Anno Domini Classic: discussion thread part 3 (warning: lots of images on page one)

No offense taken guys, I completely agree. They do look a lot like legos. I will try to remedy this.
I'm glad you all otherwise like them, because (as varwnos suggested) these were extremely painstakingly hard to make! (No worries, though, I'm having fun doing them ;))
@Sword_Of_Geddon - You know well my signature style ;). Hopefully the finished product will look more like that and less two-bit.
To answer your question, there are some parts of the buildings you posted I will be able to cut and paste directly, but mostly (because of the odd angle) I won't be able to use them for that -- but I will be able to use them for inspiration, plus stealing those nice colours/textures off of them.

I was able to grab the more important buildings when I made the Khmer set, so I expect you'd be able to surpass me in doing so....:) With your skill, this is going to be an awesome set. You should even consider making a generic era-specific set!

Over in the Bazaar thread there's a new gallery of
BCE Cities, including a Vedic house. I think there are images that will further answer RedAlert's request for information on residences. Looks like they had Roman style condos. Hopefully there's also some inspiration for Era 3-4 cities.

And the City Gates gallery has two new images of (I believe) a torana from Barhut; it has a simpler style, with an interesting top crest; quite different from the Sanchi toranas.

Does this look better?

Again, I really like what you've done; I've seen the cities in-game (as I've imported those graphics into Anno Domini) and they do look good.

Came across these images of a traditional Rajasthani village that I thought might be of interest to RedAlert. Caution is called for; since the site is associated with a tourist safari, the village may be a little "Disneyfied".

RL has been getting in the way a bit of late; what I propose is to upload a demo version by around 6th June (I'll let you know around this time if I'm on target). This may or may not include Indian civs; it depends on what buildings/cities are created by around 1st June. If they're not done, then I'll post an update with the Indian civs in once the guys contributing to that side of things have had a chance to do the necessary art and I've had a chance to integrate them into the game. Thanks again for all the contributions so far.

What I thought I'd do (assuming the Indian civs are not ready at that point) is a straightforward "Anno Domini," which includes the following civs (to allow me to upload a smaller, but completed version): Anglo-Saxons, Carthage, Celtiberians, Dacia, Egypt, Florence, Greece, Huns, Iceni, Persia and Rome. Eleven civs, all with different gameplay. I'll borrow a couple of items from other civs in order to make this one quite unique.

Following this, there will be expansion packs to bring the other civs into play. What I'm thinking is that the first expansion pack will loose Greece as a single civ and split it into Athens, Macedonia and Sparta. The Indian civs would also be in this pack, bringing the totals up to sixteen. Obviously any gameplay flaws would be corrected, then I can look to increase the civs further with another pack after that.

I've decided to do it this way to keep a balance of "getting it right" and also getting the mod out so that you can all at last play it, albeit in a smaller form.

Firaxis have done a very naughty thing indeed; that's including Boudicca in the new XP along with new ways to win that aren't based on warfare; there's a possibility that once Civ III Anno Domini is completed (i.e. all civs in there) that I might move on to Civ IV and have a go at the mod there.

A couple quick questions.
What timeframe are thinking of using now?
And what's the current status of the "roman roads"? The screenie on the first page has them in, but I thought they'd been taken out.

Here's the complete second era. Hope you like them
(because I really don't want to spend another second on them )

@R8XFT - Great idea. I really like the civ lineup there, it's absolutely perfect, IMO.
The way things are going with the Indian cities (I'm only managing to get about one era done per week), I probably won't have them done by June 1. Btw, has anyone taken up the Indian unit requests yet?

@rifleman - I believe this era of Indian cities is pre-Gupta, though Blue Monkey would know for sure.

@RedAlert: I like the look of those cities a lot. Yes, they're pre-Gupta in style. The architectural style of the Indian cities isn't going to match the actual chronology in lock-step with the Europeans, since their aesthetic and physical culture flowered earlier. The period in architecture that is the closest equivalent to Baroque/Rococco happened in the 12th-13th CE, for example.

@R8XFT: I've been tinkering around with some Indian flavoured tech icons. I'm not sure yet what I want to post, and what to work on more. If there's anything in your tech tree you'd like to have with a South Asian look, let me know. Right now I've got lots of raw material and ideas, but no focus.

Timeframe: maybe about a couple of weeks to bring out the demo/start version. I don't know after that for sure, but probably another couple of weeks to get all the Indian stuff together (and the inevitable feedback ;) ) before uploading expansion one.

Roman roads: they're in. I'm looking forward to the opinions about that once the mod's out.

I don't just like them, I really like them ;) !! Thanks a lot and they look fabulous in-game :) .

 Ok I guess my question must have been really amiguous. I meant what timeframe does the mod have right now (i.e. 300 AD - 1400 AD) I didn't mean to get on your case about when the mod was actually going to come out. :whipped:

I had a feeling that might have been the case!! It runs from the dawn of time to just after the Americas were discovered by Europeans. There's no gunpowder units in it.

I've not yet put in the Indian part of the tech tree; I wanted to see what becomes available after a flurry of activity with buildings etc. What I will be requiring in terms of techs are techs which would need to be discovered in order to build the buildings you've suggested (if you see what I mean); also, something for elephant warfare.
In terms of the Nalanda University wonder that Ogedei made, could that be a late wonder that any Indian civs in the game could build (but only one in any one game) - or should it be unique to one Indian civ?
