I'm sure this has been raised in the past, but I'm wondering if it is possible to implement an adults-only discussion forum, for topics which are not PG-13.

Of course, there has to be a way of preventing minors from accessing the forum, so perhaps the forum could be viewed only if you're a member and only if you're over a certain age.

AFAIK most people I've come across are over 13 on this forum anyway.

How would you know if someone was lying about their age? Honor system?

I think there are two main aspects to the rationale for not letting 'adult' discussion take place. The first is that there are 13-18 year olds who we don't want exposed to certain topics (that is, we're aware that they will in all likelihood be exposed to such topics, but we don't want that exposure to take place here). The second is that 'adult' discussions aren't really fitting with the goal of the forum whether we think they'd be appropriate for 13 year olds or not. I'm not sure I can see how you can have a civ-related 'adult' discussion. This would only be something relevant to OT, but OT is supposed to fit in with the standards of the rest of the site. One of which is being 'family-friendly'. I don't think changing the rules specifically for OT is warranted when that rule change would run contrary to the site standards.

What sorts of issues do you have in mind to discuss there? I cannot think of that many since sexual ones are prohibited in general, so there is ultra-violent ones but i doubt there is much need for that in these forums.

Whew, safe from that ban.

Anything that fits within Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll I guess.

I think more is the case if we had such a section, 1. There would be more freedom discussing the above, but, 2. Any other discussions would actually be a lot better since its just adults, not teens who think they know everything.

Yeah legal definition of adult starts at aronud 18 or 19, but they still aren't really adults yet (mentally anyway). They just think they are.

We should deal with this by banning users under 18.

I dunno, there's a few users who claim to be over 18 who are highly suspect.
