About The Graphics of Civ VI

The graphics is the best in the series. At first I was a little bit put off by some screenshots, but now I just love it. It looks amazing. And the game feels a lot more alive with its sound effects and ambient sounds, the new fog of war, night and day cycle etc.

I am a little worried that it does look cluttered. I still fancy the clean and clear look of Civ 3

I think the graphics look pretty good and I really haven't seen anything but very generic maps in play. I'd imagine with more extreme map scripts things could get a bit more intense.

My only issue so far with the graphics based on viewing is that it seems really hard to tell what you've explored. The "visited" fog seems a bit tough to decipher vs just dimming things out as in 5. I'm thinking that maybe it's less confusing when you're actually playing since I've yet to see anybody comment negatively on it (in let's plays).

I have seen a few people say it's hard to tell whether resources are developed or not (or even pillaged or not).

While I'm waiting for Civ 6 to unlock I've been playing Endless Legend. That game has me craving Civ 6's art style so much. Endless Legend has a cluttered world map where it's difficult to see anything. I constantly send units down a certain path only to find out there is a cliff wall there I couldn't see. Civ 6 is hugely legible, and I look forward to that.

Maybe you'd prefer the strategic view:

Looks easier to 'read' but a little cartoonish. Might help in the thick of battles though

Everytime I see the strategic view of VI, I wish the normal view had these nice wobbly tile borders. Civ-borders and rivers look way better this way.
And at the same time, I don't know why they would put those wobbly tiles into the strategic view where clarity should be priority.

Because it's still clear even with the aesthetic polish?

I gotta say the graphics not only has grown on me, but now I consider CiV graphics to be too cluttered and difficult to read in comparison.

Indeed, in fact, I tried to find a Civ V graphics mod because I didn't like the clutter and dirt. Unfortunately, I could not find any mods because modding in Civ V wasn't well supported by that engine.

Can't stand the cartoony art style of Civ 6. Gameplay is going to have to be superlative in order for me to pull the trigger on this mutt.

All Civs are cartoony (more or less), especially Civ 4.

Personally I don't mind how it looks right now, but I respect the difference in opinions, I also appreciate that you said "art style" rather than "graphics" makes me cringe when I'm going through youtube comments and keep seeing graphics "this" and graphics "that" when they clearly mean the art style

Is this unit below realistic? This is very cartoony, in fact; plus it's lower quality.

THERE IS NO SPOILER BUTTON?

What do you expect, Beyond the Sword came out 9 1/2 years ago and you're zooming in as far as you can? Anyway, like I said the units and buildings aren't cartoony. The only thing that's really cartoony at all about Civ 4 are the leaders, which is regrettable, but understandable given the challenges with animations circa 2005.

If Civ 4 (units/bulidings) is not cartoony, why Civ VI would be? What makes it "cartoony" that doesn't make Civ 4?

The only reason why they aren't "cartoony" (as you say) is because they didn't have the pixels to do it that way.
