Last night, something happened in my game I had never seen before: I had all the AIs turn on me. It was an EMP game as Liz, pangea, all standard stuff.

I played a peaceful game up to that point, expanded to 6 cities, had a very nice buro cap, played my diplo well (atleast I thought so) avoided wars and even started some by bribing AIs onto each other.

Peter finished off Wang, and vassaled Sury. That left Charlemagne, Bismark and JC. Charlemagne was Friendly to pleased with me, Biz was cautious, and JC was Annoyed (I bribed Charly on him a couple of times).

I had Cuirassiers long before the other AIs (as I said, it's only EMP) so I decided to take out the big dog first - Peter. I took 2 cities, then all of a sudden, everyone DOWs me.

I'm just wondering if this is an RNG thing and s**t happens or what could I have done. It was obviously a bribe situation, so maybe I should have given or traded the techs that Peter had available to the other AIs? I forgot to beg for $1 from Charly at least.

I've included a couple of relevant screenshots.

Are you sure, that Peter didn't bribe them against you with some tech like Compass? Can you post a Tech-Screen of after the DoWs?

You're probably right - I said as much in my post that it was a bride. I was just surprised that he managed to bribe all 3 AIs and with Compass. I didn't realize this was that great a tech. But my question remains: I should I have played things moments leading up to the DOW? Maybe bribe Peter into stop trading with the other AIs? Get Compass from him and give it to the other AIs?

What about the AP? Were you the "heathen" or did you have the AP religion? If you weren't in the AP religion, it could have been the declare war on the heathen AP resolution.

Actually I shared Charly's religion which made him quite fond of me...
What religion is the AP? If it was confucian its a very possible cause and would allow Charlie to declare even at friendly.
EDIT - Actually with the Burger King at friendly its hard to think of a way he would declare on you that doesn't involve the AP as at friendly he can't be bribed.

The AI doesn't care about how "great" a tech is. A tech's value to the AI is, as I've always understood it, pretty much entirely based upon the research points required to acquire it.

Divine Right is probably the least valuable tech in the game from a utility standpoint, yet all the AIs will research/trade for it at the drop of a hat...

@Ghpstage, @s.bernbaum

You are wise!

The AP is confu and JC, Sury, Bismark, and Charly all have votes. JC and Sury are confu. Bismark and Charly are Bud.

I just didn't notice any messages that said that the AP has decided to DOW me.

So my next question...If the AP religion doesn't spread to me, I can't be a member and therefore cannot vote to prevent it? What are the options?

Unfortunately you don't get to see any of the resolutions or votes as a non-member.

If it can't spread to you then you must spread to it! Take a city with conf by force.
Once you become a member, even with just one AP city then the war resolution can no longer target you normally. Not sure if it can if you defy though.

The resolution can only be made against a civ that has no AP religion cities. All you need is one to be safe from the AP dogpile. You won't need to vote against the resolution, since it won't come up. Of course, you are then subject to other types of resolutions but they aren't as overwhelming.

This exact thing happened to me in an Immortal game a few months ago. Took me ages to figure out what had happened. It's a lesson I won't forget though. All I did was join a phoney war against Isabella, it wasn't even a real war, then next turn I find my neighbour's praetorians bearing down on me :(
