Hi everybody - just to go back to the EU question!!

Some of the advantages about the union is that internal trade will get easier, there will be less tarifes between the EU counties. We are trying to get a common currency, so that traveling in Europe will get easier and that will also help trade inside the union. The common currency will probably make the EU a better competitor on the international market. We are considering to get treaties on police cooperation and social welfare. The different taxes will be equalized and therefore creating a more harmonized competition between the countries.
What it might do to stabilize the entire region we don't know yet but we have our hope high on it.
And finally, when we stand together we have a lot more to say on international matters and we stand alot stronger when dealing with the US and their Echelon system!!!

I can understand the need for the EU. I would hate for there to be 50 different currencies here in the States. The would suck ***

Yea I know what you mean, when I was working as a tourguide in Rome, I was employed by a Swedish conpany so my pay was in Swedish kroner - just great a Dane working in Italy getting Swedish money!!!

As a non-European, I don't know how much benefit this will all ultimately be for the people of Europe. My only problem with it is the name they chose for the common currency. I mean, really. 'Euro'? Come on! This won't be the first time the same currency is accepted all over Europe; couldn't they call them 'florins' or 'ducats' or 'crowns' or 'sous' or something like that? Anything but 'euros'. Ugh!

I know 'Euro' isn't the best name, but it was one of the only names that wasn't associated with one of the member countries and that was something that everybody could agree on - the new currency could not 'favor' one of the countries.

Well, yeah. That is true. Still, when I visited Europe a few years ago, I was able to have my money converted into lira and francs and so on. Next time I go, I'm going to feel like an idiot asking the teller to please give me 'five hundred euros'. +_+

Well it's better that saying:
"Give me 500 europeans"
Right??

They could have named it after one of ancient roman coins that pan-europeic at one time, such as the denarius or the sesterce.

Well the could have done that, but I think they wanted something more modern - and besides that would also favor Italy since they are old "Italian" coins
They choose the Euro and there is nothing we can do about it!!!

Well 56% voted no and that means that 44% voted yes - I did so I care!!

You voted yes, didn't you? If we are goning to have a voting about it here in sweden then I would probebly be to young to vote. But if I should vote I would have voted yes.

You got it Håkan, of cause I voted yes, and so did approximately 85% of all people with a higher than college education.

Oh my god. Please don't ever again tell me that Canada wasn't in any wars. Please not ever again. I don't hate Americans at all but I have to set you straight on a few things.

We entered both world wars LONG before the US. We had a mighty army and a powerful Navy at the time that made valuable contributions to both of those wars.

WW1
---

We were involved in some VERY famous battles of the 1st world War. Vimy Ridge (April 7th, 1917) for example where our troops (all four Canadian divisions fighting together for the first time) took a strategic hill after both the French and English had failed. It was through the blood sweat and valour that day that historians claim that Canada became a nation.

The greatest fighter pilots the world has ever seen have been Canadian. Billy Bishop for instance - the greatest pilot of the first world war.. 72 confirmed kills. Did you know that a Canadian shot down the Red Baron? Colishaw I think his name was.. or maybe Brown. I can't remember. Either way they were BOTH aces.

Canada has the highest percentage of "aces" (pilots with 5 or more kills) per capita than any other nation in the world.

60,000 Canadians troops were killed in WW1

WWII
-----

Canadians tried holding the line in the paific where they were outnumbered and overrun by the japanese while defending Hong Kong I believe. Winston Churchill knew that it couldn't be saved but decided to put up a symbolic defense. Canadian troops were thrown to the wolves.

Canadian WWII veterans go back to holland and are greeted as heroes.. The dutch never forget that Canadian soldiers liberated their homeland. We lost 42,000 soldiers in WWII. We hit the beaches of normandy fighting just as you did. We took juno beach by the way.

And before that our troops were thrown onto Dieppe.. A poorly planned "practice" invasion. Our guys were chopped to shreds and it became a pointless slaughter. But lessons were learned that later saved lives come the real D-Day.

Korea
------
In Korea today Canadian veterans are also remembered as heroes and victors. We played a large part in that ground war. Our teenagers fought and died on the frozen hillsides of Korea just the same as yours did.. and fought with distinction I might add. ever heard of the battle of Kapyong? A Canadian unit is credited with saving Seoul.. standing firm against thousands of chinese troops... calling down artillery on their own positions when it looked as if they'd be overrun. They received a US Presidential Unit Citation.

Vietnam
--------
As for Vietnam.. they say that for every american draft dodger that came north to Canada.. one Canadian citizen went across the border to a recruiter and said.. "Sign me up. combat. Vietnam"

Say what you want about Canada.. i really don't care. Just please don't belittle our military heritage. It's a dishonour to the thousands of canadian men and women that have given their lives for this country and my freedom. (as both a Canadian person as well as a person of dutch descent)
