threating Bc6). Black is holding all the cards.

16. Bxc3

Seems like Bd7 is just what the doctor ordered. The bishop will come to c6 with tempo. 15. ... Bd7

17. Bg2

White's gotta develop somehow. Now Bc6 for black is the best I'd say & then BxB and then castling (can't fork queen & rook right away because then white takes b7. 17. ... Bc6

18. Qf2

BxB seems like the best move. After QxB then Qa6 and black has a clean extra piece & good position. 18. ... BxB

19. QxB

I think Qa6 is the best move, defending the b-pawn and attacking white's d-pawn. If white plays Bb2 later I will have to do this anyway. Now I'm threating the knight-fork and to pile up on the backwards d-pawn. 19. .. Qa6

20. Qc2

Looks like it's finally time for castling. White can't take the pawn with his queen without losing his bishop and I just can't see a pawn-storm working in this situation. 20. ... 0-0

21. BxN

For some reason I didn't consider this. I guess white can win the pawn back afterall but I'm still not sure it will be worth it for him. 21. ... NxB

22. Qxc5

"wonder if I can wriggle my way out of this one as well :D" says dastardly Yeekim!

My knight is under attack and d5 looks to be the best square for him. My queenside attack didn't amount to anything but I did win a piece and unless I keep dropping pawns I should be ok. The c-file looks like a good place to double up rooks & Nc3 will be an annoying threat white will have to deal with the rest of his life! 22. ... Nd5

23. Qd4

Ok, I think I noticed some tactics baby! Finally a chance to look like I actually know how to play this game (after a series of lackluster games in this tournament!).

Here's my idea : 23 ... Rfc8 and if white responds naturally with Ne2 then ... Rc2!?! and white is in trouble (he must lose the knight or lose time hopping backwards)

If white plays something else, say 24. Rd2 I don't see any tactical goodness but then I can simply double the rooks (maybe knight-check first) with a dominate positional advantage (and an extra piece for one pawn).

24. Ne2

Muhahaha, just what I was hoping for! As far as I can tell I've won at least a knight under all circumstances unless white goes back to where he was & loses time.

vs. Riffraff
Spoiler :

Game vs. Riffraff

after 9 ... d6

10. exd6 seems best otherwise black can leave me with too isolated pawns with 0-0 next move.

10. ... Qxd6

Seems best, otherwise black loses time with the bishop. Castling now seems like the most practical choice. I like my position better since my bishops are better (though black may eventually be able to get in an e5 break) and black can no pieces defening his kingside (except king & rook).

11. ... 0-0

Debating between Ne4, a3 and Be3. Hard choice. Part of me thinks a3 is "objectively" best (forcing either BxN or the ugly Ba5) but I like Ne4, feels more active. Don't really want to place my bishop on e3 yet. I didn't get much sleep last night. Went to bed very late & family drama in the AM, filled out a job app, we'll see where that goes. Anywayz, I'm gonna go with Ne4 and see what happens. 12. Ne4

12. ... Qd8

Black's obvious & seemingly best move.

Bd2 seems the most logical to me right now, anywhere else the bishop goes it gets hassled, this clears the c-file for my rook & I don't mind if white trades. Give white some chances to go wrong. Not the most bombastic move on the planet but reasonable, I think. The game still seems roughly even.

13. ... a5

A suprising move & probably not a great one (weakens b pawn, creates holes on the b-file) but it's intent seems pretty clear. With the bishop protected black can now take the d-pawn with impunity. a3 might be an alright move but I think just taking & then developing another piece (one of the rooks probably) might be better. I'll have gained some time & black's position will be positionally worse. 14. BxB

14. ... pxB

I think Re1 is the best move (slightly better than Rc1. Putting pressure on the e6 pawn & developing another piece. Probably will bring the other rook out next. Eventually maybe develop a knight to b5 or maybe to g5. Can't force anything to happen yet. 15. ... Re1

15. ... Re8

Seems like a rational move. The the exception of 13. ... a5 I'd say Riff has played very well. Gotta go into NY in a few minutes, I'll have to come back to this game. :)

I play 16. Rc1. Couldn't see an immediate direct attack.

16. ... Nd5

I figured the knight would go there sooner or later. I think I'll play Qd3, threating black's kingside & ideally causing him to have to push some pawns promoting kingside weakness. 17. Qd3

17. ... f6

opening of his kingside a bit. looks like my knights aren't going to g5 so I'll plant one on c5 with some tactical treats in store if black doesn't play correctly. 18. Nc5

18. ... b6

I think it's time to strike. I may be missing something but it seems even in black's best case scenerio he loses a pawn for nothing. 19. Nxe6

19. ... Rxe6

I see nothing wrong with my plan of 20. Rxe6 Bxe6, 21. Rxc6 and I have an extra pawn & a good position with more opportunity for black to go wrong than white.

20. ... Bxe6

What else? I have to play RxN now or I'm down a piece. 21. RxN

vs. Sashie
Spoiler :

1. e4 c5

2. Nf3 g6

Usually I play Nc6 here but thought I'd try my luck with the hyper-accelerated dragon to aviod such annoying systems as the Rossalimo. (3. Bb5)

3. d4 cxd4

4. Qxd4 Nf6

Almost already I decide just to stick with the regular accelerated from now on!

5. Bc4

Already I'm out of the book (I actually have an accelerated dragon book but it only covers. 5. e5, 5. Bb5 and 5. Nc3) but that's probably for the best. I like figuring out everything on my own.

5. ... Nc6

Seems to make sense.

6. Qd3 Bg7

Gotta keep developing

7. Nc3 O-O

8. Bg5

At the moment this move doesn't worry me too terribly & I'm starting to feel pretty comfortable in the opening.

8. ... d6

a developing move with the idea of Bg4, BxN & then trading my knight for a bishop & attacking white's queen with my rook

9. a3 Bg4

10. O-O

Here, I briefly dabbled with Rc8 first, trying to see if I could get away with BxN QxB (or pxB) and then forking queen & bishop with a discovered attack on the biship. But IMO this would have been a bad move as white could just retreat the bishop & maintain the pressure on my kingside. Sashie's too good for me to try to get away with such a transparent & easily parried attack & playing such a way in general is poor form & poor practice.

10. . ... Bxf3

11. Qxf3 Ne5

12. Qe2 Nxc4

13. Qxc4 Rc8

14. Qd3

I know feel like I have at least equality. What to do now...

My first thought was Qb6 but Rb1 seems to solve that (and gets his rook out of my bishop's diaognol) and now my queen appears fairly silly there & can easily be driven off.

Re8 seems like the most "principled" move (develop all pieces before trying any fancy stuff). I also considered Nd7 with the idea of coming to e5 or c5 but I wanted to back up the vulnerable & important e-pawn first. If Nd7, white's Nd5 seems very annoying. Re8 seems slow but with white's menacing white squared bishop gone I don't see anything wrong with it.

14. ... Re8

15. Be3

I expected my opponent to develop one of his rooks instead. This move removes the threat of BxN and attacks my a-pawn. Sacs of the a-pawn don't look sound so I figure I'll play the logical looking a6 (moving the object of attack & limiting white's knight somewhat). What's next? h3, f3, f4 (none of those look particularly good for White)? Maybe one of the rooks being developed? It looks like I have a slight edge as my bishop appears to me better than White's. I could be missing something but everything seems pretty calm right now.

15 ... a6

16. Rfd1

Seems like a solid enough move, putting his rook on file with my queen & eventually perhaps threating to push the e-pawn. I only see one "candidate move" for myself here. Qc7, pinning the knight to the c-pawn, eyeing the h2 pawn with a few tricks in mind, the least of which is threating to trade knight for bishop, then bishop for knight & potentially winning a pawn, the most of which probably won't happene because Sashie won't go for it (I'm always open for others to make mistakes though :D).

16. ... Qc7

17. Rc1

this is the move I imagined would be most likely. I'm tired, looking at it now Ng5 seems kind of weak, white simply has too many options. Maybe Nd7 is better. Fortunately I have 14 days to think about it. :D

ok, it's morning now, and my brain's as fresh as it's gonna be with a noisy baby present & uncertain future looming. :D this kind of reminds me of the game logs I wrote when I was playing Civ 2. anywayz... hmm, I'm still not feeling super inspired here, I'm not so sure why I was hatin' on Ng5 last night. Regardless, I'm simply not in the right state of mind for a complex middlegame right now. I'll be back!

ok, it's now one or two days later. I didn't get much sleep last night but I had good sleep/good dreams & I feel overall better. With slightly fresher eyes I'm gonna ditch Ng5 & go with the boring looking but solid looking Qc4. Looks to me like he has to trade queens, allowing me to double rooks on the valueble c-file. I think I definitely have a slight edge here, if I can just maintain it!

18. Bc4

For some reason I didn't expect this, I suppose it's better for black than trading, still, I feel pretty confident in my position. I'm considering Nd7 (with plans to hit e5 later). Another idea is Rc6 with the idea of tripling on the c-file. I probably will choose the first option though, I don't like the idea of white playing e5.

Hmm, 11 days left & now I'm thinking of b5, well not too seriously but just as an idea. e5 doesn't scare me anymore, not sure why it did. Nd7 allows Ne5 which, I think, will be far more annoying in the long term. Rc6 can allow white to gain some time by trading queens though I'm still not sure how much good it does him. I will probably play Nc6 but I'm still not 100% yet.

Ok, I finally went with Rc6. Worst case (I hope) is that I lose a tempo if QxQ. 18. ... Rc6

19. Qf3

Hmm, is this dangerous? I didn't anticipate it. It doesn't appear dangerous at first glance.

Too tired. Will have to wait on this one. This game is very important. If I lose, I'm out of the running. Gotta wait.

Ok, still tired. It's quarter after 1AM but I feel like played chess!

Qf3 doesn't appear dangerous. I simply triple the rooks. e5 doesn't seem dangerous. Nd5 doesn't seem dangerous. They do both, however, seem to lead to a drawish endgame which will be very, very difficult for me to win (assuming Sashie plays well). Which sucks cause I need to win otherwise I won't advance. For this reason I'm going to think on this a bit more.

It's four days into my move now, I'll play Rec8. 19. ... Rec8

20. Nd5

Sashie played this rather quick. Then again, he had plenty of time to think while I tried in vain to search for a powerful bone crushing move. Looks like I have to play knight takes knight here, otherwise bad things happen to good people! 20. ... NxN

21. pxN

I'm playing R6c7, the only move that doesn't lose the exchange.

22. b3

Another forcing move by white. Black's only move that doesn't lose the queen is Qb5. Sashie's talking smack (polite friendly smack of course :D) and I'm worried there's something I'm not seeing :scared:. 22. ... Qb5

23. c4

My move triggered this conditional move. What I expected (I predicted from when I made move 19). I now have three moves - Qh5 (which looks pretty bad), Qd7 (which looks the best) and Qe8 (which looks ok but not as good as Qd7). Wait a minute, WTH am I talking about, Qd7 is terrible & loses the exchange to Bb6. Hmm, Qe8 seems to leave me positionally worse but better than Qh5 (where my queen can get completely shut out of the game).

Maybe Sashie's right, the tide has turned somewhat & while I'm not losing materially he probably has at least a 3/4 pawn's worth positional advantage. :undecide: Oh well, no point in dilly-dallying. Qd7 & Qh5 both seem to suck and there are no other options. 23. ... Qe8

24. Bb6

Forcing my rook to move. 24. ... Rd7 White is potisionally dominant but if I can break out I'm alright.

25. Re1

As I said to Sashie in the game "I have more than one or two options for a change so I think I'm going to think for a bit here!". I'm thinking of Qf8 followed by Bf6 & Qg7 or Qh6. Bf6 first also seems playable.

Wait a minute... what about Bb2, winning a pawn? White doesn't have that dominating a position that I cannot afford to take a pawn. Also, this hobbles white's queenside pawn chain. I think I must do this, it may not prove enough for a win but it's my only chance not to be ground down either into a loss or a draw.

I'm going to wait a few days though, I've been moving quickly for a while now.

5-6 hours later : Screw a few days. I went over it a bit & I don't see any refutation that gets me mated or even loses the pawn back. This is pretty much more only shot not to lose or draw (which, under the circumstances is just as bad). I have to go for it! :D 25. ... Bb2

26. Rb1

Opps, I was shortsighted and missed the basic Rb1 followed by b4 if I take the a-pawn and the bishop is lost. However, I was right in that I wasn't losing anything by trying. At least as far as I can see. I forced the rook onto a slightly less useful file & now I can bring the bishop back to f6 (where I was planning on planting it to make way for the queen on g7 anyway).... or perhaps Be5? Hmm, I'm going to sleep on it.

I'm deciding to go with Bf6 instead of e5. The bishop is harder to attack here & out of the way of any later exchange sacrifices Sashie may come up with (well except the immediate QxB which doesn't seem very good). 26. ... Bf6

27. Re2

27. ... Qf8 (with the plan of Qg7 and contesting the bishops annoying placement on b6, all while making sure the e-pawn is guarded adaquetely).

28. Rbe1

Makes sense. What is there besides Qg7? This position looks drawish (though a computer would probably deem white as having a slight positional advantage). 28. ... Qg7

29. Qh3

Oh cripes. I did not see that.

Looks like I have to sacrifice the e-pawn & brace myself & hope to come out alive & still able to somehow get a draw. :undecide: 29. ... e6

30. pxp

30 ... pxp (what else is there?)

31. Qxe6+

Qf7 seems more active than Kh8. With a pawn down maybe I can still draw and at least now my position isn't so passive! 31. ... Qf7

32. Qxf7+

KxQ seems more natural than RxQ 32. ... KxQ

33. Rd1

I am playing Re7, not sure what else to do, it's potentially trappy if white plays Red2 followed by my doubling of rooks followed by Kf1? (... Bc3!). Of course hoping for this type of thing is no way to play chess but still, no matter what I don't seem to lose anything (besides the pawn I'm already down). I'm lost with perfect play from both sides so my main plan now is to plan odd looking but sound moves & hope Sashie gets greedy, overconfident or simply careless. It's my only chance to win. 33. ... Rd7

34. Red2

Sashie played this quickly (it's about 10 minutes after my last move).

No choice but to go along with my plan now of Rce8. I don't think I lose another pawn whether white plays g3, f3 or f4 and if white quickly plays Kf1 then I'm back in the game (wishful thinking I'm sure though it's good to have dreams :D). 34. ...Rce8

35. Be3

Seems like the only playable continuating is Bg5. 35. ... Bg5

36. Rxd6

Simplifying. And why not, he's up a pawn. 36. ... BxB

37. fxe3 Rxe3
37. fxe3 Rxe3
38. Rd7+ R8e7
39. RxR Rb1

somewhere after this move I started blitizng & ended up losing. There's no guarentee that taking my time would have resulted in a different result however but it couldn't have hurt.

Just won against petergrimes, our group is over now, just waiting for AlpineTrooper to lose all his games on time

I've emailed him twice, as well as PM'ed him while he's been online here. He hasn't responded to any of my attempts at contact.

Is there really no way to boot him from the tourney?

I get this message : "You are not permitted to withdraw a player who has unfinished games."

Either he'll run out of time or play, either way we still have three other groups with unfinished games. And you & I will be eliminated anyway, I'm just itching for next year's tourney. :D

I'm not worried about whether or not I'm eliminated - I'm playing for fun :D

But it seems odd that the site won't let the organizer edit the roster...
