Its not just a Catholic failure, its a Christian failure. Anglicanism is currently fighting a civil war over LGBT issues, Orthodox Christians hate queer people as a rule and the other Protestant denominations are a mixed bag.

And it's not just religious people. Those who never practice anything organized seem to do much the same.

But we're structuring this within that Catholic framework, momentarily, right? It's a failure by them by their own rules, depending on what you look at.

"Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa." And you need to actually strike your breast, or you're a poser.

That is a naive sentiment. The teacher is the one banging on about this stuff in the first place he obviously doesn’t think it contradicts his teachings or, even worse, he just doesn’t care.

When bigoted people have a “completely rational” reason to be a bigot and their arguments are destroyed they usually don’t stop being a bigot. Usually the “logical” argument is a post-hoc justification for their personal disgust or hatred of the group in question. I’ve has that argument enough times to know.

I didn't say it was going to work; merely that it is probably the best way to get it out of your system and maybe score a few minor victories without looking like an absolute tool in front of your entire class. They won't care that you DESTROYED a Smug Bigot with your FACTS and LOGIC; they will care you took away class time from them trying to butter up the teacher to tell them what will be on the test or, most likely, asking for time to work on the 'group project' that turns into screwing around with friends.
I'm not that old. I remember being in high school and I was the know-it-all who just had to argue with teachers. (It was late 2000s, so all about 'socialism' and 'libertarianism') It didn't matter how right I was or how stupid the teacher was being, I was always the one who came off looking bad.

Such a miniature win is not worth Bread’s personal safety!

Hold up; how did we get from "It isn't worth getting into arguments with a teacher in front of the whole class, but here are some ways to get it out of your system" to "it is a thread to his personal safety"?
If the teachers response to "Mr Teacher, how does that square with the pope saying everyone, regardless of sexuality or sexual identity, deserve to be treated with dignity in a loving family" prompts a threat to your personal safety that goes way beyond asking idiots on internet forums and goes right to the police.
