A tale of woe; a Newb's daily journal

3550BC

My warrior is continuing his explorations but so far he's seen nothing to get really excited about, just more snow and trees. The news of the day is that Entremont has hit pop 2.

I realize that there will be many moves I make which will run counter to the collective wisdom out there. I do value your opinions and suggestions, just understand that in the end I'll still be doing it my way (even if it's wrong). To a large degree this entire game is an experiment of mine where I'm trying out new ideas of mine and seeing how they work (or don't work). :p

Ok, here's your screenie of the day. :)

yes you should, but still store these tips deep in your mind so that in your next game (if your own tactics fail) you can use ours :)

Definitely Coolio. This game is for learning, from my own mistakes AND from others' advice.

And fyi, no your machine didn't flake on you. The first screenie I posted WAS bad quality, so I resaved it with new cropping and resolution and reposted it to make it more legible.

a good job of posting a lot of them

Definitely. A picture is worth one thousand words, and I bet, do you read faster and better a picture or a thousand words? :D

That one-turn-per-day idea is good, by the way. Maybe boring at the start, but on the middle-later stages of the game many things happen in a turn. Or maybe you should have started a crowded game (in a turn it can happen everything :D)

My warrior is slowly making his way around the outside of the national boundary in a counter clockwise direction. At this point I'm just trying to figure out which direction seems most likely to have the best habital land. I'll post another screenie tomorrow of the main map.

Tonight the victory screen unlocked for the first time, so.... from here on out at the end of each day's posting I'll list the scores to-date of each known civ. Since the only victory condition I have enabled for the game is conquest I may very well have to win or lose by score.

Ok.....I know everyone out there is about to hate me for what I'm about to say.....I need to restart.

Personally I hate restarts, my general philosophy is to work with whatever the game dishes out and make the best of it. However after careful consideration I came to the conclusion that for this game (which I expect to take quite awhile) I wanted to make a few changes to the starting conditions. Primarily I wanted to pick a civ myself instead of having it assigned randomly. Honestly I'm not too wild about playing with the Celts.

I'm also going to use a mod I've been working on. The only change with this mod is the size of the map and the number of civs on it. I'm going to a 250x250 map with 20 civs. All other rules are standard and I'm still using the same world settings as the last start.

This WILL be my one and ONLY restart. Whatever I get I'll work with, no matter how bad it might be.

And this time I'm starting with an expansionist civ. I've always been more of a builder than an expansionist so this time I'm going with the Hittites and I'm going to try to out colonize the AIs. This has always been difficult for me because I tend to settle new citys fairly slow compared to others. For this jumbo map of mine though I think the Hittites may be just the thing.

I'll still be only doing one turn per day as before but with an expansionist civ this should seem to go a lot faster to everyone as I'll have scouts exploring as my first city gets up on it's feet.

Below I'll be adding two screenies. The first is what I saw immediately after loading the game and the second is after I had my starting units deployed and ready for the turn change. Btw, this is a beautiful start up location. And yes, after deciding to restart I was determined to take the very first load, whether it was good or bad. I just got really lucky on it.

This is the before:

well thats a much better start than the first one. irrigate the cow, mine the BG, build a granary and pump out settlers.

This game is getting off to a very good start. :)

My scout reports that the natives in the mountain settlement are friendly and that they graciously taught some of our men how to properly embalm a corpse. Whee! Sounds like fun don't it?

Meanwhile I have my worker unit laboring at the cow pasture. Hopefully this will mean a steady supply of beef jerkey and cheese. Yum!

My scout has reported sighting a rich and fertile river system to the south of our fair city. It is thought that with but a little work the land there may yield bountiful harvests.

Grrrr....I have a problem.

It appears that I should have taken some time to do some playtesting of my mod BEFORE I began this game. I'm afraid that due to a goof on my part when I adjusted the map size and number of civs I messed up in accounting for how it would affect civ placement. The result is everybody is dumped altogether in a fairly small part of the globe while the majority of the world is empty. Obviously this presents a bit of a difficulty, as it means whichever civ is able to get a small lead on claiming all that open space will become a runaway monster without hope of stopping them. Talk about the law of unintended consequences.

I think this experiment needs to be put on hold for a bit for me to run my mod through a few hoops while I work out the kinks. I've noticed a couple of other small tweaks that I'd like to make and then test out. When I'm satisfied that the mod is up to code I'll try this again.....maybe. I'm a bit disgusted with myself about this atm.

The one trouble I see with one turn/day is that as soon as CIV4 comes out interest will certainly abate. However I applaud the virture of practicing your patience.
