Anti Nemo Graphics Association

With the "nemo-esque" units however they are very clear and geraraly look spiffing in my opinion.

:D

That is the most rediculous thing to say - it is Nemoesque graphics which look like each other, making it had to tell one from another.

Instead of hanging anybody out I think ANGA should be renamed Anti-Toonish-Graphics-Association instead. Would be more right.

I also think that hi-res units look better. Getting as close to reality as possible in graphics creation much be a common goal for all. A perfect example is Mortens units, but I know from my visits to him that it also takes a lot of time and care. Most people just don't take the time to make the last finishing touches erasing the feel of blur from the pics. But as Morten shows it's worth it.

When we download a scenario I guess most of us are judging it by the first time look of the graphics before we play it. And honestly: if I see a scenario with those not-so-good-looking toonish pics I simply delete it again. :(

Or maybe all of us don't have the skills to create so good graphics.:)

Well actually neither have I, but it doesn't matter that much. Just get your grasp on Paint Shop Pro if you don't have it and have a start. Search the net for pictures you like to be your units. Then "clear" the picture of anything but the unit you want to have (ie. remove anything outside the perimeter of the units borders: Use flood fill were you adjust the tolerance together with pinpoint pixel removal) and then scale it down to a size so it can fit into the units.gif. After that have a look at it and then zoom in on where you want to apply some fixes. And then it's done! Should on an average take about half an hour depending on how much care you want to lay into it and the quality of the picture. :)

Its not as easy as it sounds of course.

You need to adjust the contrast, brightness and apply colour filters to get the right image before down-scaling and filling in the background. Many times you have to change the perspective or do some sheering/distorting to get the right view of the object. The choice of colour for the background is important too as it will 'bleed' into the unit border after shrinking.

After shrinking, applying a 'sharpen' option will often help as well. Usually there is some manual editing to add or alter features.

worse of all, the result may not be usable and you have to start all over again looking for a better 'source' picture.

I just noticed that my name is misspelled...it's Eivind, not Elvind (you are not the first one in the forum to do that ;) )

yep. seems some of the Apolytonites have gone overboard in attacking the people who make Hi-Res graphics instead of discussing the merits of their school of art. Anyway, S-League has always been an old boys club .......

To all ANGA members: in the interest of balance please pay a visit to Apolyton and participate in the cartoon versus blob (Nemo vs Hi-Res) poll

get real.

the so called 'poll' has these choices -

1. Nemo units. He was a Civ God.
2. Hi-res graphics - indistinguishable blobs of pixels

how would you like it if i started a poll with options like ?

1. Hi-res graphics - units for those of us who have grown up
2. sh!t graphics of the Nemo type
(only for illustrative purposes, I wouldn't actually do a poll like that)

hey all, i hate being a mean mod like some of the others, but could you all make a single thread debating Nemo graphics vs. Hi-resolution graphics.
Thank ya :)

Couldn't agree more. Since this thread was started first, is bigger and has more views, you should close the other thread.

Whoa there Kobayashi - let's not get out of hand here. I'm afraid my peurile sense of humour went a bit overboard when naming the poll choices, but I guess I was just trying to provoke a response to what is generally an interesting debate. I'm sorry if it caused offense. If you read my last comment in the Apolyton thread you'll see that I really don't hate graphics such as those you've posted here - in fact I like them and hope that everyone who makes graphics in this way will follow your example and advice. I'll even admit that a backlash to all the WW2 scenarios with Nemo units was inevitable.

Surely there is room for more than one style of graphic presentation when it comes to tanks and planes, so long as a bit of thought goes into them - my only thought would be to stick to that one style rather than swapping and changing between isometric and 'photo-realistic'.

PS you were kind of provocative yourself by starting the specifically-named 'Anti-Nemo Graphics Association' rather than, say, Pro-Hi-res graphics or some such, and furthermore by denigrating the efforts of people who make isometric units by calling them cartoonish

But, let's live and let live on this debate
