Update 2 – 1615
Latin World:
Spanish Invent Naval Demi-Culverin! The Spanish have unveiled a brand new technological wonder, the naval Demi-Culverin. Most artillery today are culverins, weighing roughly 4500 pounds each. The Spanish have found away to skim half a ton off that by decreasing the caliber roughly an inch. While the shot fired is not as powerful as the old model, no range has been lost. The result is that Spanish ships can now fit roughly 10-20% more cannons on their ships than before, maximizing firepower to a whole new level.
Mantua Great Idea! In the small Italian state of Mantua the Breton immigrant François Viète has published a work entitled Analyticem Isagoge. In it he lays out what other mathematicians have begun to call “New Algebra,” with a formalized system of symbolical analysis and axioms. While traditionalist mathematicians take little notice, more liberal minds have already begun to adapt this system for themselves. Mathematics may one day become a truly universal language thanks to this man, but efforts by mathematicians and governments in other countries are needed first.

Holy Roman Empire News! Small peasant revolts were put down in both the principality of Alsace this year, as well as Münster. In Mainz the Archbishop-Elector Johann Schweikhard died; Bishop Georg Friedrich has taken over Johann’s role. The death of Count Anton Gunther in battle with the Poles (see below) has resulted in his successor to take the throne: all hail Count Wilhelm von Oldenburg. A third HRE leader, Doge Leonardo of Pisa has died of sudden illness; Mario I now rules over Pisa. The small self-proclaimed kingdom of Tirol has seen some economic boom as wealthy Catholic refugees from Austria begin to pour into the country. The political situation in Tuscany has continued to decline as tensions continue to mount between Cosimo II and his nobles.
(Alsace, Münster, & Tuscany: -1 Stability; Tirol: +1ep)
Portuguese Revolts Put Down! King Fillipe II has decided to violently put down the current rebellions against the throne. In the northeast of his country the nobles decided to put up a fight against all odds and were crushed under royal might. In the Cape Colony royal troops pursued the rebels into the hinterlands where they were tracked down and destroyed. All the current threats against the throne have been taken care of, but the political situation remains tense.
(Portugal: -4 Infantry Regiments, -1 Cavalry Regiment; Cape Colony: -1 Metropole Regiment)
French Protestants Revolt! The French invasion of Avignon has been the last straw for a great number of France’s protestant community. While Huguenot support has been tentatively sustained by supporting Scotland, other Protestants have not been swayed. An uprising has occurred in southern France around the regions of Navarra and Armagnac, stretching into Languedoc and Rodez. The uprising seems to remain localized for now, protestants in Normandy and other regions of northern France remain passive, as does the Reformed population at large. Still France has lost a force sent to the region meant to keep peace, and their initial victory over Avignon has been lost. Dissention not only in the country, but in the military is starting to grow and many in Paris are beginning to fear civil war.
(France: -2ep, -6 manpower, - 6 Infantry regiments, - 2 Cavalry regiments)
Papal Revolt Ends! The Pope has successfully been able to negotiate a way out for the peasants. He has sided with them against their lords, agreeing to lower taxes. The lords have begun to instead receive a pension from Rome for their troubles, in return for recruits from the general populace for military service. As the feudal situation grows a little more complex, everyone seems happy enough.
(Papal State: +1 stability)
Austrian Revolt Defeated! After the Catholic rebels were officially rebuked by the Pope, support from no other source seemed to come. With no hope in many of the wealthier rebels fled the country for Tirol. Still the rebels had a strong fortified presence in Klagenfurt. Under normal circumstances the Austrians would have been content to simply lay a siege on the city, but with French armies amassing neat Austrian Netherlands Archduke Matthias decided a frontal assault would be needed to free up his forces. The assault would prove bloody, but the revolt was ended and the countryside has returned to a sense of normalcy.
(Austria: -6 Infantry Regiments, -1 Artillery Regiment, +2 ep)
Thuringia Stabilizes! The situation in Thuringia has stabilized for two reasons. Firstly the Poles have begun to invest heavily in securing the allegiance of the local nobility. Secondly Prince-Elector Johann Friedrich II has passed away allowing his son Johann Dietrich to take over. The new Prince-Elector is more active in politics and has decided to place his full support behind the Poles.
(Thuringia: +2 Stability)
WARS:
War Between the James! As the newest Anglo-Scottish War is being mockingly called, continued this year near stagnate levels. While the English have tightened their grip around Edinburgh, the city remains in Scottish control. Attacks into the Scottish Highlands were rebuked as the English cavalry advantage is negated in the mountainous terrain. The Scots have bolstered their army through French mercenaries who have been bought off personally by the French king. While the France remains nominally neutral, it is obvious that it has taken sides in the conflict. The entry of French support has negated much of the religious rhetoric, allowing both Scotland and England to stabilize their religious minorities.
(England: -4 Infantry Regiments, -4 Cavalry Regiments
Scotland: -4 Infantry Regiments, -2 Infantry Regiments(Mercenary))
Breton War! Across the channel France’s war continues to be raged against Brittany and its allies. The majority of fighting has occurred around Nantes where France attempted several costly assaults. While several outlying forts have fallen to French force, the city and some surrounding defenses still lie in Breton control. To the north it turns out French and Breton forces were nearly evenly numbered, but superior French horsemanship has kept the Bretons held prisoner in their own defenses. French generals speculate at most two years of resistance is left in Brittany…if France doesn’t implode before then. To the east France has engaged the allied armies of Lorraine and The Palatinate in Austrian Netherlands. A French offensive has pushed the allies to city walls as French cavalry continue to sweep open battlefields clear of enemies. Yet with Austria’s religious civil war now over, Austrian reinforcements could tip the tide next season. To the south France has opened up a new front against Avignon. The small state was on the edge of surrender when the French Protestants mounted a revolt. French forces attacking Avignon were forced to call off the attack to ensure the Protestants did not hit the French forces from behind on their way to Avignon..
(France: -16 Infantry Regiments, -3 Cavalry Regiments
Brittany: -7 Infantry Regiments, -3 Cavalry Regiments
Lorraine: -2 Infantry Regiments, -1 Cavalry Regiment
The Palatinate: -2 Infantry Regiments, -1 Cavalry Regiment
Avignon: -3 Infantry Regiments)
Battle of Biscay! At sea the French have engaged the Breton navy for the first time. The battle, not far from Nantes, resulted in a non-to-surprising French victory. While the Britons were more capable seamen than the French, the French simply brought more ships, and more cannons, to bear in the battle. As the French and Breton Galleons squared off, the superior number of French Carracks allowed them to overpower the Breton capital ships forcing the Breton fleet back to port.
(France: -1 Flyte, -2 Barques, -2 Carracks
Brittany: 1 Flyte, -3 Barques -1 Galleon)
Polish War! Poland has launched a massive attack against Bohemia who has been running their forces from fort to fort. Polish artillery simply smashes each defense that the Bohemians can get to within weeks. The Bohemians have been chased all the way to Prague and have begun to sue for peace. While Poland has success on this front, to the west it has seen no victories. Attacks against defenses around Bremen have met with disaster as Gelre’s leader Duke Arnold III leads one of the most brilliant defenses in decades. While the head of Oldenburg died in a skirmish near his border, it has only strengthened the resolve of his countrymen. To the south combined forces under Hesse have defeated the Poles in a major battle, and have successfully linked up with Gelre.
(Poland: -8 Infantry Regiments, -4 Cavalry Regiments, -1 Artillery Regiment
Bohemia: -5 Infantry Regiments, -5 Cavalry Regiments
Gelre: -2 Infantry Regiments, -1 cavalry regiment, +1 prestige
Oldenburg: -1 Infantry Regiment
Hesse: -1 Infantry Regiment, -1 Cavalry Regiment
Cleves: -1 Infantry Regiment)
Colonial News:
Spanish Expansions! Spain has expanded its colonies in the New World and Africa. New Spain has expanded to the northwest, perhaps in response to increased Portuguese activity in the area. Meanwhile Spanish Congo has also expanded along the coast of Africa solidifying the colonies position.
Breton-French Colonial War! With Brittany unable to come to the aid of her colonies, France has launched a campaign to capture them. The colony of Rio de Oro in West Africa has successfully been captured by France. This is crucial as it was the main way point between Brittany and its South American colonies. Further invasions have captured half if Bresil and a third of new Brittany. English colonials in Henryland have begun to believe the entire war is an attempt to surround their colony and have begun to petition London to somehow stop France’s efforts.
(Rio de Oro: -1 native regiment)
Eastern World:
Russian Peasant Revolt Crushed! The Russian Czar has decided to make a show of force against the peasants, moving against them with the full force of the military. Within weeks the peasants had either been slaughtered, went back to their farms, or fled the country.
(Russia: -4 Infantry Regiments)
Crimean Peasant Revolt! The rebel spirit has seemed to migrate from Russia to Crimea even as the Ottomans launch their invasion. It would appear that some Cossacks are opposed to the Khan’s current project to try and settle their people down. The rebellion threatens to cut of Ottoman logistics as their armies fight in Russia.
Polish Peasant Revolt! A peasant revolt has also opened up in Poland’s eastern provinces. Refugees from Russia’s dead peasant revolt have incited the local populations here to rise up against Polish rule. The revolt has been put down, but the situation is a symptom of an ever destabilizing Poland and may be the sign of struggles between the King in Warsaw and his provinces to the east.
(Poland: -1 Infantry Regiment, -1 stability)
Jews Migrate to Ottoman Empire! Now being considered a second wave of immigration (the first haven taken place roughly 100 years earlier during the inquisition), a great number of Jews have moved to the Ottoman Empire. The majority have decided to plop down in the growing city of Salonica, already home to a large number of Jewish émigrés. The city is quickly becoming a center of finance and trade, though no where near the level of Constantinople or Alexandria. Though there are growing local problems as the Muslim plurality may not be the largest group for long.
WARS:
Norway! Russian forces have retreated to newly constructed fortifications around Narvik where supplies trickle in during summer. The rest of the country is all but lost and the situation looks bleak as Swedish and Danish forces outnumber the Russians and St. Petersburg now has bigger fish to fry.
Ottomans Invade Russia! For the third time in a century the Ottoman Empire has begun an invasion of Russia. The invasion has been limited so far as neither side has truly gone forth to engage the other. The Ottomans have not been stopped from linking up with Kazan, while Kazan has not really been stopped from reclaiming majority Muslim lands from Russia. The entire situation has threatened Russia’s hold in Siberia and Tomsk. The Russians haven’t been idle, having to put down revolts and mobilize the countryside. Thanks to the threat of invasion the Czar has been able to rally most of the country and is now prepared to fight the Ottomans. To the south Georgia has yet to become involved, perhaps hoping the two powers simply destroy each other. It would appear that the Ottomans had been hoping to strike even more areas, but the lack of Crimean support has been problematic in fostering such maneuvers.
(Russia: -3 Infantry Regiments, +2 stability
Ottomans: -1 Cavalry Regiment)
Colonial News:
Tomsk Expands! The Russians had poured a lot of resources in expanding Tomsk, which is the fastest growing region of Russia. A mutual border with the Ming has begun to foster trade, and local populations have remained friendly. But with the Ottoman and Kazan attacks the Russian far east is in danger of collapsing.
Muslim World:
Khorasan Modernizes Army! Khorasan has adopted modern army strategy and tactics imported mainly from the Ottoman Empire, but also through Oman and limited contact with the Portuguese. Khorasan now has the opportunity to train their military to be equivalent to the European powers.
(Khorasan: +1 prestige)
Oman Puts down Revolt! Oman is the scene of religious violence this year as Sunni minorities launched a failed revolt against the Emir. The Sunni rebels were hoping to get support from the Ottoman Empire and then replace the heretical government in Muscat. The rebellion fell on its face due to the fact Oman has become a predominantly Shia country, and the lack of Ottoman support.
(Oman: -1 Stability)
WARS:
War in East Africa! Khorasan has secured peace with Adal for a marginal amount of border land and Adal’s land near Zanzibar as Adal becomes an Ottoman vassal. This has freed up its forces in Africa to begin moving against Swahili. In the south the Tanzanian force has been unopposed in conquering the land near Mutapa. To the north the main Swahili armies have been held at bay, but the Khorasan army has been unable to wholly defeat the forces. In the far south Mutapa has conquered the outposts of Swahili near their borders.
(Swahili: -4 Native Infantry Regiments
Khorasan: -2 Native Musket Regiments)
Indian World:
Gondwana Has New King! King Hirade Sahi died this year to be replaced by his son Jaitra. The event went almost without notice except for the fact that some radical Hindus in the south of the country have launched a rebellion against the King. They have claimed the king is not faithful enough to lead the country. The have actually made overtures to Vijayangar to intervene in Gondwana and replace the king. Doing so may rupture the Hindu alliance system.
Other Indian News! The King of Nepals has passed away to be replaced by Siddhi Narasimha. In Rajaputana some local nobles revolted which was quickly crushed by the loyal military.
(Rajaputana: -1 Native Musket Regiment)
WARS:
Vijayangar Wars! Forces in Ceylon have been met with failure to destroy enemy forces. The Ceylonese troops have used the mountains and jungles to hide and launch raids against occupying forces. No major battles or large casualties have been reported on other side. In Khandesh Vijayangar has met with much better success. After more than a year of siege the capital of Khandesh has fallen and King Miran Bahadur Shah has been forced to surrender his kingdom to Vijayangar and his country has been annexed.

Khandesh: -independence)
Chinese World:
WARS:
Japan Conquers Sulu! The Japanese have sent out a strong expeditionary force to conquer the island-nation of Sulu located near Brunei. The overwhelming show of military force crushed all Sulu resistance. The island, an important trading site, now ships goods from the East Indies to Japan. The local power of Brunei has condemned the invasion, but has made no moves to stop Japanese rule in the area.
(Japan: -1 Native Musket Regiment, -2 Junks, +1 prestige, +1ep)
African World:
WARS:
Ottomans in Ethiopia! The war in Ethiopia has taken a turn for the boring. Ethiopia has received invigorated leadership which has seen to a strong defensive line. Ottoman attempts to lure the Ethiopian army out into the open haven't worked, and without a strong enough force has decided not to try to engage the Ethiopians in their highland defenses. With neither side risking engagement little fighting has actually taken place. However with Adal now a vassal of the Ottoman Empire and a long time enemy of Ethiopia to begin with, fortunes may change next year.

From Gondwana Religious Rebels:
Please replace this unfaithful king for us. The gods would be most grateful.

From Bohemia & Allies:
We will accept your annexation of Hungary and return to prewar borders for peace.
Ooc:
To lizardking: I just dumped all your money into navy research
To Milarqui: the transfer of normal regiments to the colonies costs 1ep each. This is to simulate the coast of financing large colonial defenses/wars
To Karalysia: You both didn’t send orders. If you don’t send them again your country will be open
To Adrogans: Your advisors have decided that for 30ep each you will avoid 1 stability of loss to westernize (30ep for -2, 60ep for -1, etc)
Next update will not be this weekend, but next weekend. This is because I'm changing the order due day to Thursdays so I can start work on the update on Friday and be posted on Saturday.
