Phrossack no, don't derail my hype train!

It's a shame, because if we assume
Spoiler :
the First Order and the Resistance are locked in a regional conflict as the Alliance struggles to piece the Galaxy back together
, it does offer an interesting setting without having to ratchet the scale up to galactic proportions. I liked the political power-plays of the Prequels, even though the presentation was so ham-handed. If the acting is good and the story isn't a straight recycle it could still work, and with any luck the follow-ups will veer off into an entirely different direction; I was planning to cash in a free movie ticket I've been holding for a couple years when it hit theatres, but maybe I will wait for the reviews.

Hey, I'm not saying it won't be a good movie--I think it'll be pretty good--but since it's a $4,000,000,000 investment that they can't afford to risk with too many untested ideas and innovations, we're in an era of franchises and sequels that capitalize on nostalgia, and Star Wars was never innovative in terms of plots, that's probably what we can expect to see. But that's what we've always seen, and we Star Wars fans have always loved it (except, for many if not most, the prequels). Star Wars has always drawn very heavily on a lot of different genres like sword-and-sandals, Westerns, WWII movies, samurai movies, and so on, and its plots have never been that original, but that's never bothered us too terribly much. It'll probably have everything Star Wars fans expect from it, and will probably be a lot better than the prequels.

I agree that it would be interesting to see some well-done political conflict. For some reason (probably because I love history), I enjoy seeing good representations of the flaws and conflicts within a political system, as long as it's not pure intrigue with nothing but schemes and usurpations. The Expanded Universe did a much better job handling the political side of things than the prequel films because it wasn't hamstrung by tight time constraints and George Lucas, and I liked it. It would be nice to see, say,
Spoiler :
the First Order rising to power in some corner of the galaxy while a small resistance movement fights it. Meanwhile, the successor to the Rebellion is too busy taking on the overwhelming task of governing a galaxy to notice or care about what it regards as Imperial wannabes with far-fetched schemes of restoring what they lost, so the heroes are either on their own or have to struggle to win Rebel support.
A lot could have happened in the past three decades, and hopefully Abrams does a good job of filling us in on that in a believable way. Maybe we'll see something like that.

I have tickets to the Thursday night premier. Super hyped, although I know deep down it could be a plot rehash, and JJ Abrams is a man of generic sci-fi tastes, if nothing else. All the trailers have harkened back to 4-6 excessively. I dunno. I like to hold out hope; Star Wars is easily my favourite fictional universe, and one I've invested thousands of hours into, but I'd rather not see a nostalgia piece. We didn't kill all the EU just to rehash the original trilogy.

I expect, in the end, the movie will be a decent or solid flick that is simultaneously praised for avoiding the poor quality of the prequels, and yet also feels a bit disappointing in how it turns out.

Speaking of trailers, y'all might've heard of Cameron Arrigioni and his recuts of the original films in today's spoileriffic style:

Spoiler :

Endorsed by Luke Skywalker himself:

No word yet on RotJ.

please a 2D option for the city of Bursa . Have never watched 3D before and ı hear lots of bad things about it , probably related to early glitches ...

Problem with 3D is it's used mostly as a gimmick, rather than an integral component of the film's aesthetic. Good 3D films are few and far between.

When I read about it all just repeating I felt disappointed beyond measure. I hadn't even considered such a lazy approach.

But I got to say - after having watched the trailer, I don't care. That looked like awesome light entertainment. I am looking forward to it.

A well done original and even brainy approach would be better and may get me actually hyped up as I got hyped up in my teenage years.

But this is good enough for me to not care for complaining.

so hyped

Star Wars created a lot of thin ice to tread on over the years, the result of which is me being too skeptical about this

Star Wars can never be bad. Phantom Menace is a staple of my chilhood, what with the pod racing and Darth Maul (I mean, c'mon, double blade lightsaber, how cool is that?)

I for one liked the politics in the prequels.

People really do like to overattack Lucas's direction, but I always enjoyed how the plot came together in conception over the decades of the Star Wars movie timelines. I kind of worry that Abrams will handle this trilogy like a rehash of the original 3 movies, rather than a continuation of the galaxy-building style that I enjoyed in Lucas's films.

It does unfortunately feel like the first film is going to be a rehash of A New Hope. I'm not a fan of the casting either. Regardless, still excited, still hyped, and very interested in seeing how it pans out.

You mentioned the only good bits of the first movie, which shows just how bad it was.

When you're a kid you only keep the good bits of the movie. I didn't remember all the Gungan bits except something about the battle until I rewatched it.

When the Phantom Menace came out I had a housemate who literally lived for Star Wars. He happened to be in America when it came out, so he saw it before it came out here. I asked him how it was when he got back. He said it was fantastic. "Not as good as the originals, though?" I said. "Yes," he replied - but there was something dead about his eyes...

All this time I've been wondering what IS that made the prequels cast a big shadow over one of my favourite films, and then Mr. Plinkett explained it very coherently

ı didn't see Episode I at the theaters , II was somehow missing . At III ı was working at the museum and the whole city knew me . There was a couple over the aisle , the girl left early . No doubt wondering what the hell her boyfriend was thinking while watching the lightsaber duel on Mustafar . Then the movie ended and she saw me leaving , practically walking in the air . They are good , the prequels , if you give a chance to your mind to gloss over Jar Jar , who actually serves the story admirably .
