By 1261 they made their 'miraculous' recovery, not least because the Fourth Crusade didn't actually damage the Byzantine state that much. Which they also seem to have managed in kangaru's ATL. The Byzantine state was militarily and economically the strongest of all its neighbors (save, economically, for the Venetians and possibly the Genoese). It successfully faced down multiple attacks from one of the most powerful centralized military machines in Europe. I truly do not see where you are coming from.

... well i got no good counter arguments. clearly i still need to do some more research. and read carefully.

10 more years of reading 'til omnipotence Dachs ;)

The Ukraine is surprisingly big.

Edit: the UAE is massive.

After the passage of healthcare and Obama's re-election, the Teabaggers have had enough. The Southern states lead by Glenn Beck secede, Texas lead by Rick Perry secedes and Alaska lead by Sarah Palin. Obama forcibly expels Utah and the Plain states from the Union, but agressively invades and conquers Canada, Greenland, and Iceland and takes all of his 2008 states . Castro dies and wills his country to Obama who annexes it and Haiti, Dominican Republic and much of the Carribean and seizes New Orleans and the panhandle. With an alliance with Chavez they dominate much of the region. Moose Queen Palin faces Putin looming over Alaska.

The future is grim for Teabaggers.

Why have the separate confederacies not united into one lead by President Palin, Vice President Beck, and Secretary of Everything Rick Perry? Nice Hitler Moustaches, though.

And Chavez = Doubleplusungood. He is not true socialist, he just concentrates power in his own hands.

Wait, in most European countries the parents aren't allowed to discipline their children with an occasional slap/spank?

:lmao:

Oh boy...

(about the schools - I've never seen that happen and never heard about a case of a teacher using physical violence against students other than in self-defence. I wonder what does the map refer to, really)

In UK you can hit your child but if it leaves a mark for longer than 24 hours your in big trouble!

Did your parents ever get in trouble for dropping you on your head?

Well, whenever my brother steps out of line he gets the occasional slap on the hand (he's young so it makes him cry).

But it's not like we have a belt lying around that we whip his ass with  Are you allowed to do that in Czech Rep?

Sure, but it's somewhat old-fashioned. My parents used a plastic hose for that purpose :mischief:

Seriously, excessive corporal punishments are bad and nobody tolerates it here, but telling parents that they can't even spank their own child is ridiculous. Especially since in most of the countries which issued this ban it is perfectly legal to teach kids religion or do other forms of mental abuse. Compared to that, occasional slap is nothing.

BTW, a cabinet minister in the previous gov. proposed a similar "slap ban", but the public reaction to that was "is she crazy or what?!"

I suppose people thought that the line between "teaching the kid a lesson" and "abuse" were so thin that they'd do better with just banning it once and for all.

I am going to guess that under normal circumstances the laws would tend to not be enforced.
It would remove a very subjective defense if people decided a parent was taking to too far.
