Welcome to Sons of Monarchy: Round 12: The Apocalypse

Our 12th round will feature Pacal of Maya
civ4screenshot0010b.jpg

Pacal is:
Financial +1 :commerce: on tiles with 2 or more :commerce:
Expansive: +2 :health: per city, Double Production of Granary and Harbor, and 25% faster production of workers

Two very good traits. Pacal is a pretty capable leader.

Maya's Starting Techs & Uniques:
Mysticism & Mining
Ball Court: A colosseum that gives 3 :) in addition to the 1:) per 20% culture rate
Holkan: A Spearman who is immune to first strikes but also (more importantly) doesn't require metal to build.

Ball court is a very good UB. Holkan is limited by the fact that it's a spearman, but resourceless defenders are nothing to shrug away either.

The Start:

No Huts, No Events, All Other Settings Standard
Spoiler Map Type, no other spoilers :
Pangaea

To play: I am using the same process as the Noble's Club so those familiar with that excellent series just do the same thing. Download the attached zip files & unzip into your BTS/Saves/Worldbuilder folder. Go to Custom Scenarios, select the SoM Save corresponding to your desired difficulty level, and customize game settings as desired. You will need to add techs to barbs. To do so:
Spoiler :
zoom all the way in, open worldbuilder, and add the appropriate techs to the barbarian civilization. This means archery at monarch or higher, hunting at emperor or higher, agriculture at immortal or deity, and the wheel at deity.

Posters are encouraged to include: Thoughts on start/where to settle first and what initial tech path. Later saves can include position at 1 AD, liberalism race as a midgame checkpoint, and the final result. Players are encouraged to post as much as they desire, though screenshots/saves make receiving help easier. Spoiler details about the map and your playing for all details except regarding the opening screenshot.

Good luck, and happy civving!

I debated going all out apocalypse on this one, doing something crazy like using the fantasy realm map script (or whatever the one that gives stuff like bananas on ice or pigs on tundra is called), ensuring the use of nukes somehow, or having the AI's being Pacal with random personalities. But I decided to try to keep things in the realm of moderate sanity since this is a learning series, not a role play series. I'm interested to see what happens with this map.

WOW!!AWESOME!!FANTASTIC!! I've been asking noble club junkies to have a Pacal game but then Oz told me about this! Thanks man!

I think i'll give this one a whirl!
moving the settler 1S looks good to me unless i see some food

I'm happy!! However look at my new signature!

I moved the warrior 1SE. There's food somewhere in that BFC by virtue of the game's coding, so it's a matter of finding it.

Spoiler :
Rough neighborhood. I made a strategic misstep and made a late push for the Oracle (which I lost); I should've gone straight for Currency after getting a fairly early Construction. So I'm going to go back to an earlier auto-save.

The war with Shaka is going well, though!

Spoiler :
settled 1S. Worker first in the capital. went Agriculture, AH, hunting(for Ivory), Wheel. revealed horse outside of BFC with animal hub. Met Genghis Kahn close by to the east:mad: as well as Napoleon Dynamite  to the north. thoughts on an early horse archer rush on the Kahn ?:deadhorse: Also marble to the south tempts me to go for Oracle

What does everyone think of the Holkan? A fairly decent unit to rush with (at lower levels) if you can avoid metals?

im going to play with this with special rules for myself. One of them involving creating an apocalypse exactly on turn of 2012, but my idea was to use ICBM to kill everything i can possibly kill on that turn and i cant nuke myself nor allies.... making my apocalypse not so much an apocalypse really. Is there a way to edit that in the xml or any other possible way?

Ah, Pacal! My favorite leader. This is one of the best leaders for abusing Hereditary Rule over Mids/Rep if land permits. Just build lots of warriors and grow cities tall as possible.

D0W your friends, too. :D

Way to go, a hint from Mr.L. ;)

Hey this is indeed Apocalyptic...to give you a non-spoilerish clue:

Spoiler :
I founded Hinduism without even trying on the way to Priesthood for Oracle. THAT was after AG>BW>Hunting>TW and POT....lol. And I Oracled Feud. Should kinda give you a clue as to what merry band of misfits we are up against in this game:lol: Edit: IMM
