Well, didn't the roles of heavy tanks include taking out enemy tanks, particularly their big tanks?

A tank destroyer is not a tank ... it is a self-propelled antitank gun. Heavy tanks did indeed engage and destroy other tanks, but they were more than self-propelled guns and have much more versatility.

Yeah and tanks were much more expensive.
