I swore I wasn't going to post in OT anymore, but this is so relevant to recent discussions that I have to start one last topic.

The FRC we've been discussing, along with the AFA, are putting their chips behind Todd Akin's comments.

Here's Bryan Fischer:

I'm leaving OT for my sanity at this point but I just couldn't leave this last point hanging.

So if a woman does get pregnant from a rape, she was asking for it GOT IT!

Read an interesting article tracing this mystical belief to medieval English laws that held a woman who conceived cannot be considered a victim of rape, since it was believed that a woman has to consent to conception. Nice mixture of patriarchy and irrational unscientific dogma, which IMHO remains the underpinning of this belief in the modern age.

That people still believe this in 2012 is stunning, although perhaps not so stunning when one considers there are still people who believe the Earth was created 6,000 years ago and that Jesus walked with the dinosaurs. Because that is really the level this belief is on.

The think with Akin is that he was probably only saying what many of them wanted to say and believe, but didn't have the stupidity he had to do so.

The American far right has a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease. Here's hoping it's terminal.

American "pro-family" organisations, with most of the implications that immediately spring to mind.

This man and this belief is not representative of most conservative Republicans or fundamental Christians. I had personally never heard of this in my 50+ years of life before this came up, either in the church or outside. It is not mainstream Christian doctrine.

I hate that it has come into focus at such a critical time, but hey, this is how Satan works to undermine us all.

The group’s spokesperson, Bryan Fischer said that Akin was “absolutely right.” Continuing, he said that the trauma of a “real, genuine rape, a case of forcible rape” would make it impossible or difficult for a woman to conceive.

Well "impossible or difficult" is a pretty wide range. You'd have to use both the words ignorant and stupid to describe the minds behind this position. This is indeed rightwing nuttery, and the Obama camp and liberals everywhere couldn't have gotten a better campaign gift short of Romney admitting to being a practicing pedophile on live televison

Who're the FRC and the AFA?
The Family Research Council is the same hate group that first interviewed Akin which started this controversy. It is also the one which Don Cathy and Chick-Fil-A contributed.

The American Family Association another organization considered to be a hate group by the SPLC.

Ideology: Anti-Gay

Initially founded as the National Federation for Decency, the American Family Association (AFA) originally focused on what it considered indecent television programming and pornography. The AFA says it promotes "traditional moral values" in media. A large part of that work involves "combating the homosexual agenda" through various means, including publicizing companies that have pro-gay policies and organizing boycotts against them. The AFA has a variety of outlets to disseminate its message, including the American Family Radio Network, its online One News Now and the monthly AFA Journal. In early 2011, the AFA claimed more than 2 million online supporters and 180,000 subscribers to its Journal.

In Its Own Words
"[T]he homosexual lifestyle is characterized by anonymous sexual encounters and celebration of sexual obsession and perversion unparalleled in any other social group."
– Richard Howe, "Homosexuality in America," AFA publication, 1994

"As with smoking, homosexual behavior's ‘second hand' effects threaten public health….Thus, individuals who choose to engage in homosexual behavior threaten not only their own lives, but the lives of the general population."
– Gary Glenn, president of Michigan chapter of AFA, 2001

"Homosexuality is not only harmful to homosexuals themselves, but also to children and to society."
– Stephen Bennett, AFA writer, 2004

"If President Obama, Congressional Democrats, and homosexual activists get their wish, your son or daughter may be forced to share military showers and barracks with active and open homosexuals who may very well view them with sexual interest."
– AFA press release, February 2010

"The homosexual movement is a progressive outgrowth of the sexual revolution of the past 40 years and will lead to the normalization of even more deviant behavior."
– Don Wildmon, AFA website, 1999 (still posted as of 2011).

"Homosexuality gave us Adolph Hitler, and homosexuals in the military gave us the Brown Shirts, the Nazi war machine and six million dead Jews."
– Bryan Fischer, AFA director of issue analysis for government and public policy, 2010

CNN is just jobbing the right story after story. For all intents and purposes they work for the Democratic Party.

Form, a lot of those statements are true, in fact, other than the assertion about Hitler, they are pretty unassailable.

Indeed. CNN very much works to maximize its profits. In the US that means they support a conservative agenda, as do most other media organizations.

Well, there are rightwingnuts and leftwingnuts.
Yeah, except left wing nuts haven't had a meaningful impact on American politics for decades, while right wing nuts have commandeered one of the two major parties and are currently trying to destroy what little is left of the gains the working and middle classes have fought for.

We disagree absolutely.
