AND2 and SVN Bug Reports - A New Dawn 2 ONLY

So, I had to dig out some very old threads 1. and 2. and it looks like whipping was removed by Afforess eons ago. I've actually never felt the need to hurry production by sacrificing population and neither should have the vast majority of you players since it's the first report of this "problem" in 2 years.
Personally I wouldn't mind reintroducing this feature and it's just a trivial xml change; just add

Code:
			<Hurrys>
				<Hurry>
					<HurryType>HURRY_POPULATION</HurryType>
					<bHurry>1</bHurry>
				</Hurry>
			</Hurrys>

under Slavery in Civ4CivicInfo.xml. The problem was that AI wasn't very smart in using this feature and it was killing its population too much, so it could do more harm than good.
But since the game looks balanced as it is and Slavery looks good enough as it is now, it will stay this way and I won't add population hurrying again. :)

Even without the whipping I like Slavery and use it as long as I can with Vassalage. The Slave Markets and Shanty Towns is a winning strategy for me. I am currently playing AND 661 at Prince level at Eternity speed on the gigantic map. I very much hope that it is not removed.

It was replaced with another mechanism that took the idea of Slavery as a World View and removed it from the Civics. It's still in C2C but in a "new" form. I still don't/won't use it even if it is just a game mechanic, just like cannibalism, which is also in C2C as part of the World View system.

Real problem with Slavery as a game mechanic is that it has Always been way too OP and no Modder will mute it. Hence I've seen over the years the AI hang on to Slavery Civic when other seemingly more Modern and beneficial Civics were available. It has too many incentives for the AI to want to move on from it. And as the game progresses thru the eras this should not be the case.

But since I've failed to make KROME a viable mod I can't present an option to Slavery for those that feel about it as I do. Just like REV I won't and will not use Slavery. To those of you who have no qualms or trepidations over using either have at it. Just don't ever force those of us who do not want those Options to have to use them by making them Default.

I'll get off my soapbox now. :p

Thanks for the clarification.. I was just wondering why I couldn't whip my ant army into shape! My Civ (Elizabeth) was placed onto marshlands with 3 potato fields and I needed a way to get back at crazy Montezuma and the Aztecs who always attack me first! With lotsa food, I can dominate early...

That's one of two situations I ever use slavery - when I've got a city (Sometimes my only city!) that is growing itself into sickness and anger, faster than a weed even, but only has minimal production. Slavery not only cuts that city size down a bit, but makes all that food useful.

I suppose you mean you use it in Vanilla Civ or other mods, because there's no way to do it in AND since before AND 1.75...

Yeah I forgot to mention that ^^;
I shouldn't post when very tired it seems!

IPEX, thanks for the reply. I tried both methods(copy & move) and i haven't seen any difference.
I don't exactly understand what you say in your last phrase about editting file and adding comment.

@ Nionios - why it says you don't have a valid directory is because your using a incorrect direction.

you only need to Edit the Pink line of text at the bottom to direct the mod to the correct CivilizationIV.ini file directory.

the usual one is C:/My Games/Beyond the Sword.

an example of mine is this:

rootDir = "H:/My Games/Beyond the Sword"

For ME.... I use 64 bit Linux operating system, and it uses a Virtual drive H to emulate the windows programs.

This file, CvAltRt.py MUST reside in both the top most directory, where the Rise of Mankind Config.ini file is and in the Directory of /Assets/Python (copy and paste the 2nd)

Don't worry about the comment, # Blah Blah Bloody Blah,

that's only necessary for other Python files you may have to Edit, the main one is keeping formations after a SVN update.

On Slavery, I use that civic all the time, its the best 1st Civic, that gets you out of the 33% research penalty, gives you 3 free hammers for new cities, and only costs 1/2 :mad:, not a huge penalty at all. True it gives non slaving civs a +1:).

The added production benefits of slave markets, that can add +5:hammers: VERY early on, is huge. I do move on to other civics later, mimicking history.

Even the most 'advanced' Civs of history have used Slavery, the Greeks, that idealistic culture of the ancient world, used slavery, when most other civs around them were still, considered barbaric.

Whipping, I've mentioned it before, but I'd only really use it on a newly concurred city, to use up that lost population. With Revolutions, and I love revolutions, (personal like), your newly concurred population should rebel and resist the oppressors and concorers.

I also play with Full elimination option checked, so if I don't fully eliminate every last unit, I'll have rebellion, where there's hope there's fire.

The problem may be in the rootdir line.
First of all,does the folder "My Games/Beyond the Sword" have to be in "My documents" ?This is by default.Also my Windows XP is a non-english version so it uses non-english characters for the "My Documents" folder.Although I renamed it with english letters, the problem persists. Should I move "My Games/Beyond the Sword" folder elsewhere?

When I played vanilla BtS Civ4 I used to use the whip all the time, it's a key part of that game, knowing when and how to use it effectively. When playing vs the AIs them not knowing how to whip effectively was an issue there as well and let even a halfway decent human player really tend to dominate if they had enough resources at hand.

When I moved over to playing AND I missed it terribly at first but over time I've gotten used to not being able to whip. There are so many more options, techs, units and general "things" to build and do in AND that you don't really need to use the whip anymore. As for the AND civic option of Slavery, I use it all the time as well. It quickly gets you out of those horrible early penalties for research and commerce and comes with some additional production bonuses as well for a minor happiness & health hit.

A good deal all around, so I'd leave it as is personally although I wouldn't be totally against bringing the whip back if the AI could be made to understand how and when to use it as they certainly didn't in vanilla BtS Civ4.

@ Nionios it say's it will have problems with non english letters

Windows XP: "C:/Documents and Settings/[UserName]/My Documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword"

is the standard input, what you've changed yours to ??? just input the full line as in C:/......./Beyond the Sword

As I said, mine uses a drive H as its a virtual drive, yours???

That's why I renamed the folder with english letters but it haven't solved the problem.I tried d:/My Documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword (d: is another partition) and there's no user interface.
Then I tried the installation folder "c:/program files/firaxis/.../beyond the sword and when i start a new game it just says “directory from CvAltRoot.py is not valid or does not contain CivilizationIV.ini” but the game seems ok and goes on normally as I' ve seen after several turns.
To conclude, the only thing that concerned me is the message about "cvaltroot.py" file.On the other hand everything seems normal as the game progresses so I don't want to annoy you anymore.Thank you for the replies.:)

Just to make sure, you are editing the pink text at the bottom, and not the comments where is gives examples of the input you may need.

I myself, did this incorrectly for a Number of months, then I suddenly realized, I needed to edit the pink text at the bottom, and not the example as I had.

I've a file of about 30 pages of printouts where I've tried editing the wrong line...

Obviously the pink line appears when you open the file with a specific program.I open it with notepad so there's no pink line.

Notepad++ would probably be better, since it color codes things and includes syntax formatting for easier navigation of Python and XML files :)

Political Philosophy is missing from the tech tree.

Its a researchable tech, and can be gained with tech diffusion, it lists the benefits, but its not located on the tech tree.

If others have it on there tech tree, I must have an error, but I can't find it.

Spoiler :

I see the problem. I've got Political Philosophy in the wrong column. It's supposed to be just to the right of Humanism, but it's to the left right now, so it's hidden under Anatomy. I'll fix it on the next upload.

Modifying iGrowthPercent values in the GameSpeedInfo / EraInfos XML files has no effect.

I tried deleting the cache, reloading Civ4 and starting entirely new games with iGrowthPercent at 400 percent and cities still grow a exactly the same rate.

Not sure what to do at this point.
