50 Years of Republican Foreign Policy

A lot of left-of-center people like to appeal to Europe ("look how it's done in Europe!", Bernie's appeal to the Nordics' welfare state system being one of the latest and most prominent examples) as if it is some sort of progressive paradise. And I used to think Europe was less racist than the US and more progressive. But events over the past ten years have shattered that delusion.
A really close and old friend of mine just visited me this past weekend. He had just come back home (US) from a trip around Europe. Now this guy has also traveled to some other countries... Japan, Mexico, Canada, various Caribbean islands... Anyway, he sits there arguing with his wife that London was the best of all the places they've visited because of the diversity. She was saying she liked Japan, Mexico... nope... he kept insisting that most of the places they went were fine for seeing a single culture/race/ethnicity... but London was his favourite place in the world because it was so diverse... and he just felt more comfortable in a place where there was alot of diversity...

So then I asked him... "Don't you think that the reason that you prefer diversity is because you are from the US, and that's like... our thing?" ;)
