The night illuminated with strikes of lightning. Flashing and banging and screeching like the nuclear wars of months ago, the few surviving birds of the area were driven away in large waves that further darkened the sky. Even the dim moonlight, made murky through the dark overcast and dead branches of the forest, seemed to be swallowed whole in this dusk. No other time possessed a grimmer augur than this night, when I received orders from Fairmont to take an expedition to the ruins of Bethesda, Maryland. The city, which for hundreds of years had a dark and ever-glowing curse around it, became an even darker symbol for America when it became the headquarters of the Browder Administration. Deep into the Earth was constructed the Communist Headquarters, where sin and savagery was committed. After Operation Tea Party, the nuclear waste that fell over the city turned it into a quarantined zone where the buildings collapsed and officials would not even dare go deep into the region to save those proclaimed missing. Now after the nuclear holocaust, the region is even more destroyed, more contaminated, and more evil. I fear; the people who would journey with me to Bethesda are more poisoned and disillusioned than I am. What we are expected to find is unclear, but there must be -something- worth finding. There must be a reason why, at the twilight of the human race's life, that the government would use their last breath to send us in those catacombs.

The team is ready. With me is archeologist Theodore Bramford, assistant Michael Hamling, and the toughest gun in the whole States, Douglas "Red". Of course the purpose of the expedition is mainly scientific, if I understood correctly. I, Owen Chamberlain, will both organize the expedition and be the chief analyst of the information we retrieve from Bethesda.
We have set out on our expedition in a beat up Volkswagen van from the Wallace Administration that has been converted to a portable research facility. The plush carpets are a little out of place, but the millions of dollars of equipment neatly stashed inside makes me feel at home. Red, as we call Douglas, has been increasingly irritable as I give him orders. Perhaps I made a mistake in his hiring. Bramford and Hamling are both very loyal friends of mine, and I give them high amounts of trust.
We just made it through our first military checkpoint. Putting on our gas masks and anti-radiation outfits, we now venture into the quarantined area of Maryland. Bethesda is not far from here. As we draw closer, our range of view steadily decreases and picks up a green hue. The crackling of dead trees at this time of night is startling. Hamling has stated numerous times, peaking out of the curtains of the Volkswagen, that he has seen terribly deformed faces in the darkness of the forest. Red, cleaning his guns in the back of the van, is obviously hiding his fear by putting on a tough guy persona.
The entire exploration team gets eaten alive except one explorer who escapes the zombies by going back in time... well maybe two explorers and one of them travels back to India to join William Sayer otherwise known as Mrityunjay .
I don't actually remember where I got them. I think I ordered it online. Probably you could find it at any hobby store.
I mentioned Chrononauts because there is one character who is a radioactive sentient cockroach whose species became sentient from nuclear radiation in a timeline where a nuclear war took place in 1963.

I just realized that this story has over 90,000 views, making it have more views than either half of Princes of the Universe and also more views than the Celestial Bureaucracy, making it (I think) the 4th most viewed story on this forum, after Rome: Eternal Empire (cough update METY) and 2 others.
Yeah I look at that frequently. My Brazil story is in like the top 50 I believe. It's fourth in replies because of it being an IAAR America is second I believe.

Well, actually, not really. I just checked the forum views, and America is currently 7th. (8th if you count Sulla's Civ IV Walkthrough; it was apparently moved to another forum)
1# - Number 1 is a realpolitik, likely the first one, too, (327K)
2# - 2 is PoTU Pt. 1, (also 327K)
3# - 3 is Don Diety, (175)
4# - This one is METY's Rome, (117)
5# - That was where Sulla's Walkthrough was, can't give you exact numbers,
6# - The Celestial Bureaucracy, (97)
7# - PoTU, the second one, (95)
8# - Finally clocking in at eight is our beloved America (90,000)
