Anonymous hacks Senate website

I would like to point out, or at least what it appears like from the article, is that the only reason the government even found out about it in the first place is because Lulzsec posted the documents online. Would the government have even known about it if it weren't for this?

Would the government acknowledge the fact they did not know?

Like most hacking memes, this one is also not true.
well, they can, to some extent. doesn't mean they can't be tracked down at all, but they can make it very hard. I'd think making Senate systems less vulnerable to such attacks would actually be easier than tracking these hackers down....

Sounds like you're being soft on cyberterrorism.

HOW MANY VANS MUST BE DESTROYED?

An attack upon the Senate is an attack upon the Republic. The people doing this need to be treated as either spies or illegal combatants, assuming they had no nation-state backing. They need to be found by our military or intelligence services and dealt with.

And no, I am not kidding. These people just attacked our country.

I do think you're rather overreacting...they broke into the public section only, hacking the senate's website...that's more like spraying some message on a government building than an attack on the republic (still illegal, of course, but certainly not to the extent of them being 'illegal combatants')

Sounds like you're being soft on cyberterrorism.

I obviously am :p

Yeah - hacking the website is a world apart from hacking a government database or accessing a government network.

I 'ed for a minute until I realized you were being serious and then I :('ed.

Me thinks you just have issues with computer nerds.

These guys should be found and punished. They're attacking America itself now.

No, I have issues with felons, spies, terrorists, etc.

Of which these guys are neither.

And since when do we use the military to go after felons? I don't see you demanding we use the military to go after rapists and murderers, but when it comes to computer hackers you're willing to get all gung-ho chuck norris ooo rah USA #1...just doesn't make sense now does it?

If "america" is defined as the Federal Government, they can "attack" (re: vandalize) it all they want.

Viewing it as an attack upon the republic, i.e. an act of war, opens up military options. Though it would make more sense to find and arrest them and charge them with something like espionage or something. Treat them like spies.... cyberspies.

So I'm free to go spray paint the Library of Congress?

I ain't the authorities, why you ask? Go do it yourself if you're so eager. Me personally, I could care less.:p

Never mind that your comparison is ridiculous, to say the least. Do you really think redistributing info over the internet is equivalent to "spray painting"?:crazyeye:

I wonder how that will work with the war declaration, and if that is the case for the NATO, triggering the defensive pact...

If so, I think the UK should give the US as much military support as they did us when the Argentine invasion of our Falklands triggered the NATO defensive pact.

Vandalizing a government website might as well be the same as vandalizing a government building in this day and age.

So I'm free to go spray paint the Library of Congress?
Sure, you are free to spray paint it. You just aren't free after you spray paint the Library of Congress.:p

How is it an act of war? Who has died as a result of these actions? What belligerent nation state is declaring war on the united states?

And if they are spies, who are they spying for?

Espionage doesn't make sense in this case, really. If they were really spying, why would they do this for all the internet to see?

I still think that you are for whatever reason just buggered that there are computer hackers out there who are smarter than our government.
