My own version in this thread trend.

We came very close, you know, to being able to elect a President for life. What do you think, though: should we abolish the two-term limit, and be able to elect a President over and over again, if we so wish? Or, should we change it so that the President serves a lifelong term as POTUS? With all the normal rules applying, of course, he would just have a longer tenure in Washington.

Personally, I hate the two-term limit. If a man (or woman) is doing a good enough job leading our country as to be wanted for President again, who are we to stand in his way, and say "no it's somebody else's turn to try and screw it up?"

Of course if there are people who are all for an Imperial American system, by all means, let it out here!

Not unless I'm King.

As for the Presidential limits thing, I don't really care. If people want to change the Constitution so that a President can serve as many terms as he can get elected for, then I won't stand in their way. But I won't help either.

You can't really just adopt a monarchy. Monarchies left today a remnants of the past where the monarch had entire rule over the kingdom. It wouldn't really work to just create an important family and tell Americans they should accept them. Those around today are descendants of very important people in that country's history.

"...kings and queens and guillotines taking lives denied..."

Sorry, the thought of monarchy leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The CSA had it right: one six-year term for the president.

Could be an interesting twist.

I agree with this. So I voted yes. I wouldn't support a President for Life or monarch.

Yes, and Tom Cruise can be our King...

First of all, not having term limits is not a monarchy. Not even close. Hell it is much more of a democracy than having term limits. By definition a democracy should be AT THE WILL of the people. Well what if THE PEOPLE want a POTUS to serve 3 terms. That is democracy.

I think you should abolish the two term limit and let them rule as long as they have the peoples support.

NO

We did not have a revolution against a British Monarch for independence in order hundred of years later to lapses back into Monarchy. Our country's forefathers will be rolling in their graves if an American even thought about going into a Monarchy government.

The problem with the two-term limit is that presidents tend to think shortsightedly, looking a maximum of 8 years ahead. That's not a good way to run the country. It also encourages blaming current problems on past Presidents.

I would say we have the opposite problem; the fact that presidents can be re-elected at all is reason for presidents to spend their first terms trying to do what is popular instead of what is right.

I propose we adopt the Swedish monarchy.

I suppose that's true as well. Which means you have two major problems with your system :p
